Short answer: YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls do not restart a crashed encoder. OBS can reconnect its output after some connection interruptions, and it can loop a prerecorded file, but neither feature relaunches OBS if the application itself closes. First identify what failed; then configure the matching recovery path and test it before relying on it.
First identify what stopped
“The stream stopped” can describe three different failures. Check whether OBS is still open before changing settings:
- The video reached its end: OBS may still be running, but the media source has finished playback.
- The connection dropped: OBS remains open but its output to YouTube was interrupted.
- OBS crashed or closed: The encoder application is no longer running. Playback and output settings inside OBS cannot restart a process that has stopped.
These cases need different fixes. A loop handles playback reaching the end; automatic reconnect handles certain output interruptions; restarting the application requires a separate process-recovery mechanism.
Make a prerecorded video repeat in OBS
To repeat a file that is already playing in OBS, configure its Media Source. OBS documents these options for media playback; they do not recover a crashed OBS application. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video and click its Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source properties. If the video is not already a Media Source, add one and choose the prerecorded file.
- Enable Loop to play the file again after playback completes.
- Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if the file should start from the beginning when the source becomes visible in the scene.
- Apply the settings and watch through a full playback cycle to confirm the file repeats as intended.
Loop and restart-on-activation solve different playback situations. Loop acts when the file reaches its end; restart-on-activation acts when the source becomes active in the scene. Neither option restarts OBS or reconnects a stream that has stopped.
Reconnect OBS after a stream connection drops
If OBS remains open and only its connection to YouTube has failed, configure OBS’s output reconnection option. OBS documents automatic reconnect and retry controls in its Overview Guide and output reference.
- In OBS, open Settings and find the stream or output settings for your version of OBS.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose a retry delay and maximum number of retries appropriate to your connection and event. There is no universal setting that guarantees recovery in every outage.
- Apply the settings, then test a controlled interruption while monitoring both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room.
Automatic reconnect is a connection feature, not a watchdog for the OBS process. OBS’s documentation describes reconnection capability; it does not promise a successful reconnect for every YouTube event state or service interruption. If OBS has closed, this setting is no longer running.

What YouTube auto-start and auto-stop actually do
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls let you start or stop a broadcast from the encoder. YouTube’s guidance says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” It does not describe a YouTube-side watchdog that relaunches an encoder after the encoder application crashes. See Manage live stream settings.
So enabling auto-start is not a substitute for restarting OBS. It governs how YouTube responds to encoder start and stop actions; it does not make the computer reopen a crashed encoder.
If OBS itself crashes
OBS’s media loop and automatic output reconnect cannot restart a stopped OBS process. A separate operating-system task or process supervisor may be able to relaunch an application, but relaunching OBS does not by itself establish that the scheduled YouTube broadcast will resume correctly. The behavior can depend on the event state, encoder configuration, and stream key, so do not treat an untested restart script as guaranteed recovery.

If you choose process supervision, validate the complete chain on a test broadcast: OBS launches, loads the intended scene and media, connects using the correct stream details, and the YouTube player resumes as expected. Keep a person able to monitor the test; a successful application launch alone is not proof that viewers can see a live stream.
Use a backup encoder for higher availability
A separately configured backup encoder is a distinct failover strategy: it may help when the primary encoder fails, but it requires a second encoder setup and a deliberate test. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup. See YouTube live streaming tips.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Configure the primary and backup encoders for the same live event using YouTube’s supported setup.
- Before the real broadcast, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable.
- Watch the YouTube player and confirm that it moves to the backup encoder.
- Restore the primary connection and confirm the intended operating state before the event.
Do not assume redundancy works because a backup encoder is configured. The controlled rollover test is the useful check. For encoder setup and startup troubleshooting, see YouTube’s guides to creating a live stream with an encoder and troubleshooting a YouTube live stream.

Check the stream key and connection if the encoder will not start
If OBS is running but cannot connect, check the stream details in YouTube Live Control Room and in the encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets the encoder send its feed. Copy the correct key into OBS and check the stream URL or service configuration as well. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or logs, and replace it if it has been exposed.
YouTube’s encoder instructions cover connecting, previewing, going live, and ending a stream. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts for the event rather than assuming an old key or event configuration is still correct.
Transmission settings help delivery, not crash recovery
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion and publishes bitrate guidance by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Using an appropriate protocol and encoder setting can support transmission, but it does not restart a crashed application. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and its RTMPS encryption guidance when configuring the encoder.
