First check whether FFmpeg is still producing video after the first file ends. A missing or misapplied loop setting is one possibility, but a black screen alone does not identify the cause. Check the input sequence and stream mapping, then compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube’s stream status and health messages before changing ingest settings.
Identify where the video stops
Separate the problem into four states. Watch FFmpeg through the transition, note whether audio continues, and compare its output with what YouTube reports. The viewer-facing black screen by itself does not prove that YouTube ingest has failed.

Audio continuing while video disappears is a useful clue: it suggests a video-stream or transition issue rather than a total process or ingest stoppage, though it does not establish the cause.
Check the FFmpeg input and loop settings
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option. Its value 0 means no looping; -1 means infinite looping. Verify that the option applies to the intended input. For a single source meant to repeat indefinitely, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1; that is not a universal prescription for multi-file playlists. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Looping and real-time pacing do different jobs. FFmpeg defines -re as reading at native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. It does not repeat an input that has ended. For prerecorded material sent as a live feed, determine separately whether the input should loop and whether it should be read in real time.
Inspect the transition between files
- Confirm the playlist includes the intended next file and that its path, filename, and quoting are correct.
- Check that the next file exists and can be read by the installed FFmpeg build.
- Look at the log around the transition for input, decoding, or output errors.
- Confirm each source has video and that the output’s selected streams include video after the transition.
Do not assume stream copy or a particular concat method is suitable without checking the sources. The right repair depends on the command and whether the files have compatible streams.

Check YouTube ingest and stream health
If FFmpeg continues to produce valid video locally, verify the configured YouTube ingest address and stream name. YouTube’s LiveStreams API identifies the encoder’s ingestion URL and stream name and distinguishes active, error, and inactive states. Use those states and the associated health information as evidence; a black screen alone is not an ingest diagnosis. See the YouTube LiveStreams API documentation.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. Do not change protocols just because the screen is black. HLS has its own requirements—such as a media playlist, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and a single encoded stream—and those requirements apply only if your ingest method is HLS. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide only when HLS is in use.

Test before relying on the rerun
Run a test that covers the first-file transition and includes representative movement and audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health and review any messages during the test. Collect the details needed for a precise fix
If the checks do not isolate the fault, save the exact FFmpeg command, version/build output, playlist, and a log covering the transition. Record whether FFmpeg exits, whether audio continues, whether local output still has video, and what YouTube reports for stream status and health. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing any command or log. Without those details, the symptom cannot establish whether the cause is exhausted input, a playlist or transition problem, stream selection, or ingest.
