To show a prerecorded playlist as a YouTube Live event, run an encoder that plays the videos in order and sends a continuous feed to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Google Cloud can host that encoder, but uploading videos to Cloud Storage alone does not start a YouTube broadcast. If you want viewers to choose videos on demand in your own app or site, use Google Cloud’s separate video-on-demand pipeline instead.
Choose the right workflow: YouTube Live or on-demand video
| What viewers do | Input and destination | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Watch a scheduled live event on YouTube | An encoder sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live | Use an encoder to play the prerecorded playlist and send it to the event’s stream URL and key. |
| Select and play a video from your service | Stored source files are processed for a compatible player | Store source video in Cloud Storage, transcode it with Transcoder API to HLS or MPEG-DASH, and serve the output. Media CDN is an option for delivery. |
Google’s video-on-demand overview describes the Cloud Storage and Transcoder API workflow. It is not a way to turn a Cloud Storage playlist into a YouTube Live event.
What you need for a prerecorded YouTube Live event
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- The prerecorded video files and an encoder capable of playing them in the intended order while sending a continuous output.
- A Google Cloud environment if you want the encoder to run there. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not prescribe a particular Google Cloud deployment, playlist scheduler, or command line.
- A reliable network path from the encoder to YouTube. Use an output configuration compatible with the source video and the available upload capacity.
You do not need to buy a hardware encoder for the workflow described here: it can use encoder software and cloud services. The right cloud setup depends on the encoder you choose and how you want to operate it.
Set up and start the YouTube Live stream
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live stream, or schedule one if you want a watch page available in advance. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the ingest details. In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL: YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and explains how to reveal and copy the details in its RTMPS instructions. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Configure the encoder output. Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s output settings. Configure the encoder to play the playlist in the intended order and keep sending a continuous feed. Playlist setup is encoder-specific; YouTube’s instructions do not define a Google Cloud playlist scheduler.
- Match YouTube’s encoding guidance. YouTube’s current encoder settings guide lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than relying on a universal figure. Match output settings to the source where practical and to the encoder’s reliable upload capacity.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder early enough for Live Control Room to receive its feed. Verify picture, audio, playback order, and stream health. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and then select Go live when ready.
- End the event cleanly. Stop the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that applies to longer streams.
Run the encoder in Google Cloud
Google Cloud can host the machine or service running your encoder, but the YouTube setup remains the same: the encoder must send the event’s stream URL and key. Choose an encoder and deployment that can continuously read the files, play them in sequence, and maintain a stable connection. The cited YouTube documentation does not supply a verified Google Cloud deployment recipe, so exact machine types, installation commands, and playlist configuration depend on your chosen software and deployment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the stream key in a protected configuration or secret store rather than embedding it in public scripts, source repositories, or logs. Before relying on the setup for a long event, run a representative test with the same playlist, output settings, and cloud environment; monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the event behaves as intended.
When Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is relevant
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview describes live SRT or RTMP inputs and HLS or DASH outputs, with output stored in Cloud Storage. It is a live-stream processing service, not the documented file-based VOD transcoder. For stored source files that need transcoding for on-demand playback, Google’s VOD material points to Transcoder API.

Build a separate on-demand video service
- Store source video. Put the prerecorded files in Cloud Storage.
- Transcode for playback. Use Transcoder API to create HLS or MPEG-DASH output, which is also stored in Cloud Storage.
- Deliver to your player. Use a compatible player in your application or site. For media delivery, Media CDN can serve content from publicly accessible HTTP origins such as Cloud Storage.
Google’s media workload guidance recommends that customer traffic reads go through a CDN. It also says to consider where users are concentrated when choosing a VOD source region; for livestream workloads, buckets may be colocated with transcoding resources. This architecture serves on-demand playback in your own service, not a scheduled YouTube Live watch page.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Confirm the encoder is running and configured with the stream URL and key for the correct event.
- Check for a typo, stale event details, or a key copied from a different stream. Keep the key private while correcting the configuration.
- Verify the encoder can reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint and that the selected RTMPS destination is being used as intended.
The preview appears, but the event is not live
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and select Go live when ready. Check the event state in Live Control Room rather than assuming that an incoming encoder feed automatically starts the public event.

Video or audio is missing, unstable, or out of sync
- Check the encoder’s selected audio and video sources, output codecs, and whether the file itself plays correctly.
- Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current codec, bitrate, frame-rate, and keyframe guidance. A bitrate that exceeds reliable available upload capacity can undermine a stable feed.
- Run a representative test and watch stream health before the intended broadcast.
The playlist stops or plays in the wrong order
Check the encoder’s own playlist configuration and verify that every file can be read by the cloud workload. YouTube receives the encoder output; it does not manage the prerecorded file sequence.
The broadcast ends unexpectedly
Check whether the encoder process stopped, lost access to its media, or lost its network path. Review the event and encoder status, then restore the feed and follow Live Control Room’s current recovery prompts. Do not assume a stored Cloud Storage playlist will resume a YouTube event by itself.
