OBS hotkeys let you control a YouTube playlist broadcast—such as starting or stopping the stream, switching scenes, or showing and hiding sources—from the keyboard. They do not make OBS a 24/7 uptime monitor: an unattended stream still depends on the computer, power, network, media playback, and YouTube connection. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, configure its loop and visibility behavior, assign the hotkeys you need, and rehearse the whole setup before leaving it unattended.
Choose the right source for your playlist
OBS has two useful options, depending on whether you want to repeat one clip or play several files. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes both.

Set what happens when the source is hidden
A playlist source can behave differently when a scene change makes it invisible. VLC Video’s visibility options let playback stop when hidden and restart when visible, pause and resume, or continue playing while hidden. Choose the behavior that matches your scene layout: if the playlist should continue through scene changes, do not assume it will keep playing in the background—set and test that option explicitly. Assign hotkeys for the actions you actually need
In OBS, open Settings → Hotkeys, find the action, click its shortcut field, and press the key or combination you want. OBS documents configurable hotkeys for starting and stopping streaming or recording, showing and hiding sources, switching to scenes, push-to-talk or push-to-mute, and replay-buffer controls in its Overview Guide. The exact media controls and labels available can vary by OBS version and source type, so check the Hotkeys panel in your installed build.

- Choose distinct combinations for high-impact actions such as stopping the stream and changing scenes. Avoid shortcuts likely to be pressed accidentally.
- Assign source visibility controls only if you need to reveal or hide that playlist source during the broadcast.
- Look for playlist navigation actions if you need them. OBS’s VLC Video source implementation registers a playlist-next hotkey, but do not assume every version or source exposes the same controls; inspect the panel.
- Check for conflicts and test each binding during a private or otherwise safe rehearsal.
Do not treat editing shortcuts as universal media controls. OBS’s Keyboard Shortcuts page covers editing and preview operations; those are distinct from the configurable actions in Settings → Hotkeys.
Optional: control OBS remotely
Keyboard hotkeys are enough for basic control. If you need an external device or tool to control OBS, OBS WebSocket is included by default with OBS Studio 28 and later, as stated in the OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide (published 2023-04-18). The guide lists clients including Macro Deck, Touch Portal, Streamer.bot, and Bitfocus Companion. Enable authentication and set a password; do not expose an unauthenticated control endpoint.

Rehearse before leaving the stream unattended
OBS recommends testing settings, scenes, and stream smoothness before the first live broadcast in its Overview Guide. Run a rehearsal that checks the full playback and control path:
- Open the intended scene and confirm the correct playlist source is present.
- Confirm the files play in the expected order, loop or shuffle as intended, and produce audio.
- Change scenes and verify the playlist’s hidden-source behavior matches your choice.
- Press every assigned hotkey and confirm it performs the intended action, including stream start or stop if you assigned those controls.
- Watch the stream preview and confirm it remains smooth during playback and transitions.
Hotkeys are operator controls, not a watchdog or recovery guarantee. An OBS broadcast left running still depends on the host computer staying on, its power and network, the local media and playback source, and the streaming platform. The cited OBS guidance does not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime or YouTube archive availability. For current platform-specific rules about continuous stream duration, archiving, or retention, consult YouTube’s applicable Help information rather than assuming a limit or policy.
