To loop local videos on a YouTube Live stream from a Windows laptop, install OBS Studio and VLC, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, then connect OBS to a broadcast in YouTube Studio. OBS handles playback and streaming; the laptop and its internet connection must stay on for the broadcast.
What you need
- A Windows laptop that can encode your chosen video settings while playing the playlist.
- OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC too. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Local video and audio files you have the rights to broadcast.
- A YouTube channel eligible to create the live broadcast, plus a reliable upload connection.
The documented OBS and YouTube setup does not require an India-specific setting. Actual connection performance can vary by ISP and location, so test from the laptop and network you plan to use.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Open OBS after installation.
- Select or create a scene. The scene you stream must contain the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add your local files. In the VLC Video source properties, add the video and audio files in the order you want them to play. Check that the files are accessible on the laptop.
- Set playlist behavior. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the playlist. It is on by default in OBS. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want the same fixed order each time.
- Check the active scene and audio. Make sure the source is visible in the scene selected for streaming and that the intended audio track is active. OBS’s documented visibility behavior stops playback when a source is not visible and restarts it when visible; do not hide the source if playback must continue.
- Preview playback. Confirm that the video appears, audio is audible, and the playlist advances and loops as expected before connecting to YouTube.
This method loops media files stored locally; it does not establish that a YouTube-hosted playlist URL can be loaded as a direct OBS playlist source. Playlist looping and live streaming are separate: OBS plays the files in the scene, then encodes and sends that scene to YouTube.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then create a broadcast or select an existing one. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating or selecting a stream and connecting an encoder.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, or enter the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube Studio if configuring the connection manually.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not show it on screen or publish it.
- If the broadcast is scheduled, start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then select Go live there when prompted. Sending data from OBS does not necessarily make a scheduled broadcast public by itself.
Choose output settings for your laptop and connection
There is no single safe resolution or bitrate for every Windows laptop or Indian internet connection. Encoding capacity depends on the laptop; upload stability depends on the connection. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate and selecting quality that remains reliable. The figures below are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of a particular laptop or connection.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations also specify CBR bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. See its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Use the recommendation matching your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating a bitrate as a guarantee of stable streaming.
- Run an upload speed test on the laptop’s actual connection. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- In OBS output settings, select an encoder and quality the laptop can sustain. If the preview or stream health shows dropped frames or instability, reduce the output demands and test again.
- Test audio and representative motion—not just a static opening frame—before going live. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages once sending data.
- Use RTMPS if offered in the connection settings; YouTube recommends it in its encoder guidance.
Go live, monitor, and end the broadcast
- For an immediate broadcast, follow YouTube Studio’s prompts after OBS begins sending. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and explicitly select Go live when Live Control Room requests it.
- Keep OBS running with the playlist source visible. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and check that video and audio continue as expected.
- When finished, stop streaming in OBS, then end the broadcast in Studio as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams.
Copyright and documentary footage
Only stream material for which you have the rights needed for a live broadcast, including music and any third-party footage. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A licence alone may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is unavailable or the playlist will not load: Install VLC; match its architecture to OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS and check the source’s file list.
- The playlist plays once and stops: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- The order changes between plays: Turn off Shuffle Playlist.
- Playback stops when changing scenes: Check whether the source is visible in the active scene. OBS’s documented default behavior stops playback when hidden and restarts it when visible.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm OBS is sending to the selected YouTube service or the correct server URL and stream key. Check YouTube Studio’s current status and prompts; keep the key private.
- A scheduled stream is not public: After OBS sends data, check for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live if prompted.
- Stream health is poor or frames drop: Test upload speed, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the laptop and connection can sustain, then test again.
- The stream is interrupted over content: Review the rights for every video and audio file. If third-party material is licensed, confirm the channel is allowlisted by the rights holder where required.
