Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can stream a repeating video to YouTube Live from a Linux mini PC by looping the file in OBS Studio or FFmpeg and sending the encoder output to YouTube’s ingest server. “Headless” needs a qualification: OBS documents a --startstreaming launch option, but that alone does not establish a fully headless OBS setup or guarantee unattended recovery. For a command-line workflow, FFmpeg can loop an input indefinitely with -stream_loop -1. In either case, configure the channel and encoder, then run a private or unlisted end-to-end test before relying on the stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A video or audio file you have the rights to broadcast, including permission for continuous looping and any monetization you plan to enable.
- A Linux mini PC with a supported graphics stack if you plan to use OBS. OBS’s Linux installation guidance requires OpenGL 3.3 or later: OBS Studio on Linux.
- A stable wired or wireless network with enough sustained upload capacity for the video bitrate, plus room for network variation.
- A way to administer the machine after setup. Remote administration does not necessarily mean the encoder itself can run without a graphical session.
No particular mini PC model, CPU, RAM amount, thermal capacity, or hardware encoder performance is established by the cited documentation. Check your chosen distribution, drivers, OBS or FFmpeg build, and hardware encoder availability on the actual computer.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, set its title and visibility, and select the event settings you need.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder workflow. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in logs or a public script.
- Keep the key out of shell history and process listings where practical if using FFmpeg. If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it from Live Control Room.
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a feed to its stream URL using the key; the repeating program comes from your encoder, not from a YouTube playlist setting. The key and server details are described in YouTube’s streaming setup instructions.
Choose OBS or FFmpeg
| Option | Good fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Graphical scene setup, media source looping, overlays, and multiple scenes. | OBS documents Linux support and a startup flag, but the documentation cited here does not give a complete fully headless deployment recipe or guarantee restart and reconnect behavior. |
| FFmpeg | A command-line workflow for a fixed file and a more minimal encoder setup. | The correct command depends on the media’s codecs, whether it has audio, the target bitrate, and the FFmpeg build and hardware. No universal YouTube-ready command is established here. |
Set up a looping stream in OBS
- Install OBS using the official Linux installation guidance. Confirm the selected Linux system and graphics drivers meet the OpenGL 3.3-or-later requirement.
- Open OBS, create a scene, and add a Media Source. Select the local file. OBS’s Media Source supports common video and audio formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; consult the OBS Media Sources documentation for the available controls.
- Enable Loop for the source. Decide whether to enable Show nothing when playback ends and restart behavior based on the scene you have built. Preview the scene and check that the picture and audio behave as intended.
- In OBS settings, configure the stream service using the YouTube server URL and key. Choose RTMPS if the encoder offers it; YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder streaming. Use a codec actually available in your installed OBS build and supported by your hardware.
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s guidance below. Start conservatively if you are unsure what the mini PC can sustain.
- OBS supports launch parameters including
--startstreaming,--profile,--collection, and--scene. These can help automate startup after you have configured and saved the relevant profile and scene. They do not, by themselves, prove OBS will run without a display server or graphical session, nor do they guarantee automatic recovery after a crash or network interruption.
Set up a command-line loop with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for looping an input indefinitely. The option is a building block, not a complete universal YouTube command: the right output settings depend on the file’s codecs, its time base, audio presence, chosen bitrate, available hardware encoding, and the RTMPS configuration supported by your FFmpeg build.

- Inspect the source file and confirm whether it contains the audio track you intend to send. If the file has no audio, decide how the stream should handle audio rather than assuming the encoder will supply it.
- Choose whether to pass compatible media through or re-encode it. Stream-copying only works when the source streams and timing are suitable for the target. Re-encoding requires enough sustained CPU or hardware-encoder capacity for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Apply
-stream_loop -1to the input so FFmpeg repeats it. Build the output options around YouTube’s ingest recommendations and the capabilities of your build; consult FFmpeg’s command-line documentation. - Send the output to the YouTube server URL using the stream key. Keep credentials out of public scripts and logs, and avoid exposing them in shell history or process listings when practical.
- Test the exact command with the exact file and target computer before making it unattended. Confirm playback passes the file boundary and that the stream remains healthy.
Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingest, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, and allows up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the settings supported by the selected encoder and confirmed on your Linux machine; the published figures describe YouTube ingest guidance, not a guarantee that a mini PC can encode at that rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
| Example H.264 video mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are the H.264 values in YouTube’s encoder-settings table, accessed October 3, 2026. The table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the row for your intended mode rather than treating either example as universal. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for primary and backup streams where applicable. A connection that barely meets the video bitrate may not remain stable: YouTube’s streaming tips.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For ordinary encoder streaming, prefer RTMPS where available. HLS is not simply a better way to loop a file: YouTube’s HLS workflow requires HTTPS, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, and POST/PUT requests. HLS also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Choose it only when the supported codec or workflow calls for it; see YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits the channel and event. Open the Live Control Room preview and verify that the feed arrives.
- Test representative movement and audio, not only a static opening frame. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health.
- Let the source play through a complete loop. Confirm that video and audio resume correctly at the file boundary, with no unwanted blank scene, silence, or visible interruption.
- Watch the Live Control Room health indicators and confirm the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate remain stable over time.
- Test the failure cases that matter for your use: power loss, network interruption, encoder restart, and whether the broadcast must be manually resumed. The documentation cited here does not promise automatic reconnection or indefinite event duration.
What “headless” does—and does not—mean here
A mini PC can be administered remotely while the encoder runs, but remotely starting a graphical application over SSH is not the same as a fully headless service. OBS’s documented --startstreaming option supports an automation path after configuration; the available official materials do not establish that every Linux installation can run OBS without a display server, or that a particular virtual display, dummy plug, compositor, or system service is always required or sufficient.

If you need a truly command-line-oriented workflow, FFmpeg’s input-loop option is available, but you still need to validate the exact build, file, output settings, and recovery procedure on the target system. Neither path should be treated as unattended until it has passed a full trial.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the incoming feed | Channel eligibility, stream URL, stream key, and whether the event is set up in Live Control Room. | Verify the channel requirements, copy the current server URL and key again, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| OBS fails to launch or the preview is blank on Linux | Distribution, graphics driver, OpenGL support, and whether the session provides the display environment the selected OBS build needs. | Check the OBS Linux installation requirements and test locally before automating startup. Do not assume a launch flag makes a graphical application fully headless. |
| The stream stutters or drops frames | Sustained upload capacity, the 20% headroom recommendation, bitrate, encoder load, and whether primary and backup streams share the connection. | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a mode supported by the encoder and connection; retest with representative motion and monitor stream health. |
| The video stops at the end of the file | Whether looping is enabled on the OBS Media Source or whether FFmpeg was configured with -stream_loop -1. |
Enable the source’s Loop control or correct the FFmpeg input-loop configuration, then test across a full file boundary. |
| There is no sound, or audio is unexpectedly loud | Whether the file has an audio track, whether the source is muted, and the OBS mixer level. | Inspect the media, check the source and mixer, and test the audio output before going live. |
| The stream stops after a restart or network interruption | How the selected encoder behaves on the actual Linux system and whether YouTube requires the event to be resumed. | Test restart and network recovery explicitly, and arrange monitoring or a manual recovery path if continuity is essential. Automatic recovery is not established by the cited OBS and FFmpeg documentation. |
Copyright, reused content, and continuous broadcasts
Having a file available does not automatically give you the right to stream it continuously. Confirm the license covers live streaming, repeated playback, your territory, monetization, and any attribution requirements. The cited technical documentation does not establish that any particular stock library grants those rights.

YouTube eligibility and copyright compliance are separate concerns. A technically valid loop can still raise rights or monetization issues if it uses material you do not control or does not meet the platform’s applicable policies. Review the channel’s current requirements and the specific rights attached to every video and audio asset before scheduling a long-running stream.
