How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Going Out of Sync Over Time

Compare a local recording with YouTube playback to find where sync drift begins. Then distinguish progressive clock mismatch from a fixed offset and test the right fix.

First compare a local recording with YouTube playback, then check whether the audio/video offset stays roughly constant or grows. A growing mismatch points toward ongoing timestamp or clock disagreement; a fixed delay calls for a different adjustment. Don’t apply a constant offset to a problem that keeps changing: it may briefly help, but the stream will drift again.

Find where the sync problem begins

Capture or inspect a local output from the same setup that produced the stream. Compare audio and video near the beginning and again later. FFmpeg’s ffplay -stats displays playback statistics, including audio/video synchronization drift:

ffplay -stats path/to/local-recording

  • The local recording gradually drifts: investigate source timing, timestamps, and audio resampling.
  • The local recording stays synchronized, but YouTube playback drifts: examine encoder output, YouTube ingest health, the archive, and the outbound connection before changing audio timestamps.
  • The offset is already present and remains about the same: measure the start-time mismatch; this is not the same as progressive drift.

This comparison narrows the problem but cannot identify a specific root cause without the FFmpeg command, input devices, and recording. The split between local and YouTube-only symptoms is a practical diagnostic inference from YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).

Correct audio against timestamps when they are reliable

FFmpeg’s aresample filter can fill or trim audio samples and stretch or squeeze audio to track timestamps. Compensation is disabled by default. It helps only if the timestamps provide a meaningful reference; it cannot make unrelated or unreliable device clocks agree.

As a diagnostic trial, add this audio filter to the output options:

-af "aresample=async=1:first_pts=0"

With the swr resampler, async=1 enables filling and trimming; larger values set a maximum amount of sample stretching or squeezing per second. The default is zero, meaning no compensation. first_pts=0 assumes the first audio presentation timestamp should be zero, so it may insert initial silence or trim samples with negative timestamps. Check the beginning and a later point in a local recording. If the start sounds wrong or artifacts appear, remove the option or tune it to the timestamps and source. See the FFmpeg resampler documentation.

Use timestamp offsets only for a measured fixed mismatch

If one input starts a known amount too early or late, FFmpeg’s -itsoffset adds a fixed offset to that input’s timestamps. It is suited to a measured start-time difference, not an error that grows throughout the stream.

For multiple inputs, -isync can adjust target timestamps against a reference input’s start time. FFmpeg says expected results require the inputs’ timestamps to come from the same clock source. It is not a general fix for independent capture devices whose clocks drift apart. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation and your installed build’s local documentation: FFmpeg’s online documentation tracks the newest revision, and older builds may not support the same options.

Check the encoder and YouTube ingest path

When a local recording is synchronized but YouTube playback is not, check the delivery path rather than compensating blindly at the audio input.

  1. Inspect encoder output. Check the stream in the encoder and review its logs for errors.
  2. Review YouTube’s Live Control Room. Look at the preview, stream-health indicator, and any messages about format or audio settings.
  3. Check the local archive. Confirm whether it remains synchronized over the same period as the YouTube playback.
  4. Check system load and connection. Review CPU load and test the outbound internet connection if encoder output appears healthy but YouTube playback does not.
  5. Verify current ingest settings. Compare the actual encoder configuration with YouTube’s current accepted settings and errors rather than changing codec, bitrate, or latency speculatively. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance and identifies incorrect stream format or audio settings as possible ingest errors in its live-stream error documentation.

For a representative test, include audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitor both audio and video. YouTube advises, “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream,” and says to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality” (encoder settings; stream monitoring).

Verify the repair before going live

  1. Run the same setup with representative audio and motion for long enough to see whether the offset changes.
  2. Inspect the local recording near the start and later in the test. Use ffplay -stats if useful.
  3. Check YouTube playback, Live Control Room health messages, and the archive.
  4. Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the comparison. Confirm that the fix holds over time without introducing a bad start or audible artifacts.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you observe Likely area to check Next step
Offset grows in the local recording Source timestamps, capture-device clocks, or audio resampling Check whether audio timestamps are a reliable reference; test aresample compensation and review the result at the start and later.
Local recording is synchronized, YouTube playback drifts Encoder output, ingest, archive, CPU load, or outbound connection Use the encoder and Live Control Room checks before altering input timestamps.
Offset is steady rather than growing Fixed input start-time mismatch Measure the difference; consider -itsoffset. Do not use a fixed offset to chase progressive drift.
-isync does not resolve changing drift Inputs may not share a timestamp clock Check the clock relationship; FFmpeg documents same-clock timestamps as a condition for expected -isync behavior.
Audio becomes padded, clipped, or distorted after resampling first_pts=0 assumption or compensation settings Inspect initial timestamps and audio; remove or tune the filter rather than keeping a setting that damages the output.
Live Control Room reports a stream or audio error Ingest format or audio settings Match the current YouTube guidance and resolve the specific reported error.
