How to Fix YouTube Live Rejecting an FFmpeg Stream Key During 24/7 Streaming

Check the selected YouTube stream’s current key and matching endpoint first. Then diagnose RTMP/RTMPS connection errors separately from codec and stream-health issues.

If YouTube Live rejects an FFmpeg stream key, first confirm that FFmpeg is sending the current key and matching stream URL for the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. Then check whether the failure is a key/stream-selection problem, an RTMP or RTMPS connection problem, or a stream-health validation error. “24/7” by itself does not identify the cause.

1. Confirm the stream and copy its current URL and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the scheduled or current stream that FFmpeg is meant to feed.

  2. In that stream’s settings, copy the Stream URL and Stream key shown there. Enter each in the corresponding destination field in your FFmpeg setup. Do not pair a key from one stream with a URL or path from another, or substitute an endpoint based on a guess.

  3. If the key was reset, or stream settings were changed or reused, update FFmpeg with the key currently shown for the selected stream. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a support request.

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key and ingestion destination work together; repeatedly changing encoding settings will not correct a stale or mismatched pair. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.

2. Separate key errors from connection errors

Look at the exact error and where the failure occurs. A connection timeout or SSL/TLS complaint points first to the endpoint and transport; a feed that reaches YouTube but fails checks points toward stream configuration or media health.

For RTMPS, use the endpoint shown for that stream

YouTube displays the ordinary RTMP URL by default; its Live Control Room has a lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. If using RTMPS, copy that URL and its server/path from the selected stream rather than changing only the protocol prefix. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its RTMPS guidance says port 443 is required; for the SSL error it describes, check that port 443 is specified in the URL or encoder configuration. If connection attempts time out, verify that the encoder supports RTMPS.

Check how the encoder expects the destination

Some encoder interfaces may require the stream URL and stream name to be combined, while others present separate fields. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documents primary and backup ingestion information and the need to combine URL and stream name depending on the encoder interface. Make sure FFmpeg’s destination format matches the interface and endpoint you are actually using; do not append or remove path components without checking the stream settings and your encoder’s requirements. See the LiveStreams API documentation.

3. If YouTube receives the feed, validate the emitted media

Check the stream FFmpeg is actually sending, not just what a command is intended to produce. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. It also gives bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate.

Example YouTube recommendation H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the bitrate. Match the output’s resolution and frame rate to the relevant entry in YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance. YouTube notes that 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.

A codec or configuration mismatch is not the same as a rejected key. Use the status in Live Control Room to decide whether to keep investigating the destination or correct the media format.

4. Use Live Control Room stream health to choose the next fix

Read the stream-health status and any specific messages rather than repeatedly replacing the key. YouTube’s API documentation lists health issues that include unsupported codecs and configuration mismatches. If YouTube reports a media or setup problem after the feed arrives, address that message; if the encoder never connects, return to the selected stream’s key, URL, protocol, and port checks.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before an event, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. Its encoder guidance and LiveStreams API health documentation explain the relevant checks.

5. Do not switch to HLS as a generic key fix

HLS is a different YouTube ingestion mode, not an automatic repair for an RTMP/RTMPS key rejection. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for muxed M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, HTTPS, and prescribed playlist and segment handling; it also notes that HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingestion. Consider it only when the configured stream and encoder call for HLS, and follow YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

6. Troubleshoot by the symptom

What you observe What to check next
YouTube rejects the key or does not recognize the intended stream Confirm the selected Live Control Room stream, then recopy its current key and matching Stream URL. Update FFmpeg if the key or stream settings changed.
RTMPS connection times out Confirm the copied RTMPS endpoint and verify that the encoder supports RTMPS.
SSL error while connecting over RTMPS Check that the RTMPS endpoint is correct and port 443 is specified as YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires.
The feed reaches YouTube but stream health reports an issue Follow the stated codec or configuration warning. Verify emitted codecs, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and the appropriate bitrate recommendation.
The stream connects but is unstable Check whether the chosen output bitrate is sustainable on the available uplink; YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not proof of your connection’s capacity.
You are considering HLS to get around the rejection Do not switch protocols unless your stream configuration and encoder support the separate HLS requirements.

7. What to include when asking for case-specific help

The right fix depends on details such as the FFmpeg command, URL form, exact error, and stream-health state. If you ask for help, include:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded documentaries or other prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg setup at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
