A restart alone is not described in YouTube’s guidance as canceling channel memberships. A membership belongs to the channel, while a live stream is a broadcast session that can be interrupted. But YouTube does not promise that earnings will be uninterrupted during a restart or that reconnecting will preserve the same live session or watch page. Check the stream after reconnecting and use your channel’s own reporting to see what happened.
Memberships and the live stream are separate
YouTube Help says viewers can buy a channel membership while watching a live stream, and some eligible channels can offer memberships as a channel feature. That means a live broadcast can present a membership opportunity; it does not make membership status dependent on one particular broadcast session. YouTube’s guidance does not say that restarting a stream cancels memberships.
There is an important limit to that answer: the cited guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted membership earnings through a restart, specify how a particular interruption affects revenue, or promise that a reconnect will continue the same session. Do not treat continued channel membership availability as proof that a specific stream earned continuously.
What a restart can change
Restarting the encoder
An encoder sends a feed to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe starting the encoder to create a watch page; they do not establish that every encoder restart preserves the original live session or watch page. After reconnecting, verify the current status rather than assuming viewers are back on the same session.

Ending the stream in YouTube
Stopping the feed and ending a stream in Live Control Room are distinct parts of the broadcast workflow. If you explicitly end the stream in YouTube, do not assume that restarting the encoder reopens the original session. Check Live Control Room and the public watch page to establish what viewers can currently see.
What to check after reconnecting
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm whether the stream is live, still receiving the encoder feed, or has ended. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the role of the stream URL and stream key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open the public watch page. Check that it loads and shows the expected live broadcast. Do not rely only on the encoder’s local status.
- Review your channel’s own membership and revenue reporting. YouTube’s general help pages do not predict the result for an individual restart; use your channel data rather than assuming a payout outcome.
- If the stream is unstable, investigate the feed and connection. YouTube recommends a reliable network and sufficient outbound bandwidth headroom. Its guidance also suggests checking encoder operation and outbound connection strength when troubleshooting: Streaming tips and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Long-stream archives and DVR are a different issue
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR features may be limited or unavailable. These are archive and playback qualifications, not evidence that memberships stop or continue earning during a restart. A 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as one guaranteed uninterrupted archived playback. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and DVR settings for live streams.
