There is no fixed data amount for uploading a 12-hour YouTube video: the best practical estimate is the encoded file’s size. For example, a 12-hour 1080p recording at YouTube’s recommended standard-frame-rate video bitrate, plus its recommended stereo audio bitrate, works out to about 45.3 GB in decimal units. A 4K file can be much larger. These are planning estimates, not fixed YouTube file sizes.
Estimate the upload from the file or bitrate
If the recording is already exported, check its file size: a single successful upload transfers roughly that many bytes. The video’s duration alone does not determine the amount. Resolution, frame rate, encoding choices, and the content itself affect the encoded bitrate and resulting file size.
To estimate from a sustained bitrate, add the audio bitrate to the video bitrate and use:
Total decimal GB = total bitrate in Mbps Ă— 5.4 for a 12-hour recording. Equivalently: bitrate in Mbps Ă— 12 hours Ă— 3,600 seconds per hour Ă· 8 bits per byte, converted to decimal gigabytes. For example, 8 Mbps video plus 384 kbps audio is 8.384 Mbps; over 12 hours that is about 45.3 decimal GB.

YouTube recommends 384 kbps stereo audio in its upload encoding guidance. Its video bitrate values are recommendations, not a guarantee of the file size: YouTube says variable bitrate is supported and no bitrate limit is required. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings
Estimated size for 12 hours of SDR video
The following estimates apply YouTube’s recommended video bitrates to a 12-hour recording and add 384 kbps stereo audio. They use decimal GB, where 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. The totals are calculations, not measurements or guarantees.

| Video setting | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Estimated 12-hour file size, including stereo audio |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, standard frame rate (24, 25, or 30 fps) | 5 Mbps | 29.1 GB |
| 720p, high frame rate (48, 50, or 60 fps) | 7.5 Mbps | 42.6 GB |
| 1080p, standard frame rate | 8 Mbps | 45.3 GB |
| 1080p, high frame rate | 12 Mbps | 66.9 GB |
| 1440p, standard frame rate | 16 Mbps | 88.5 GB |
| 1440p, high frame rate | 24 Mbps | 131.7 GB |
| 2160p / 4K, standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps | 191.1–245.1 GB |
| 2160p / 4K, high frame rate | 53–68 Mbps | 288.3–369.3 GB |
These figures use the SDR video recommendations. HDR recommendations differ: for instance, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p HDR at standard frame rate and 44–56 Mbps for 4K HDR at standard frame rate. Apply the same formula to the video bitrate and add the recommended audio bitrate for a suitable estimate. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance lists the recommended settings.
What changes the amount in practice
- Export settings: The table uses recommended bitrates for reference. Your actual export may use a different bitrate, so its size can differ. Check the exported file’s size for the closest estimate.
- Variable bitrate and content: YouTube’s recommendations are not a fixed required bitrate. A variable-bitrate encode can use different amounts of data across scenes, so duration and resolution alone cannot determine an exact total.
- Retries: The estimates assume one successful transfer of the whole file. If a connection drops and data is retransmitted, usage may increase; the amount depends on the connection and transfer behavior.
- GB display conventions: The table uses decimal GB. A device or provider may display storage or data units differently, so its displayed number may not match exactly.
What being in India changes—and what it does not
For a fixed video file, the number of bytes does not change because it is uploaded from India. What matters locally is whether your internet connection can sustain the upload, how long the transfer takes, and how your provider accounts for data or charges for usage. The table estimates the data transferred, not the upload time or the cost of a particular Indian plan.

Uploading is also different from watching a 12-hour YouTube stream. Playback data depends on the stream’s delivered quality and viewing conditions; it does not tell you the size of a recording being uploaded.
