It depends on what you mean by “prerecorded live stream.” For a normal video-file upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Those are separate workflows with different format requirements.
Choose the workflow first
A video file uploaded through YouTube Studio is not the same as prerecorded footage sent to YouTube as a live encoder feed. The first uses YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings; the second uses its live ingestion settings. The recommendations below describe YouTube’s published guidance, not a guarantee that every other format will be rejected.
| Workflow | Container or transport | Video | Audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video upload | MP4 recommended | H.264 recommended | AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio |
| Prerecorded footage sent as a live encoder feed | RTMP/RTMPS | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | AAC or MP3 |
| HDR live stream | RTMP(S) or HLS; HLS instructions specify TS segments | HEVC, 10-bit HDR | Depends on encoder and configuration |

For an ordinary video-file upload
YouTube’s recommended upload combination is MP4, H.264 video, and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. These are upload recommendations; do not confuse them with the codecs available for live ingestion.

For prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder
When software or a cloud service sends the footage to YouTube as a live feed, follow the live encoder guidance instead of treating the source file’s container as the whole answer. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as the ingestion protocol, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio.

Key live settings
- Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- The published live guidance supports up to 60 fps.
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for playback, so the encoder’s ingestion settings do not need to match every viewer’s playback format. YouTube’s live encoder settings page also recommends testing with representative motion and audio, then checking the preview and stream health.
Connect the encoder securely
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key in the live stream settings.
- Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, then configure the codec and live settings above.
- Start a test feed and check the YouTube preview and stream health before relying on it for an important broadcast.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube explains the settings in Manage live stream settings.

HDR live streams have additional requirements
For HDR live streaming, YouTube’s guidance specifies HEVC and a 10-bit HDR configuration. Its HLS instructions require TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds. AV1 is not listed as supported for HDR in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Check the dedicated HDR live streaming instructions and the encoder settings for the applicable setup; do not assume SDR live settings are sufficient for HDR.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish the same automatic archive treatment for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Common format and setup problems
- Upload settings used for a live encoder feed: MP4/H.264 upload guidance does not describe all live ingestion options. Configure the outgoing feed using YouTube’s live encoder requirements.
- Keyframes too far apart: Set the live encoder to 2 seconds and keep the interval at or below 4 seconds.
- Audio does not match the workflow: The upload recommendations and live feed options differ. Check that the audio codec is listed for the path you are using.
- HDR feed fails or is not HDR: Verify HEVC, 10-bit HDR configuration, and—if using HLS—TS segment duration of 1–4 seconds.
- Feed does not appear in YouTube: Confirm the stream URL and key are entered correctly, then inspect the Studio preview and stream health. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
