Before you start: enable YouTube live streaming and clear your rights
In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming before your planned launch. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and activation guidance in YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
Use audio you own or have explicit permission to livestream. A consumer music subscription should not be assumed to grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party matches; a match can replace the stream image, interrupt the broadcast or terminate it. Even licensed music may be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
For an India-based channel, the Copyright Act’s definition of communication to the public includes making works available by display or diffusion. That is relevant background, not legal advice or a complete licensing checklist. Confirm permission for both the livestream and any recording or archive with the applicable rights holders; consult a qualified adviser if needed. Build a looping radio scene in OBS
- Install OBS Studio for Windows. Download it from the OBS Project. The guidance here does not establish a current minimum PC specification or OBS version, so check the current installer requirements for your system.
- Create a scene and visual. In OBS, add a still image, title card or schedule graphic so the YouTube stream has a visual while the audio plays. Keep it simple and use only images you have the right to use.
- Add a single audio file. Add a Media Source, choose a local file, and enable Loop to repeat it. OBS Media Sources supports common formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV and MP4. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Or build a rotation with a VLC playlist. Add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. Confirm the playlist files are stored locally and that the order and transitions behave as intended before going live.
- Preview the scene and audio. Confirm the correct file or playlist repeats, the visual is visible, and the audio is audible without clipping or silence. Test the complete setup before a public launch.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open stream settings and enter the server URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check that the preview appears in Live Control Room and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal. Start the YouTube event as prompted by the workflow you selected.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains entering the server URL and key in an encoder. Use the stream key associated with the intended event, and verify the preview before relying on the stream.
Set video and bitrate for the upload connection you actually have
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to your available connection, testing upload capacity and checking stream health. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted transport option. See its encoder settings.

These are selected H.264 recommendations from YouTube’s encoder table, not broadband-plan speeds or a measure of typical Indian internet service:

Choose a bitrate below the stable upload capacity you have measured, leaving headroom for fluctuations, then test at that setting. A peak speed test is not proof of a stable 24-hour connection. India’s National Informatics Centre cites 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream for its hired-agency webcast service; that figure describes the NIC service context, not a YouTube setting or a universal home-internet requirement. Keep the Windows PC running and prepare for interruptions
- Prevent sleep during the broadcast. Adjust Windows power settings so the PC does not sleep while streaming. Menus vary by Windows edition and version; check the active power plan and test that the screen turning off does not also put the computer to sleep.
- Keep the media available. Store the audio and playlist files on the PC, and avoid paths on removable drives or network locations that might disconnect. Close applications that could interrupt audio playback or consume the upload connection.
- Prefer a stable network path. Wired Ethernet is a sensible option when available, but it is not a YouTube requirement. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health rather than assuming a connection is stable because it worked during setup.
- Plan for local power failure. A UPS for the PC and router can help with brief interruptions; choose capacity based on the equipment and runtime you need. No specific UPS size or runtime is established here.
- Know what reconnect does—and does not—do. OBS has an automatic reconnect setting. OBS says dropped frames indicate that the network is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; reduce bitrate and investigate the network path. Reconnection cannot keep a stream going through a power cut, prolonged internet failure or a crashed PC.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check audio and video quality during operation and watch local recording or archive file growth if you are recording. YouTube recommends monitoring and checking stream health; a backup encoder may help only if your setup supports and tests failover.

Understand YouTube’s archive limit for long streams
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” It does not promise a complete archive for a single stream longer than 12 hours, so do not depend on a one-session 24-hour broadcast being preserved in full. If an archive matters, use separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and/or make a local recording, then verify the resulting archive in your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
