A variable-bitrate (VBR) video file can be used in an OBS playlist; VBR by itself is not a reason the file will fail. For a playlist, OBS documents the VLC Video source, which requires VLC to be installed. Whether a particular file plays still depends on its container, codecs, decoding support and system. The file’s bitrate and OBS’s outgoing YouTube stream bitrate are separate settings.
How to add a playlist to OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and choose the local files for the playlist.
- Set playback behavior. Use the source options to choose whether the playlist loops or shuffles. Adjust visibility behavior or network caching if relevant to your setup.
- Test playback before going live. Check that each file decodes and plays as expected in the playlist, then run a test stream. OBS recommends testing a setup before its first live stream.
For one file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source may be sufficient. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM as Media Source video formats, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV as audio formats. Those are documented formats, not a guarantee that every codec or encoding variant inside a container will work identically. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Why the file’s VBR does not set your stream bitrate
VBR describes how the local video file was encoded: its bitrate can vary as the content requires. OBS’s output bitrate and rate control govern the separate stream it sends to YouTube. A VBR label on the source file therefore does not, on its own, determine the outgoing bitrate or explain a connection problem.
OBS documents VBR target-quality mode with a maximum bitrate among the NVENC options for OBS 31.0. That describes an output encoder option, not a rule for playing VBR source files. Likewise, OBS’s guidance about keeping a consistent keyframe interval within YouTube’s recommendations concerns the outgoing stream, not a requirement that every playlist file be encoded at constant bitrate. See the OBS Project’s Advanced NVENC Options (31.0) and Transcodes / Transcoding pages.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure the outgoing stream separately
Choose OBS’s output encoder and bitrate for the intended YouTube stream, using current platform guidance and the upload capacity your connection can sustain. OBS notes that video bitrate depends on upload speed and service limitations. Its overview recommends testing before a first live stream; the official guide is available at OBS Studio Overview Guide. Exact YouTube ingest settings are not established here, so check YouTube’s current official live encoder guidance rather than treating the source file’s bitrate as an output target.
Troubleshoot playback and stream problems
A playlist item will not play
- Confirm VLC is installed and its bitness matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Test the file in the VLC Video source and check whether its container and codecs decode on your system. OBS’s listed formats do not promise compatibility with every encoding inside those containers.
- If you only need to play one local file, try Media Source rather than a playlist source.
OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames point to connection instability or a configured stream bitrate the connection cannot sustain—not the source file’s VBR label alone. Check the outgoing bitrate against stable upload capacity and service limits, then lower it if necessary. Follow OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance.

Viewers report buffering, but OBS is not dropping frames
Viewer buffering can occur even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. Check the platform’s recommendations and investigate the viewer-side or platform delivery issue rather than assuming the playlist file’s VBR is the cause. See OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting page.
