After power returns, restore Windows and your internet connection, open your encoder, verify its YouTube server URL and stream key, then start sending the feed. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health; for a scheduled broadcast, click Go live when the preview is ready unless auto-start is enabled. A computer reboot or encoder restart alone does not guarantee that the same broadcast resumes.
Recover the stream in order
A power cut affects several separate links in the chain: the computer must start, the network must reconnect, the encoder must send video, and YouTube must receive and publish it. Check each link rather than assuming that a running PC—or encoder—means viewers can see the radio stream.
- Restore the computer and network. Wait for Windows to finish starting, sign in if needed, and confirm the PC has internet access. If the computer does not power on when electricity returns, its firmware may have a power-restoration setting, often called something like “Restore on AC/Power Loss.” Names and behavior vary by device; consult the PC or motherboard maker’s documentation rather than assuming Windows controls it. - Open the encoder. Launch the software used to send the radio feed, such as OBS, and load the correct scene or media source. If you configured Windows to open the encoder automatically, still verify that it actually launched and loaded the intended setup. OBS community discussions describe startup automation, but do not establish a reliable, universal method that also resumes a YouTube broadcast: OBS Project Forums.
- Verify YouTube connection details. In the encoder, check the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both; a power cut alone is not documented as a reason the key must be replaced. Treat the key like a password: keep it private. If the encoder reports a start error, copy the current key from YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder settings. - Start sending the feed. Start the encoder’s stream output. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and then select Go live. If auto-start is enabled for that broadcast, the encoder can start it; check the setting rather than assuming it is on. YouTube also provides optional auto-stop controls. - Confirm what viewers receive. Check the Live Control Room preview, audio, video, and stream health. The encoder showing “streaming” is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed or that a scheduled broadcast is public.
Check settings that affect a radio stream
Audio and video output
For a radio-style stream, confirm that the intended audio source is active and audible in the preview. If the broadcast uses a still image or visualizer, check that it is also present. YouTube’s computer streaming guidance recommends preparing the encoder and checking the preview before going live: YouTube live streaming tips for computer.
Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Do not pick a bitrate from a generic “radio stream” recipe. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec, and ensure your connection can sustain the total bitrate. For reference, YouTube’s current settings page lists 6 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 720p60 and 10 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30; those are recommendations for those specific configurations, not recovery guarantees or universal targets. Check the current table before changing encoder output: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Upload capacity and stream health
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Its guidance warns that a connectivity disruption could mean a broken stream. If the feed reconnects but health indicators remain poor, check the network connection and available upload capacity as well as encoder output: YouTube streaming tips.
Why a reboot may not resume the same broadcast
Power returning, Windows starting, the encoder opening, and YouTube publishing are distinct events. Firmware settings may power on a computer after electricity returns, and Windows or the encoder may be configured to launch software at startup, but neither step establishes that YouTube has resumed the prior broadcast. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream flow includes a preview and a Go live action unless auto-start is enabled. The available Microsoft Q&A and OBS forum discussions are community material and do not guarantee end-to-end recovery.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not promise that reconnecting after an outage preserves one continuous broadcast or archive. Check YouTube Studio after recovery to see what was recorded: YouTube encoder workflow.

For any automatic recovery setup, test with an unlisted stream and make sure you know how to stop it. YouTube’s network guidance supports reducing interruption risk but does not endorse a particular UPS brand or size.

Troubleshoot a stream that will not return
- The PC is off or Windows has not finished starting: restore power, wait for startup to complete, and check the device maker’s instructions for firmware power-restoration behavior.
- The encoder is not open or has the wrong scene: launch it manually and select the intended radio sources. Do not treat a startup shortcut or scheduled task as proof the feed is configured correctly.
- The encoder reports a connection or key error: verify the server URL and stream key. If needed, copy the key from Live Control Room and replace the encoder’s saved value, following YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
- The encoder sends, but YouTube has no usable preview: check internet access, encoder output, and stream health. Review YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and leave the recommended upload headroom.
- The preview appears but the scheduled stream is not live: use Go live unless auto-start is enabled for that broadcast.
- The stream returns but the archive is unclear: inspect the recording in YouTube Studio. The under-12-hour archive rule does not establish that an outage reconnect remains one continuous event.
