The NAS must send a live encoder feed to YouTube; simply storing video files or sharing them on your network does not make them a livestream. Whether a particular NAS can do the job depends on its model, software support, and encoding performance.
How a NAS-based livestream works
YouTube Help describes the role of an encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” A NAS-hosted setup uses the NAS for both media storage and the continuously running encoder process.
- Store the prerecorded videos on the NAS, and confirm you have the necessary rights to the video and audio.
- Check whether the exact NAS model and operating-system version support a runtime for your chosen encoder. Container support is model- and software-version-dependent; having a NAS or a container package alone does not establish that it can encode your chosen format in real time.
- Configure an encoder to loop or sequence the files and send a YouTube-compatible live feed. Verify the specific software’s looping, restart, and recovery behavior; these vary by encoder.
- Create or schedule a YouTube live event, then configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key.
- Preview the event, check stream health and audio/video quality, and monitor the NAS process and network connection.

Check the NAS before committing to it
NAS capabilities vary. For example, Synology’s Container Manager is intended to run container applications on DSM, but its compatibility is limited to listed models. That does not establish that every supported model has enough encoding capacity for a particular resolution, codec, or frame rate. Check the exact model, DSM version, runtime compatibility, codec support, CPU or hardware-encoding capability, and ability to restart the encoder after a failure. - Processing headroom: Encoding video can add sustained work alongside the NAS’s storage and other services. Confirm the hardware can handle the intended output rather than assuming file playback performance is enough.
- Continuous operation: Consider what happens during NAS updates, scheduled reboots, process crashes, or power loss. Plan for restart behavior and alerts.
- Network upload: The NAS needs a stable outbound connection with headroom above the stream’s bitrate, not merely a fast local network.
- Testability: Test the complete path—from file playback to YouTube preview—before relying on an unattended stream.
YouTube account, ingest, and bandwidth requirements
Account and event setup
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Protocol, codec, and bitrate
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure form of RTMP. Its encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 in supported configurations; check that the chosen NAS encoder supports the codec and output settings you plan to use. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube recommends a 4 Mbps bitrate. That figure applies to that resolution and frame rate; it is not a universal setting for other outputs. Upload capacity
YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and warns that a network disruption can break a stream. For example, a 4 Mbps video stream needs more than 4 Mbps of dependable upload capacity; do not plan against the connection’s advertised or theoretical maximum. What changes when the stream is made for kids
If the livestream is designated as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still be shown. These restrictions affect audience interaction and advertising expectations. An encoder working correctly does not establish that a particular repetitive or looped children’s program meets YouTube’s content, rights, originality, or monetization policies. Review the rules against the actual material and planned use, and do not assume that a continuous stream will qualify for monetization.
Plan for testing and interruptions
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Preview the feed and check audio and video quality before relying on it. A 24/7 setup also needs a plan for NAS restarts, encoder crashes, power loss, router or ISP outages, and interruptions on YouTube’s side. Platform guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted service. A UPS may keep the NAS and network equipment powered through some local power interruptions, depending on its capacity and runtime. It will not prevent an ISP outage or a YouTube-side interruption; size one for the connected load and the runtime you need.
Archives are not necessarily one full-day video
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single 24-hour event will be saved as one archive.
