For an unattended audio relay from Icecast to YouTube Live, FFmpeg is the better-documented starting point. It can read network inputs and send a stream to an RTMP destination. OBS is the more natural choice when you need a person to manage a visual scene, but the exact steps for using an Icecast mountpoint as OBS audio input depend on the feed and OBS version and are not established by the official material cited here.
Neither option removes the need to check codecs, configure YouTube ingest correctly, and test the complete path. This comparison is about documented capabilities, not a hands-on test or a performance ranking.
How the Icecast-to-YouTube path works
- Icecast supplies the input. A source client publishes audio to an Icecast server and mountpoint. A listener or encoder connects to the mountpoint URL; the setup can involve a server address, port, source password, and mountpoint. Icecast documentation describes this source-and-listener model.
- FFmpeg or OBS handles the outgoing stream. The encoder receives or selects the feed, then packages and sends output in a format YouTube accepts. FFmpeg documents network inputs and output URLs, including RTMP; OBS is a production and encoding application. FFmpeg protocol documentation and OBS documentation describe those tools.
- YouTube provides the destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the ingest URL and stream key, enter them in the encoder, then check the preview before going live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the process.
The Icecast listen URL is an input endpoint; the YouTube ingest URL and stream key are output credentials. The Icecast source password and YouTube stream key are different secrets. Keep both private.
FFmpeg vs OBS: which fits your broadcast?
| Choice | Best fit | What is established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Headless forwarding, automation, scripting, or direct control over stream mapping and encoding. | Its documentation covers network inputs and output URLs, RTMP output, and an Icecast protocol. | The documentation does not guarantee one copy-and-paste command for every Icecast format, authentication method, codec, or operating system. Check the installed build and the specific feed. |
| OBS | A broadcast that needs an operator-managed visual layout, artwork, a visualizer, or scene switching. | OBS is an encoder and production application. | The official OBS material cited here does not establish exact steps for opening any Icecast mountpoint directly as an audio source. Validate the actual feed URL and installed release before relying on the workflow. |
Decision rule: choose FFmpeg when the main task is relaying a feed without an operator; choose OBS when interactive visuals and scene control matter more. The feed’s codec, authentication, video treatment, operating system, latency needs, and whether transcoding is necessary can change the implementation. No comparative CPU, reliability, latency, or quality test is available here.

Check the audio format and decide whether YouTube needs video
Before configuring either encoder, identify what the mountpoint actually serves: for example, MP3, AAC, Ogg/Opus, or another format. Confirm whether the feed can be copied through or must be transcoded, and whether its authentication method is supported by the encoder build you plan to use. FFmpeg’s network and protocol documentation describes available building blocks, but compatibility with a particular feed is not guaranteed by that alone.
An audio-only Icecast source may need a still image, slate, or other video if the selected YouTube ingest setup requires video. The cited documentation does not establish one universal method for constructing that output, so choose and validate the video treatment and container as part of your specific configuration rather than assuming the audio mountpoint alone is sufficient.

Configure YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use YouTube’s current table for the combination of codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select; there is no single bitrate that fits every profile.
| Example video profile | YouTube-listed H.264 minimum | YouTube-listed H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published configuration recommendations, not independent performance measurements or guarantees. Its advanced audio settings list 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check the current encoder page before a broadcast for the settings relevant to your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec: YouTube Live encoder settings.

Preflight the complete route
- Verify the Icecast endpoint. Confirm hostname or address, port, mountpoint path, source format, and any credentials the mount requires.
- Prepare the YouTube destination. In Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream URL, key, and protocol. Treat the key like a password. If it is compromised, YouTube documents how to reset it in Live Control Room: stream setup and key management.
- Match output settings to YouTube. Check output codec, container, audio format, keyframe interval, and bitrate against the current YouTube guidance. Prefer RTMPS where supported.
- Test before the event. Use a private or scheduled test with representative audio and any intended visuals. Confirm that the YouTube preview has audio, levels are suitable, and stream health is acceptable.
- Leave upload headroom and monitor. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom. Monitor audio, video, and stream health during the broadcast, and have a plan for a feed disconnect or encoder restart. YouTube’s guidance says to test before starting a live stream: encoder settings and live streaming tips.
Common problems and what to check
- The encoder cannot open the Icecast feed: recheck the hostname, port, mountpoint spelling, network access, and any required source credentials. Confirm that the installed encoder build can read the feed’s protocol and format.
- YouTube receives no audio: check that the correct Icecast input is selected, that the feed is playing, and that the output audio codec and channel settings are supported. Listen to the source separately if possible, then recheck YouTube’s preview.
- The feed plays but the YouTube stream is rejected or unstable: compare the output protocol, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and container with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Also confirm that the outgoing connection has adequate upload capacity.
- The stream has audio but no usable picture: determine whether your chosen ingest profile requires video and whether the encoder is supplying a valid video stream. An audio feed alone does not provide a visual track.
- The relay stops after a disconnect: check the Icecast source and network first, then the encoder process and YouTube stream health. For a compromised YouTube key, reset it in Live Control Room; for ordinary interruptions, plan how the encoder will be restarted and the stream rechecked.
