To keep an internet radio station live on YouTube, create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into an encoder, then keep both the program source and encoder running. The key is a credential—not the radio feed or an app. You can run the encoder on a computer or use standalone hardware; the right setup depends on your station’s playout system and the quality your upload connection can sustain.
What a YouTube stream key does
The stream URL tells an encoder where to send your live feed. The stream key identifies the stream and authorizes the encoder to connect. YouTube describes stream keys as being like a stream’s password and address. Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s corresponding fields; the key alone does not provide audio, schedule music, or keep a broadcast running.
For an always-on station, you need a source that produces the program feed and an encoder that sends it to YouTube. Both must remain operational for the broadcast to continue.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
Check live-stream eligibility
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete this step before your planned launch.

Create or select a stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- Choose its privacy setting: public, private, or unlisted. Set this deliberately; privacy controls who can find or watch the broadcast, not whether your encoder can send it.
Copy the connection details
In the stream’s settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, paste the URL into the server or stream URL field and the key into the stream-key field. Field names differ between encoders, so match the purpose of the field rather than relying on an identical label.
Connect the encoder and go live
- Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders running on computers and standalone hardware encoders. Select one that supports your intended audio/video feed and the automation your station needs; YouTube does not prescribe a universal computer specification or a particular radio automation product.
- Configure the outgoing feed. Enter the stream URL and key, then choose a quality and bitrate your actual upload connection can sustain. Test the complete setup before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
- Start sending the feed. Start the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
- Start the YouTube broadcast if needed. Use the Go live control when the stream configuration requires it. Auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether you need to start or stop the broadcast manually in Live Control Room.
- Keep the source and encoder operating. The playout system must continue producing the station’s program, and the encoder must continue sending it. Monitor the connection and stream health during operation.
Plan reliability, quality, and archiving
Match quality to upload capacity
YouTube recommends testing before going live, selecting a quality your upload connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health. A setting that works during a brief test may still be unsuitable if the connection is unstable under your normal operating conditions. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers.

Plan for interruptions
An always-on label does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery. A computer, encoder, source system, or internet connection can fail. Decide who will monitor the station and how the source and encoder will be restarted after an interruption; YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal 24/7 reliability guarantee.
Make a separate archive plan for long runs
YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume that a continuous broadcast lasting longer will appear as one complete automatic archive. If you need a full recording of longer runs, arrange an independent recording workflow and verify it separately.

Protect the stream key and follow broadcast rules
Keep the key private
Treat the stream key as a secret credential. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key before reconnecting.
Check simultaneous-stream limits
YouTube currently documents a limit of up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Both limits apply, so check them when planning multiple broadcasts.

Clear rights to what you broadcast
Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. You also need the rights required for the music and other content you broadcast. Requirements depend on the content and territory; YouTube’s platform guidance does not determine the rights needed for a particular station.

- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the stream URL and key are in the correct fields and that you selected the intended stream. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder.
- The stream is not visible as live: Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. If the encoder is sending successfully, verify whether the configuration requires you to select Go live or whether auto-start is enabled.
- The feed drops or stream health is poor: Test the connection and lower the encoder’s quality or bitrate to a level the upload connection can sustain. Check the source, encoder, and network rather than assuming the key itself is the cause.
- The first broadcast cannot be enabled yet: Confirm channel verification and eligibility, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time live streaming to become available.
- A long broadcast has no complete archive: Automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Use an independent recording workflow for longer continuous runs.
