You still need an audio source, an encoder, reliable power and internet, and the necessary rights to broadcast your programming. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise a complete archive for a longer continuous stream.
What Live Control Room does—and what it does not
YouTube Live Control Room manages an encoder-based livestream. Your station’s automation or other audio source supplies the program; an encoder sends that feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. Control Room receives and publishes the incoming stream, and can display stream health and options such as auto-start and auto-stop.
That workflow can put a radio program in front of YouTube viewers, but it is not radio automation. Control Room does not select tracks, create the audio feed, keep your encoder process running, or guarantee uninterrupted playback. YouTube’s own streaming tips warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube’s general guidance requires channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. Confirm eligibility on the channel you will use. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An audio source, such as station automation, that can play the program you intend to broadcast.
- An encoder that can send the feed to YouTube. YouTube supports software encoder workflows; dedicated hardware is optional, not mandatory.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- Rights and licenses applicable to your repertoire, broadcast and territories.
How to start an encoder-based radio livestream
- Check channel eligibility. Verify the channel and confirm that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general eligibility page sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a livestream. Use the stream details and settings appropriate to your program.
- Configure the audio source and encoder. Make sure the source is playing the intended program, then enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Choose compatible output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the TLS-encrypted version of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. For ordinary stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps. Use settings your encoder supports and that suit your actual audio and any visual presentation; recommendations do not guarantee quality or uptime. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. For example, a stream totaling 2 Mbps calls for more than 2 Mbps available upload capacity, with additional room for fluctuations and other network use.
- Start sending the feed and wait for preview. Start the encoder, confirm that Live Control Room receives the stream and inspect the preview and stream health before publishing.
- Start the livestream. Start it from Live Control Room unless the configured workflow uses auto-start. Monitor audio and video quality while it is live; YouTube’s tips recommend continuous monitoring.
Can one YouTube stream stay live continuously?
Live Control Room can manage a stream for as long as the source, encoder, power and connection keep it operating, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise 24/7 service or uninterrupted playback. A station’s continuity depends on every link in the chain: the audio automation or source, encoder process, power, network, and YouTube’s ingestion and publishing workflow.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube specifically warns that a network disruption could break the stream and recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Its streaming tips also describe testing failover between primary and backup encoders. Testing redundancy and monitoring the stream can reduce operational risk, but neither establishes a guaranteed uptime level or ensures automatic recovery in every case. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Archives: the 12-hour limit to plan around
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder setup guidance does not promise that an uninterrupted stream exceeding 12 hours will be archived in full. If you need a complete recording, make a separate local recording and check that it is being saved and that the resulting file is usable. YouTube advises operators to verify local archive files and monitor audio and video quality. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Music rights and livestream eligibility
Putting a radio program on YouTube does not transfer responsibility for its content rights to the platform. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers—including public performance licenses—and other royalty participants. They also require the provider to meet applicable territory requirements and maintain required licenses or approvals.
The exact obligations depend on your location, repertoire and agreements; the general terms cannot determine which licenses a particular station needs. Check that your rights cover the intended use and territory before broadcasting. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

Run your own source and encoder
If your station needs a live audio source or wants direct control of its automation and encoding, keep those systems running on your own equipment or a suitable host. Build in monitoring, backup power and connectivity where appropriate, and test the recovery procedure rather than assuming the connection will never fail. A dedicated hardware encoder may be useful for a station that wants a separate purpose-built encoder source, but it is not required by YouTube; check current compatibility, supported protocol, failover behavior and fit with your audio chain.

How to choose the right setup
If deciding between YouTube and a dedicated internet-radio hosting service, compare the actual requirements rather than assuming they are interchangeable. Check documented continuous-play and recovery behavior, session and archive limits, listener access and player or embed needs, who handles rights reporting and geographic licensing, available monitoring and support, and whether you need a traditional radio stream endpoint as well as a YouTube presence. YouTube Live Control Room is a publishing workflow for an encoder stream; it is not, by itself, a complete internet-radio hosting or automation system.
