If OBS skips the first gaming VOD in a YouTube Live playlist, first identify the source type: OBS’s built-in VLC Video source supports playlists, while the standard Media Source is for an individual file. The right checks depend on which source you added; there is no confirmed universal fix for this exact symptom.
1. Identify the source that is playing the VODs
In OBS, inspect the source in the scene where the problem occurs. It may be a standard Media Source, the built-in VLC Video source, or the separate Media Playlist Source plugin. Their settings and behavior are not interchangeable.
- Media Source: Intended for an individual media file, not a playlist. OBS’s documentation distinguishes it from VLC Video: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Media Sources documentation.
- VLC Video: OBS’s built-in source for playing a playlist. It requires VLC to be installed, and the VLC architecture must match OBS’s.
- Media Playlist Source: A separate OBS plugin with its own requirements, version history, and behavior.
The description “skips the first gaming VOD” identifies the reported symptom, but does not by itself establish which source is responsible or whether this is a known widespread bug.
2. If you use VLC Video, check its installation and playlist settings
- Match VLC and OBS architectures. Install VLC if it is missing. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS’s documentation says to use 64-bit VLC. A mismatch can prevent VLC Video from working as expected.
- Verify the playlist order. Inspect the entries in the VLC Video source and confirm the intended first VOD is actually first in the list. If playback must begin with a specific file, make sure shuffle is off. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- Check loop behavior. OBS documents VLC Video’s playlist loop setting as on by default. Looping concerns what happens at the end of the list; it does not, on its own, prove why an item is skipped at startup.
- Review visibility behavior. OBS documents VLC Video as stopping when it is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. Check whether a scene change or source visibility change happens around startup, and whether the source becomes hidden before the first item begins.
- Review relevant playback settings. VLC Video also exposes network caching and audio-track settings. These are worth inspecting when relevant to the media or playback symptom, but the available documentation does not identify them as a specific fix for skipping the first playlist item.
3. If you use Media Playlist Source, check plugin and OBS versions
Media Playlist Source is a plugin, not OBS’s built-in VLC Video source. Check the plugin’s stated requirements and compare your installed version and OBS version with its OBS resource page and release history.

The plugin’s version 0.1.3 release notes, dated April 13, 2025, include a fix for continuing to the next item after a scene transition and another for continuing when a file path repeats. These are relevant checks if your setup involves either case, but the notes do not confirm that the plugin causes or resolves this exact first-item symptom. The plugin resource also describes editing the playlist without restarting playback and saving the current file across OBS restarts.
If the plugin does not appear under Add Source after installation, compare the installed plugin with the resource’s requirements and installation guidance; do not apply VLC Video instructions to it.

4. Reproduce the issue safely before changing a live broadcast
- Use a short, harmless local file sequence rather than risking an important live broadcast.
- Note which entry is first and whether the expected first file starts.
- Observe whether a scene transition occurs before playback advances, and check whether a file path repeats in the list.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the same sequence so you can tell whether that change affected the behavior.
This is a suggested diagnostic procedure, not a confirmed reproduction of the reported issue. If it persists, collect the OBS log, source type, OBS and plugin versions, operating system, playlist order, and the exact steps that reproduce it before asking for support.
5. Keep OBS playlists separate from YouTube HLS ingestion
An OBS playlist of local VOD files is different from YouTube’s HLS ingestion playlist. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide and HLS Help page concern media segments and sequence numbers submitted by an encoder. Those requirements do not establish why OBS skipped an item in a local playlist, so changing HLS settings is not a grounded first response to this symptom.

6. A single-file Media Source has a different activation setting
An OBS forum answer for a single Media Source recommends unchecking “Restart playback when source becomes active” when the goal is to resume a file after switching away and back. That advice concerns activation behavior for an individual file; it is not a proven fix for a playlist that skips its first VOD. See the OBS forum discussion.
