OBS Studio is the best free starting point for a Windows gaming stream that captures recent gameplay and lets you play selected replays on YouTube Live. It is free, open source, and built around flexible scene composition and streaming. Streamlabs Desktop is a credible alternative if you prefer its integrated instant-replay controls. The right setup depends on what you mean by “rotate replays”: saving recent footage for later is different from airing a saved clip during the live show.
What “rotate replays” can mean
There are two separate jobs that are often confused:
- Save recent gameplay: a replay buffer keeps a rolling amount of recent footage available to save as a clip. This is useful for editing or posting after the stream.
- Play a replay on the live broadcast: a saved clip must be added to the stream’s production and played as a source. A replay buffer alone does not put footage on air.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming to YouTube. Desktop streaming apps can serve as that software encoder, while also composing the scenes and sources viewers see. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Set up a replay workflow before going live
1. Decide whether you need a clip or an on-air replay
If you only want to save standout moments for later, set up the replay buffer and a save control. If viewers should see a replay during the broadcast, plan a separate playback source or scene in your stream layout. Keep the two actions distinct so saving a clip does not accidentally mean switching what is on air.
2. Configure and test the replay buffer
Use the chosen app’s current help guidance for its replay-buffer settings and controls; interface labels can change between versions. Set a replay duration appropriate to the moments you want to capture, start the buffer, and assign a convenient save-replay control. - Start the replay buffer before the gameplay you may want to save.
- Test the save-replay control and verify that a clip is actually created.
- If you intend to play clips live, add the clip to the broadcast layout and rehearse the transition between gameplay and replay.
- Check the sound mix and return to the gameplay scene after playback.
Streamlabs explicitly advises testing replay buffer operation before going live. Apply the same practical check whichever app you use: confirm the buffer is running and that the saved clip can be found or played.
3. Rehearse the live transition
Use a private or test broadcast to practice switching to the replay and back. Check that the replay appears in the intended scene, its audio is audible at an appropriate level, and the gameplay feed returns afterward. Do not rely on a replay feature alone to manage the on-air transition.

Common problems and fixes
- No clip is saved: confirm the replay buffer was started before the moment occurred, then test the save control again.
- The saved replay is not visible to viewers: saving footage is not the same as playing it on air. Add the clip as a playback source in the production and switch to the appropriate scene.
- The replay has no sound or the mix is wrong: check the replay source and scene audio levels during rehearsal, before using it in a live broadcast.
- The stream does not show the intended layout: verify that the correct scene is active and that the replay source is included in it.
