Video on demand (VOD) lets viewers choose what to watch and when, instead of tuning in at a scheduled broadcast time. For creators, VOD is a way to make recorded video available for later viewing; it is not one platform, delivery technology, or payment model. A VOD library might be free, ad-supported, subscription-based, or sold title by title.
What VOD means
VOD stands for video on demand: video a viewer can access at a time they choose. That contrasts with a scheduled broadcast, where the audience must watch at a particular time. VOD content is commonly recorded and edited before viewing, although a recording of a livestream can also be made available on demand afterward. Google Cloud describes the distinction between VOD and live streaming.
VOD describes the viewing arrangement, not how the video was made or the mechanism used to deliver it. A documentary, lesson, interview, or livestream replay can all be VOD if viewers can select and watch them on their own schedule.
VOD, OTT, CTV, and live streaming are not the same
- VOD describes access: the viewer selects content to watch on demand.
- OTT describes delivery over the internet. VOD can be delivered over the internet, cable, or satellite; OTT is therefore not another name for all VOD. The World Intellectual Property Organization explains the distinction.
- CTV means a connected television or TV-connected device. It describes the screen or device, not whether viewing is on demand or how it is paid for.
- Live streaming delivers video in real time. A creator can broadcast live and later offer the recording as VOD, but the live event and its replay are different viewing modes.
A viewer might, for example, select a documentary from an internet-delivered library on a connected television: that is VOD delivered OTT and watched on CTV. The terms describe separate parts of the experience.

How creators can fund VOD
VOD does not dictate a price or monetization method. The common models describe how access is funded; individual services may combine them, and their terms determine what viewers actually see.
| Model | How access is funded | What the viewer experiences |
|---|---|---|
| AVOD | Advertising | Selects on-demand video; ads may appear. |
| SVOD | Recurring subscription | Access under subscription terms; ads may or may not be included. |
| TVOD | Payment for an individual title | Rents or purchases a specific video. |
| PVOD | Premium price or special-access charge | Pays extra for an offer described as premium or special access. The term’s meaning varies by provider. |
| FAST | Advertising | Watches a scheduled linear channel rather than choosing each title from an on-demand library. |
These definitions follow Amazon Ads’ overview of VOD models and the IAB Europe CTV Definitions Framework 2025. Some services are hybrid: a subscription tier may include advertising, or a subscription may offer extra titles for a separate transaction. FAST is often free and ad-supported, but it is scheduled programming, not VOD merely because it is streamed.

What VOD means for a documentary creator
Putting a documentary online as VOD means viewers can choose when to watch it. The creator’s practical decisions are about access and rights: whether the film is public, restricted to subscribers, rented or purchased, ad-supported, or offered through a combination. Check the platform’s current rules for eligibility, geographic availability, advertising, and viewing rights; the labels alone do not establish those terms.
Monetization on YouTube
YouTube is one platform-specific example, not a universal VOD rule. YouTube says eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program can earn from ads before, during, after, and around Watch Page videos, and from YouTube Premium subscribers who watch on the Watch Page. Monetization of long-form or live Watch Page videos requires acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module, and ad suitability and platform review apply. Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks are addressed separately under the Commerce Product Module. See YouTube’s current monetization guidance and confirm the terms that apply to your account and region.

How on-demand video reaches a viewer
At platform scale, a VOD service may ingest a high-quality source file, store it, transcode it into multiple formats for playback, distribute those versions through a content delivery network (CDN), and play them in video applications. This backend pipeline supports delivery across devices and network conditions; a creator publishing through a hosted platform generally does not need to operate that infrastructure personally. Google Cloud outlines these VOD workflow stages.
Companies may also use “VOD” narrowly for internal catalog or delivery workflows. For example, Amazon Video Central uses it in the context of movies, episodic television, and related material for Prime Video. That operational usage does not replace the broader viewer-facing meaning: choosing video to watch when convenient.

Choosing a model for your audience
No single payment model is best for every creator. Compare the practical terms rather than assuming a label tells the whole story.
- Payment: Is access supported by ads, a recurring fee, a per-title purchase or rental, a premium charge, or a mix?
- Viewing mode: Can viewers choose a specific title, or are they watching a scheduled channel?
- Ad experience: Are ads present, and does a paid tier still include them?
- Access rights: What do the service’s terms say about rental periods, purchases, subscriptions, and where viewers can watch?
- Eligibility and reach: What platform requirements, regional limits, and review rules apply to the creator and the audience?
