How to Configure FFmpeg Audio Bitrate for a 24/7 Devotional YouTube Stream

For stereo devotional audio on YouTube Live, use FFmpeg AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Learn the exact options, when 5.1 differs, and what to monitor on a 24/7 stream.

For a normal stereo devotional livestream, encode audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. In FFmpeg, set this with -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100. The devotional content and 24/7 duration do not call for a different bitrate; choose settings for the actual audio channel layout and YouTube’s live-ingest guidance.

Recommended FFmpeg settings for stereo

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends AAC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. For a compatible MP4 input and an RTMP or RTMPS destination, the audio options can be used like this:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -c:v copy
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace input.mp4 and the destination with your actual source file and the ingest URL supplied by YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live streaming. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide current ingest guidance.

What the audio options do

  • -c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s native AAC audio encoder.
  • -b:a 128k sets audio bitrate to 128 kilobits per second. FFmpeg documents bitrate in bits per second; for its native AAC encoder, specifying this bitrate activates constant bitrate (CBR) mode.
  • -ar 44100 sets the audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz.

Place output options after the input they configure and before the output URL. The command’s -c:v copy is conditional: use it only if the source video codec and container path are compatible with the chosen output. It copies video without re-encoding and does not change the audio settings. Other input types, including generated still-image streams, may need different video options.

Choose settings for the actual channel layout

Audio layout YouTube live recommendation When to use it
Stereo AAC, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz Normal two-channel program audio.
5.1 surround AAC, 384 kbps, 48 kHz Only when the source mix and channel layout are genuinely 5.1. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies AAC for 5.1.
Mono or another layout No separate recommendation stated on the cited live settings page. Confirm the intended channel layout and inspect the encoded output; do not assume the stereo recommendation applies unchanged.

The 5.1 figures are not a higher-quality setting to apply to an ordinary stereo stream. Match the encoder configuration to the program’s real channel layout. YouTube also lists MP3 as a supported live audio codec, but AAC is the straightforward choice for the stereo and 5.1 settings above. Check YouTube’s live settings before changing a production stream, since current options can vary.

What 24/7 operation changes—and what it does not

A continuous schedule does not itself require a higher or lower audio bitrate. The 128 kbps stereo recommendation remains the applicable starting point; reliability depends on more than that number. YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom for the total stream bitrate and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth room; treat that as guidance, not a reliability guarantee. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips cover encoding and operational considerations.

  • Test a representative stream before relying on it continuously.
  • Watch Live Control Room stream health and verify that audio remains present and correctly routed when the source or playlist changes.
  • Keep network capacity in reserve for the combined audio and video bitrate, rather than calculating headroom from audio alone.
  • Plan for source interruptions, network failures, and process restarts separately. A bitrate setting cannot prevent those problems, and YouTube’s published live recommendations do not prescribe one universal FFmpeg supervisor or backup-input design.

Check the FFmpeg encoder you are using

The example uses FFmpeg’s native aac encoder and does not assume an optional encoder such as libfdk_aac is installed. The native encoder’s documented default is 128 kbps when no bitrate is specified, but explicitly including -b:a 128k makes the intended setting visible and easier to audit. Encoder behavior is implementation-specific; if you select another encoder, first check that it is available in your FFmpeg build and consult its own options. FFmpeg’s AAC encoder documentation describes the native encoder’s bitrate behavior.

Troubleshoot common audio problems

The stream has no audio

  • Confirm the input actually contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg is mapping it to the output.
  • Check the output command for -c:a aac and ensure the audio options occur after the input and before the destination.
  • Play or inspect a short test output and check the audio meter in Live Control Room before starting a long run.

The sound is distorted, too quiet, or inconsistent

  • Confirm the source mix is not already clipping or unusually quiet; bitrate selection cannot repair a poor source mix.
  • Check that the input’s channel layout is what you intend to send. Do not configure 5.1 settings for a stereo mix.
  • Monitor a representative test and verify the audio remains correctly routed across source changes.

YouTube reports stream-health or connection problems

  • Check total stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth, leaving the recommended 20% room.
  • Review the Live Control Room stream-health diagnostics and test the connection and source independently.
  • Do not treat a change to audio bitrate as a fix for a failing network, interrupted source, or stopped FFmpeg process.
