To resume a 24/7 bhajan stream after OBS crashes, you need two separate recovery steps: YouTube must accept the encoder’s returning signal, and OBS—or a host-side supervisor—must start sending that signal again. YouTube’s Auto-start setting can handle the first part; it does not relaunch OBS. If you want to avoid keeping a computer running, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is a different option for looping uploaded videos on YouTube.
What happens when OBS crashes?
OBS is the encoder sending your video and audio to YouTube. If its process exits, the feed stops. YouTube cannot restart that process: the computer, a separate process supervisor, or a person must bring OBS back. Afterward, OBS must load the right scene and sources and reconnect with a valid stream key before YouTube can receive the stream again.
YouTube describes Auto-start as a way to start streaming from the encoder. It changes YouTube’s response when an encoder begins sending; it is not an OBS watchdog. Auto-stop similarly affects whether streaming stops from the encoder. Configure these settings for the intended workflow, but do not treat either as crash recovery. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Set up YouTube and OBS to reconnect
Check the stream key and server URL
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the intended stream configuration.
- Copy the stream key and server URL shown for that configuration into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube calls stream keys the stream’s “password and address”; keep the key private.
- If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the old value in OBS as well. A stale key can prevent the returning encoder from connecting.
YouTube offers reusable keys through custom stream key settings. Its encoder setup instructions explain where to enter the key and server URL: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. If OBS reports a startup error after a key change, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is to replace the key in the encoder: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Enable the YouTube behavior you want
In the stream’s Live Control Room settings, enable Auto-start if you want YouTube to begin the broadcast when OBS starts sending. Set Auto-stop according to whether you want YouTube to stop the broadcast when the encoder stops. These settings govern YouTube’s reaction to encoder signals; they do not relaunch OBS or guarantee that a particular live event stays available through every interruption. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Make OBS start again after it exits
Configure a host-side supervisor, operating-system task or service to relaunch OBS when its process exits, or arrange for an operator to restart it. The precise setup depends on whether the host uses Windows, macOS or Linux, and on the installed OBS version. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a specific OBS watchdog recipe, so use instructions for your own operating system and version rather than assuming one setting applies everywhere.

A process restart alone is not proof of recovery. Check that OBS opens the correct profile and scene, that the video and audio sources are active, and that the encoder connects using the current key. Also decide what should happen after a full host reboot or power loss, not just an OBS process crash. Any supervisor must be configured for those cases if they are part of your recovery plan.
Test the complete recovery path
- Schedule a controlled test using an unlisted stream or another suitable private test arrangement. Confirm that OBS sends a preview and that the stream reaches its expected live state.
- During a planned test window, stop or terminate the OBS process in the way you intend to recover from. Confirm that the host-side mechanism starts OBS again without an unintended manual confirmation.
- Watch both Live Control Room and the viewer-facing watch page. Check that the returning video and audio are correct and that YouTube receives the new encoder signal.
- Test a separate network interruption if network resilience is part of the plan. YouTube describes failover testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable; those tests assess a different failure from an OBS process crash.
- Test event endings and archive expectations separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that note does not establish the archive behavior for a longer, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, monitoring stream health and testing backup-encoder failover. Its instructions are at YouTube live streaming tips and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Keep enough upload bandwidth for the stream
YouTube recommends 20% additional upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s needs. That headroom can help with network-related interruptions, but it cannot recover an OBS process that is no longer running. YouTube also notes that connectivity interruptions may break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
- OBS did not reopen: The crash-restart layer is missing, misconfigured or unable to run in the current host state. Check the relevant supervisor or operating-system task, including what it does after a reboot.
- OBS reopened, but YouTube receives no signal: Check OBS’s streaming connection, the server URL and the current key. If you reset the key, update OBS; YouTube recommends replacing the encoder key when a third-party encoder reports a startup error.
- YouTube receives a signal but the wrong picture or no sound appears: Check that the intended OBS profile and scene opened and that their video, audio and playback sources are available.
- The stream appears in Live Control Room but not as expected to viewers: Check the event’s live state and watch page, rather than relying on OBS’s local status alone. Auto-start only sets YouTube’s response to incoming encoder signals; it does not certify a successful recovery.
- The interruption followed a network problem: Check the connection and available upload bandwidth against YouTube’s recommendation. Network headroom does not replace process supervision.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the bhajan stream is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a local computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
