Yes—a Raspberry Pi 4 can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, and it may be cheaper if you already own the Pi, have stable broadband with enough upload capacity, and can manage a Linux setup. But the available figures do not establish that buying a Pi 4 for the job is cheaper in India: there is no verified current Pi 4 parts total or measured Pi 4 electricity cost to compare. The lowest-risk approach is to prepare a YouTube-compatible file on another computer and stream-copy it on the Pi rather than re-encode it there.

What the Raspberry Pi 4 can do

A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B can act as a small encoder that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. A documented Pi 4 project demonstrates YouTube RTMP streaming, and Pi-specific guidance describes looping a compatible file with FFmpeg in stream-copy mode. These examples establish a workable approach, not guaranteed performance across every Pi 4 configuration or a controlled 24/7 benchmark. The Pi 4 project and the Pi looping guide are useful starting points.

The Pi can read and forward a prepared file; it does not need to decode, resize, filter and encode the video if the source already meets YouTube’s ingest requirements. Stream copy does not fix an incompatible file, so validate the video and audio before leaving the system unattended.

When it is cheaper in India—and when the answer is unknown

If you already have the Pi 4 and can use your existing internet connection, the comparison is mainly marginal power, broadband or data limits, reliability, and the time you spend configuring and maintaining the setup. Buying a new board and accessories changes the calculation. No current India bill of materials or measured Pi 4 power draw is established here, so a definitive Pi 4-versus-service savings figure would be guesswork.

A StreamNeo cost comparison published 3 July 2026 gives provider-authored estimates of ₹100–₹150 per month in running costs and ₹8,000 upfront for a Raspberry Pi setup, but its text identifies the example as a Raspberry Pi 5—not a Pi 4. Treat these as that provider’s Pi 5 estimates, not verified Pi 4 costs. The same comparison estimates a DIY VPS at ₹300–₹800 per month and a managed service at ₹999 per month; these are also provider-published figures, not independent measurements. See StreamNeo’s cost comparison.

A separate StreamNeo India comparison published 26 July 2026 lists its own managed monthly plan at ₹999. It estimates that a desktop drawing 120–200 W at a marginal electricity cost of ₹7–₹8 per kWh would use ₹605–₹1,152 of electricity over 30 days. That is a worked desktop example, not a Pi 4 measurement. It also estimates that a 4.5 Mbps stream sends about 2 GB per hour and roughly 1.4 TB in 30 days; actual data use depends on bitrate and runtime. Read the India comparison.

Option What is established Costs and trade-offs to check
Existing Pi 4 at home A prepared compatible loop using stream copy is plausible; no Pi 4 India total cost is verified. Marginal power, broadband upload and data allowance, reliability, setup and maintenance.
New Pi 4 setup Current India parts prices and measured Pi 4 power remain unestablished. Board and supporting parts, power, storage, cooling, recovery, and how long the hardware will be used.
VPS running FFmpeg A Linux host can run headless FFmpeg in copy mode; cited projects describe small Linux systems and recovery handling. Compute and transfer charges, region-specific taxes or extras, technical setup, monitoring, and maintenance.
Managed loop service StreamNeo publishes a provider-authored India monthly figure of ₹999 for its service. Recurring fee, service terms, file and storage limits, support, recovery, and reliance on a provider.

For a fair comparison, use the same period and include hardware bought for the project, power, broadband or data charges, setup time, and any VPS or managed-service fees. Your tariff, ISP fair-use policy, stream bitrate, outages, and value of maintenance time can change the result. A VPS may have a lower invoice but still requires you to arrange updates, monitoring, transfer capacity, and recovery.

Prepare the video and YouTube Live settings

Choose a compatible source before using stream copy

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 frames per second. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. The Pi loop example uses a compatible file, copies its video stream, supplies AAC audio, and packages the feed for RTMP. Confirm your actual file’s codecs and container against the ingest path you choose; a copy command cannot convert an unsupported codec or repair a damaged file. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance provide the authoritative requirements.

Set bitrate to match the source and the upload connection

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a household connection can sustain the selected upload continuously. Check upload speed at busy and quiet times, then choose a bitrate below dependable capacity with room for other household traffic. A download-speed result alone does not show whether your upload will hold.

For context only, India’s NIC webcast guidance says its agency-fed setup needs outbound RTMP port 1935 and 2–4 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth per stream. That figure is for NIC’s webcast service, not a YouTube-specific standard; follow YouTube’s settings for YouTube ingest. NIC’s webcast guidance supplies that separate context.

Keep keyframes and the stream test in view

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Before committing to a long-running loop, test the actual feed with audio and video movement similar to what viewers will receive. YouTube Help states: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Check YouTube Studio’s stream-health status during the test, including after you change the key, encoder settings, or source.

Set up a Pi 4 loop with FFmpeg

Use a prepared file and treat the following as an illustrative pattern, not a universal command: the source path, stream-key handling, audio choice, and server endpoint must match your setup. The Pi-specific guide discusses -re -stream_loop -1, -c:v copy, AAC audio, and FLV output for a YouTube RTMP endpoint. If the file is not compatible, prepare or convert it on another computer first rather than assuming stream copy will make it acceptable.

  1. Prepare and verify the source file. Check that it plays from start to finish, contains the intended audio, and loops cleanly. Confirm that its codecs and settings are suitable for the YouTube ingest mode you plan to use.
  2. Install and test FFmpeg on the Pi. Confirm that FFmpeg can read the file from its final storage location and run a short test to YouTube before scheduling a continuous stream.
  3. Build the loop command for your source. Follow the Pi guide’s pattern of reading in real time, looping indefinitely, copying compatible video, encoding or supplying AAC audio as appropriate, and sending an FLV stream to the RTMP endpoint. Do not paste a guessed endpoint or expose your stream key in a public script or log.
  4. Run a live test and inspect Studio. Check picture, sound, loop seam, stream health, and whether the Pi and network remain stable under the chosen bitrate.
  5. Automate only after the test succeeds. A systemd service can start the process at boot and restart a failed process. Test a full reboot and an intentional reconnect before relying on unattended operation; a restart policy will not correct a bad key, missing file, corrupt system, or invalid settings.

Make an unattended setup more reliable

  • Upload headroom: Keep the stream below reliable upload capacity and account for household traffic. Recheck at different times rather than relying on one speed test.
  • Thermals: Keep airflow clear and monitor temperature and throttling on a long run. A short successful preview does not establish 24/7 stability.
  • Storage: Keep a backup of the source and configuration. Logs, temporary files, and repeated writes can wear or corrupt storage; have a tested replacement plan.
  • Power and outages: Use a stable power supply. A UPS can help with some power interruptions, but it cannot resolve an internet outage.
  • Recovery and credentials: Protect the stream key like a password. Test service startup, failure recovery, and reconnect behavior; repeated restarts cannot repair a bad key or invalid source.

Copyright and YouTube’s live-stream rules still apply to prerecorded material. Use footage and music you have rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current guidance before broadcasting. A continuous loop does not make copyrighted or otherwise ineligible material permissible.
