There is no universally best preset: the right trade-off depends on your source, encoder, hardware, and priorities. Before encoding anything, see whether you can join compatible clips without re-encoding.
Choose a preset and quality target separately
FFmpeg presets control encoding speed; they do not, by themselves, set your desired image quality. For libx264, veryfast is a practical speed-first starting point. If you can spend more time encoding for a different quality or file-size result, compare it with fast or medium on the same representative material. Preset names and available options can vary by encoder, so use the options documented for the encoder you actually select. See the FFmpeg codec documentation.
CRF is a separate constant-quality control for supported encoders. Choose a CRF by inspecting the output from your own footage; there is no one value established here as right for every playlist. A useful short test includes the kinds of scenes that are hardest to encode in your material, such as fast movement, fine detail, or gradients.
Speed-first sample command
For a single input that needs re-encoding with x264, a basic starting point is:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf YOUR_CRF -c:a aac -b:a 192k sample.mp4
Replace YOUR_CRF with a value you have chosen and checked on your own footage. This example is a starting point, not a universal prescription: confirm that the input’s dimensions, frame rate, audio, and intended output are appropriate before using it for a full encode. Compare samples made with veryfast, fast, or medium while holding other settings constant. Judge encode time, visible quality, and file size together; do not assume a slower preset will always produce a result that matters more for your use.
Check whether you can avoid encoding the playlist
If your goal is to join clips, encoding every frame again may be unnecessary. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding when their streams and formats permit it. The concat filter is the documented route when filtering or incompatible streams mean the output must be re-encoded. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the approaches and says of the filter workflow: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
Create a text file such as files.txt with one entry per clip:
file 'part1.mp4'
file 'part2.mp4'
file 'part3.mp4'
Then try a stream-copy join:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i files.txt -c copy playlist.mp4
This copies the existing streams rather than encoding them again. It works only when the inputs are compatible for concatenation; if FFmpeg reports mismatched stream properties or the result is not usable, use an appropriate re-encoding workflow instead. The command does not make incompatible clips compatible merely by listing them together.

Use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed
When input streams need filtering or do not meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements, use the concat filter and encode the resulting output. The inputs and filter need to be configured for the streams being joined, so there is no reliable one-line filter command for every playlist. Follow FFmpeg’s concat guidance for the filter workflow, then select an encoder, preset, and quality target for the output.
Match the output to YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube’s upload recommendations include MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, stereo or supported multichannel audio, and a 48 kHz sample rate. YouTube recommends matching the recorded frame rate. Its help page does not state a publication year for the bitrate recommendations below, so treat these as YouTube’s listed recommendations, not mandatory settings or a guarantee of a particular result. Consult YouTube’s video format and bitrate recommendations for current details.

These bitrate figures are recommendations, not a requirement that every upload use those rates. They also do not replace the CRF sample check: decide on your encode settings based on the material and output you need, then confirm the exported file plays correctly before uploading.

Reduce wasted time on a large encode
- Test a representative short section before committing to the full playlist; compare speed, visible quality, and output size.
- Check compatibility for a stream-copy concat first. If it works for the inputs, it avoids re-encoding entirely.
- For clips that must be re-encoded, choose
veryfastwhen completion time is the priority, then compare slower presets only if the sample’s quality or size justifies the extra encode time. - Keep the intended output resolution and frame rate in view when evaluating the result, because YouTube lists different bitrate recommendations for different output classes.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
The encode is still taking too long
First confirm that re-encoding is actually necessary. If compatible inputs can be joined with the concat demuxer, use stream copy rather than encoding the entire playlist. If re-encoding is required and speed is the priority, try veryfast and make a short sample before running the complete job.
The output looks worse than expected
Preset is a speed setting, not the quality target. Recheck the CRF on a representative section and compare a sample at another CRF; inspect difficult scenes rather than judging only a static frame. Also check that output resolution and frame rate match your intent.
The concat demuxer rejects clips or the joined file is wrong
The inputs may not have compatible streams or formats for stream-copy concatenation. In that case, use the concat filter workflow and re-encode as needed instead of assuming -c copy can reconcile differences.

The upload does not match the intended format
Check the exported container, video and audio codecs, sample rate, and frame rate against YouTube’s current recommendations. For SDR bitrate context, use the resolution and frame-rate class in YouTube’s table rather than applying a single number to every video.
