What “cheaper” means for a home-PC stream
Separate the software’s purchase price from the cost of keeping a stream running. The cited official pages establish OBS Studio’s GNU GPL v2 or later license and describe FFmpeg’s command-line multimedia capabilities, but do not establish a paid software price for either in this comparison. A software price alone would not settle which costs less to operate.
- PC and upgrades: Use the computer you have, but account for any upgrade needed to handle your chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene workload.
- Electricity: Multiply the PC’s actual power draw by your streaming hours and your electricity tariff. The cited sources do not provide an apples-to-apples OBS-versus-FFmpeg power test.
- Internet: Check your plan’s upload capacity and any data or fair-use limits. A stream’s bitrate is not a broadband price.
- Your time: OBS may take less setup time for someone who wants a visual interface and scenes; FFmpeg may be a better fit for someone comfortable building a repeatable command-line pipeline. That is a workflow inference, not a measured universal result.

For a scene-based stream where visual controls matter, OBS is often the more approachable starting point. For an automated, repeatable pipeline and a user already comfortable with command-line configuration, FFmpeg may be more convenient. Neither preference demonstrates lower electricity use or total cost.

Set a fair YouTube test before comparing
Keep the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate the same in both tools. Otherwise, you are comparing different workloads rather than OBS and FFmpeg. YouTube advises matching stream quality to the internet connection, testing upload bitrate, and checking stream health with audio and movement similar to the intended content. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). YouTube encoder settings

RTMPS and stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP sent through an SSL connection. Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live-streaming setup, and keep the key private. Google for Developers: RTMPS
Estimate your own India cost
- List what you already pay: Note your PC and broadband plan. Include only upgrades or service charges you would actually incur for this stream.
- Measure the workload: Use the same content, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and scene complexity in each tool. Test with movement and audio like the intended stream.
- Check upload stability: Test the connection at the time you expect to stream and monitor YouTube stream health. A nominal broadband speed is not proof of stable upload capacity.
- Calculate electricity: If you have a power meter, record the PC’s draw while streaming, then multiply kilowatts by hours and your local per-kWh tariff. Without a measurement, treat the result as an estimate rather than a tool comparison.
- Include duration and data rules: Multiply the actual streaming hours by your recurring schedule; check your ISP’s plan terms for data caps or throttling. Do not convert bitrate directly into rupees without the plan’s billing rules.
- Include setup and maintenance time: Account for configuring scenes or commands, monitoring the stream, and recovering from failures. The value of that time is personal, not an established benchmark.
Which should you choose?
- Choose OBS first if you want an application interface for assembling and controlling a scene-based stream.
- Choose FFmpeg first if you are comfortable with command-line inputs and outputs and want a configurable, repeatable workflow.
- Choose by measured cost, not assumption if electricity or PC load is decisive: test both on the same machine and settings. The available documentation does not show that one inherently draws less power.
