Check it in three places: the encoder, YouTube Live Control Room, and the viewer-facing watch page. An encoder’s “streaming” indicator only shows that it is sending; it does not prove YouTube has started the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, select the event, start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, and then click Go live. Finally, open the event’s watch page and confirm the video and audio are playing.
What counts as actually broadcasting?
A video-file stream can be in three different states:
- The encoder is sending. Your encoder is trying to send the file to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key.
- YouTube is receiving the feed. Live Control Room shows an incoming preview and stream health or status information.
- The event is live for viewers. YouTube’s workflow requires you to click Go live after the preview appears; the watch page then lets you check viewer access and playback.
Do not treat the first state as proof of the third. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow puts the separate Go live action after the preview appears. YouTube’s encoder-streaming instructions describe that sequence.
Verify the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open the event. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live, then select the stream you intend to use.
- Check the encoder’s source and destination. Make sure the intended video file is loaded and that the encoder is sending to the YouTube server URL with the stream key associated with this event. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as functioning like a password and address.
- Look for YouTube’s incoming preview. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the video preview. Check the stream health and status area for errors or instructions. If there is no preview, the encoder indicator alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
- Start the broadcast in YouTube. Once the preview appears, click Go live, following the sequence in YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Test the viewer-facing event. Open the event’s watch page and, if useful, your channel page. Confirm that the video plays and that its audio is audible. Keep the preview and stream health visible while the file runs.
YouTube’s help pages may show different interface details depending on the account or configuration, but the essential check is the same: confirm YouTube’s preview, start the event, then verify playback from the watch page.

If the preview or watch page does not look right
Encoder says it is streaming, but there is no preview
- Confirm that Live Control Room has the correct event selected.
- Check the server URL and stream key in the encoder. A key for a different event will not send to the selected event as intended.
- Read the status or error message in Live Control Room; it can provide platform-side diagnostic guidance.
- For relevant encoder-start errors, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises getting a new stream key and updating the encoder.
There is a preview, but viewers do not see a live event
Check whether you clicked Go live after the preview appeared. Then test the event’s watch page directly. Also check the event’s privacy setting: YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted streams, so an event can be working without being publicly discoverable. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for its guidance on checking the preview and event.
The event is live, but the file looks frozen or silent
Watch the preview and watch page rather than relying on a live badge. Check that the intended file is playing at the encoder and that the audio track is enabled and audible. A useful test should include the same picture and sound conditions as the planned broadcast; a static frame or silent passage can otherwise resemble a playback problem.

Encoder settings to check only when diagnosing a feed
If YouTube does not receive or properly display the feed, compare the encoder with YouTube’s current live encoder settings. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds.
For H.264, YouTube’s current bitrate table gives these values. They are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that an internet connection can sustain the stream.

| H.264 video mode | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Check that page for current supported settings before changing an encoder; do not increase bitrate blindly if the sending connection cannot sustain it.
Do you need extra equipment?
No special physical accessory is needed to verify a stream sent from a video file. The checks happen in the encoder and YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say expensive equipment is not required.
