Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when their streams match and you want to preserve the encoded packets; use the concat filter and re-encode when you need to normalize differences or apply filters. Then send the output to the YouTube Live ingest URL with a private stream key, using settings that match YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
There are two different concat approaches, and they solve different problems. The concat demuxer is suited to compatible files when you want to avoid a re-encode. The concat filter is for cases where re-encoding is needed, such as when inputs need normalization or filtering. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains this distinction.

Before choosing, inspect the files and compare their video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates and audio configurations. Differences in these properties are warning signs for stream-copy concat. Do not assume that a playlist of unrelated files can be joined cleanly without encoding. Even compatible settings do not guarantee seamless transitions, so test the complete playlist.
Prepare the playlist and output
For compatible files: concat demuxer
Use the concat demuxer for the no-re-encode path only after confirming that the inputs are suitable. The demuxer reads a sequence of files as one input; stream copy then passes the encoded packets through without decoding or encoding. Consult the documentation for the FFmpeg build installed on your system for its exact playlist syntax and path-handling behavior. The FFmpeg FAQ describes the method, but does not establish one universal playlist command for every setup.

Do not work around playlist or path errors by disabling safety checks without first understanding the security implications and verifying the option for your installed version. Keep file paths and playlist files under your control.
For mixed files or changes: concat filter
Use the concat filter when the clips need to be brought to a consistent output or you need to apply filters. Decide the target dimensions, frame rate, video codec and audio configuration first, then encode the filtered output. Encoding adds CPU or GPU work and can introduce generation loss; choose settings that preserve the quality you need while matching YouTube’s ingest guidance. Test transitions and audio continuity on the actual set of clips rather than assuming the output will be seamless.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers managing these values.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a credential. Do not put a real key in a public command, tutorial, screenshot or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Set FFmpeg’s destination. Use the ingest URL and key in the encoder’s output settings. Avoid publishing commands containing credentials; use a private environment or configuration mechanism appropriate to your system.
- Choose an ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as streaming over an encrypted connection; see its protocol documentation.
- Match the output to YouTube’s current settings. Select codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate from YouTube’s encoder settings. The correct bitrate depends on the encoded output, not just the source files.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Audio suitability depends on the actual output and protocol, so check the current table rather than assuming the listed options are interchangeable.
Use a bitrate that matches the encoded stream
The following H.264 ingest values are YouTube-published minimum and recommended bitrates in its guidance checked in 2026. They are platform recommendations, not results of an independent performance study. Choose the row for the output you actually encode; YouTube’s page includes more combinations for other resolutions and codecs.

These figures describe the video ingest bitrate for the listed H.264 outputs. They do not mean every source needs to be encoded at those settings, or that a network connection at exactly that rate will be reliable. The bitrate you send must fit your available upload capacity with headroom.
Rehearse and monitor the stream
- Test the full workflow before going public, including representative motion and audio. A static or silent test may not expose the problems that occur in the real playlist.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and review its messages during the event.
- Test available upload throughput and use a reliable network connection. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. That is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that any connection will be stable.
- Verify that the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval and bitrate describe the output FFmpeg is actually sending.
Troubleshoot common failures
The concat input fails or clips do not join as expected
Likely cause: the files have different codecs, stream layouts, time bases, dimensions, frame rates or audio configurations. Inspect the inputs and switch to a concat-filter workflow with re-encoding and normalization where necessary. Test transitions on the actual playlist.

The stream connects but YouTube reports poor stream health
Likely cause: the encoded output settings do not match YouTube’s guidance, or the upload connection is constrained or unstable. Match the bitrate row to the output codec, resolution and frame rate, test upload capacity, leave headroom and review YouTube’s messages.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that you selected the intended live stream and copied its current stream URL and key correctly. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.

Audio or motion problems appear during playback
Rehearse with representative audio and movement, then inspect the encoded output and stream-health messages. Confirm that the chosen audio settings work for the output and protocol rather than assuming that every listed audio format is suitable.
