Can a Refurbished Dell OptiPlex Run a Low-Cost 24/7 YouTube Stream in India?

A refurbished OptiPlex can be a low-cost YouTube streaming host—but only if the exact unit passes a sustained OBS test and your power and upload connection are dependable.

Yes, conditionally. A refurbished Dell OptiPlex can run a simple, fixed-scene or lightly animated YouTube stream if that exact unit can encode your chosen output continuously, your internet connection has stable upload capacity, and local power is reliable or backed up. The OptiPlex name alone does not establish whether a particular machine is suitable: test the actual configuration with your intended video and audio before relying on it.

What determines whether an OptiPlex is suitable?

Streaming with OBS uses the computer to render the scene and encode the outgoing video. A static image or low-motion loop with modest overlays is a lighter workload than gameplay or a scene with multiple animated sources, but that is a practical workload distinction—not a performance result for any particular OptiPlex. OBS documents encoding overload and rendering lag as distinct performance problems: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

Before buying, get the exact specifications and assess the condition of the unit. No model-specific benchmark or sustained-use certification establishes that every refurbished OptiPlex can stream 24/7.

  • Processor and graphics: Confirm the CPU generation and whether its integrated graphics or other available encoder supports the OBS encoder you plan to use. Do not assume that two OptiPlex systems with similar names have equivalent encoding capability.
  • Memory and storage: Check installed RAM, SSD health, and whether the operating system and OBS work reliably. Include any needed replacement parts in the cost.
  • Thermal and physical condition: Check cooling, noise, and sustained operation under the intended load. A machine that launches a stream successfully for a few minutes has not demonstrated long-run stability.
  • Purchase protection: Verify the seller’s return window and warranty, and make sure the listing identifies the actual processor and configuration.
  • Operating system: Confirm that it can run your chosen OBS version and configure it not to sleep or restart unattended in a way that interrupts transmission.

Set a modest YouTube output and test it on the actual machine

Start with a conservative output that matches the OptiPlex’s encoder and your internet connection. YouTube says to choose a quality that will produce a reliable stream for the available connection. Its current live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; the listed minimums for those modes are 4 Mbps and 2 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube ingestion rates, not a guarantee that an internet plan will deliver stable upload at that speed. Leave headroom for real-world variation, and choose the lower mode if your upload fluctuates. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS protocol. In the encoder settings, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Set these options in OBS according to the encoder you selected and check YouTube’s current guidance for the stream format you intend to use.

  1. Prepare the channel: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder and retrieve its stream key and server settings. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. Configure OBS: Add the real scene sources and audio you will use. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube and connect the account or enter the key as appropriate. In Settings > Output, choose the intended encoder, set rate control to CBR, and use a bitrate suitable for your output mode and connection. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to test. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds if the encoder exposes that option.
  3. Run a representative test: Stream the same kind of moving content and audio planned for the real broadcast. Watch OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics, and check YouTube’s stream health rather than treating a successful launch as proof of reliability.
  4. Test recovery and unattended behavior: Check what happens after a network interruption, OBS failure, or planned restart. Disable sleep if appropriate, and configure operating-system updates and any restart or monitoring method so they do not create unattended outages.
  5. Repeat under realistic conditions: A short test can find obvious faults; it does not establish 24/7 reliability. Run a longer test and monitor the computer, connection, OBS, and YouTube health through the conditions in which you expect to operate.

YouTube recommends testing representative content and monitoring stream health. Its guidance on encoder workflow is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan for stream sessions, disconnections, and power cuts

“24/7” needs an operating plan, not just a computer left running. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive rule, not a promise that one session will stay live indefinitely. Plan how you will end and restart or schedule sessions, handle reconnects, and notice if broadcasting stops.

For a local setup, use Ethernet between the OptiPlex and router where practical. It can improve the local link, but it cannot fix an ISP’s weak upload capacity or an upstream outage. No provider or locality-specific upload recommendation is established here, so check the stability of your own connection at the times you intend to stream.

A UPS helps only for the runtime its battery can support. The desktop and the router—and the modem or other equipment needed for internet access—must all receive backup power. Size the UPS for those loads and the hold-up time you want; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Dell’s India power guidance notes a 220–240 V supply, but does not provide an OptiPlex streaming-power figure or an uptime guarantee: Dell India power troubleshooting.

Calculate the real cost instead of guessing

The price of the refurbished desktop is only one part of the cost. Include any RAM or SSD replacement, UPS, networking equipment, electricity, broadband, and the time or software needed to supervise and recover a failed stream. No reliable refurbished-market price or OptiPlex-specific wall-power measurement is established here, so a model name cannot tell you the monthly energy bill.

  1. Measure the complete running setup at the wall after it reaches steady state. Include the desktop and any networking or backup equipment whose consumption you want to count.
  2. Calculate monthly energy: average wall power (W) Ă— 24 Ă— 30 Ă· 1,000 = monthly kWh.
  3. Estimate the energy charge: monthly kWh × your applicable marginal tariff (₹/kWh). Use your actual electricity bill or current local DISCOM schedule.
  4. Allow for fixed charges, taxes, duties, fuel adjustments, and slab changes where they apply; the simple multiplication estimates energy charges, not necessarily the full bill.

India does not have a single household electricity rate that applies to every state, utility, and slab. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff-and-duty reference lists state- and utility-specific values with different effective dates. For example, Lakshadweep’s Department of Electricity lists ₹3.55/kWh for the first 100 units and ₹5.30/kWh for units 101–200 in its normal domestic schedule for FY 2026–27; these local figures must not be generalized to India: Lakshadweep electricity tariff schedule.

Choose between a local OptiPlex and cloud operation

A local OptiPlex gives you control over OBS scenes and avoids relying on a third-party cloud encoder, but it depends on your machine, local electricity, broadband, and a plan for monitoring and recovery. A cloud service can remove the need to keep a home computer running, but evaluate its recurring cost and whether its capabilities fit your content and channel. The choice depends on how much you value local control versus reducing home equipment and recovery responsibilities.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS reports encoding overload: The chosen encoder or settings may exceed what the exact CPU or graphics encoder can sustain. Reduce resolution or frame rate, use a less demanding scene, or choose an encoder the hardware supports; then test again while watching OBS statistics.
  • Rendering lag appears: Scene composition can overload rendering even when encoding itself is not the issue. Simplify sources or effects and recheck OBS’s rendering statistics.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check whether actual upload capacity is stable at the selected bitrate. Reduce output bitrate or switch from 1080p30 to 720p30 if the connection varies, and test again with headroom.
  • The stream stops after an internet or power interruption: Check that the router, modem, and desktop stayed powered, then verify OBS and YouTube’s session state and reconnect behavior. Configure monitoring and a recovery procedure rather than assuming a UPS or automatic reconnect will keep every session alive.
  • The stream ends around a session boundary: Plan session duration and restart or scheduling steps around YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive threshold; do not assume a single stream is guaranteed to continue forever.
  • The PC restarts or sleeps unattended: Review sleep and update settings, as well as any restart automation. Confirm changes with another representative test so a maintenance setting does not silently stop transmission.

Protect the channel’s copyright and monetization eligibility

Technical stability does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in a loop. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and verify that the licence covers live broadcasting and any planned monetization. YouTube’s copyright, reused-content, and monetization rules are separate from whether OBS can successfully send a signal; review the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and material before broadcasting.
