Measure each device’s power draw at the wall while it runs the stream you intend to use, then multiply its energy use by your household’s applicable electricity rate. Every continuous watt uses 8.76 kWh in a 365-day year.
Calculate the electricity cost from your own measurements
Use the device’s measured average power draw during the intended stream—not the rating printed on its power adapter. For a steady load:
- Daily energy use in kWh = watts × 24 ÷ 1,000.
- Annual energy use in kWh = watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000, or watts × 8.76.
- Estimated energy charge = kWh × your applicable marginal rate in ₹/kWh.
For example, if a meter shows an average draw of 10 W, the device uses 0.24 kWh a day and 87.6 kWh in a 365-day year. Multiply those figures by the rate that applies to your household to estimate the energy charge. This is a mathematical example, not a claim about typical Pi or laptop consumption.
Your effective rate depends on your state, distribution utility, consumption slab and bill components. The Central Electricity Authority publishes an electricity tariff and duty compilation, but your own bill is the practical reference for your marginal rate. The calculation above estimates energy charges only; it does not add fixed charges, duties or other bill components.

How to measure a Raspberry Pi and laptop fairly
- Connect a plug-in energy meter between the wall outlet and the device’s power supply.
- Set up the full system you plan to leave running: the Pi or laptop, network connection, storage, cooling, display state and any peripherals.
- Run the intended stream for a representative period. Record the meter’s average watts or accumulated kWh.
- Repeat the measurement for the other device with the same video, resolution, frame rate, network conditions and peripherals where possible.
- Use each measured result in the formulas above and apply your household’s applicable rate.
Keep the comparison tied to what you actually plan to run. A laptop’s consumption can vary with its model, battery and charging behavior, display state, software-encoding load and connected devices. A meter reading that includes the real setup captures those differences better than a generic watt estimate.
What Raspberry Pi’s published figures do—and do not—tell you
Raspberry Pi documentation lists 800 mA as typical bare-board active current for Raspberry Pi 5 and recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply. The 27 W value is the supply’s recommended rating, not the board’s typical operating draw or the whole system’s wall consumption. Peripherals and other attached hardware add to system use. Raspberry Pi notes that “The current consumed by each Raspberry Pi depends on the peripherals connected.” See the Raspberry Pi power-supply documentation.

The same documentation’s approximate workload table covers earlier boards through Pi 4. Its measurements used a monitor, keyboard and mouse, with network connections varying by model, and excluded additional USB-device consumption. It is not a measured Raspberry Pi 5 livestream result, so do not use it as a direct Pi-versus-laptop cost comparison.
Check that the device can sustain the stream you want
Electricity use is only one part of the decision. The Pi or laptop must also encode and send the chosen stream reliably. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.

Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Treat these as encoder guidance, not proof that a particular Pi can handle the load. Check whether the device sustains your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate without overheating or dropping frames, and ensure your upload connection has headroom over the stream bitrate.
YouTube advises streamers to test with similar audio and movement and monitor stream health. Its guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start.” A short successful test does not certify a device for unattended operation; consider what happens after power or network interruptions and whether someone can check or restart the stream.

Other costs and reliability considerations
- Hardware: If you already own the laptop, its purchase price is not an incremental streaming cost. If you buy a Pi or accessories specifically for this setup, include them in the comparison separately from electricity.
- Power behavior: Consider laptop battery and charging behavior, wear, and any attached display or peripherals. Include all equipment that will actually remain on in your meter reading.
- Network and recovery: A 24/7 stream depends on a stable connection and a plan for power or internet outages. The cited YouTube guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not certify a Pi or laptop for uninterrupted unattended service.
- Platform limits: YouTube’s current Help page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Initial livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder streaming setup guidance.
YouTube describes encoder streaming for uses such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware and more involved productions. An official listing for one in-camera app describes support for 24/7 continuous streams; that product-specific description is not a promise of uninterrupted operation for a Pi or laptop.

The Pi is not automatically cheaper, and a spare laptop is not automatically more expensive. The result depends on measured consumption, your tariff, the hardware and peripherals in use, and whether either device can sustain the chosen stream.
