What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no universal cheaper option. A Proxmox home server can cost little extra if you already own the hardware and have reliable, affordable power and internet. A VPS makes the hosting bill more predictable, but its transfer allowance and compute capacity must fit a nonstop stream. Compare your actual power draw and electricity tariff with the VPS plan, then check that your upload connection or data allowance can sustain the encoder’s bitrate around the clock.
What you are paying to keep online
A 24/7 YouTube stream sends one continuous feed from your encoder to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes that incoming stream into different formats for viewers; the outbound viewer renditions are not additional uploads from your server. As YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains, it automatically transcodes a live stream so viewers on different devices and networks can watch.
Your main cost categories are therefore the host, electricity, internet connectivity or VPS transfer, and your own time maintaining the system. Which option wins depends on your actual circumstances, not just the advertised server price.
Estimate the stream’s monthly data first
Use the encoder’s outgoing bitrate to estimate the data sent from either a home server or VPS. At 30 days, 1 Mbps sustained continuously is about 324 decimal GB, before protocol overhead. The calculation is bitrate in Mbps × 1,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Encoder bitrate | Approximate outbound data in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 decimal GB (about 3.0 TiB) |
| 12 Mbps | 3,888 decimal GB (about 3.6 TiB) |
These are arithmetic estimates, not provider measurements; real usage will be somewhat higher because of protocol overhead. Check whether a provider counts decimal GB or binary GiB, and whether its allowance is pooled across a team or account.
Choose a bitrate that matches the stream
YouTube’s encoder recommendations specify H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60, with constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The recommended bitrate also determines the order of magnitude of your monthly upload, so do not estimate transfer using the lower playback quality a viewer might select.

VPS prices and transfer allowances
DigitalOcean’s 2026 Basic Droplet listing gives these examples. The prices and allowances are provider-listed figures, not proof that a plan has sufficient compute capacity for your encoder.
| DigitalOcean Basic plan | Listed monthly price | Listed RAM | Included transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Droplet | $4/month | 512 MiB | 500 GiB |
| Basic Droplet | $6/month | 1 GiB | 1,000 GiB |
| Basic Droplet | $12/month | 2 GiB | 2,000 GiB |
At 10 Mbps, the approximate 30-day stream volume of 3,240 decimal GB is already above these listed transfer allowances; at 12 Mbps, the estimate is higher still. DigitalOcean’s documentation says additional outbound Droplet transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB. Included transfer depends on the plan and is pooled across a team; inbound transfer is free. Review DigitalOcean’s transfer and Droplet pricing documentation for the plan and billing rules that apply when you purchase.

Hetzner’s European Cloud plans list up to 20 TB of included traffic and hourly billing capped at a monthly price. The cited listing does not provide a stable, fully comparable plan price here, so check the current region and configuration before comparing its total cost with another provider. Allowances, prices, and plan details can change.
Do not buy on transfer or price alone
- Transfer: compare your bitrate-derived monthly volume with the plan’s outbound allowance and overage policy.
- Compute: the listed prices and RAM do not establish whether a VPS can encode your source reliably at your chosen resolution. The source, codec, frame rate, and encoder settings matter; no CPU benchmark for a particular workload is established here.
- Location: verify the provider’s region and applicable plan terms at checkout.
Calculate the home server’s incremental cost

Average watts Ă— hours running Ă· 1,000 = kWh; kWh Ă— your electricity price per kWh = electricity cost.
For example, use 24 hours per day and the number of days in the billing period. The result depends on the measured host and local tariff; there is no representative power figure that can be applied to every Proxmox server.

Separate marginal cost from total cost
If you already own the host and pay for broadband regardless, separate those existing household costs from the additional cost of keeping the stream online. If you are buying or upgrading hardware for this purpose, include its purchase cost amortized over the useful life you choose. Add any relevant UPS, storage replacement, cooling, or repair costs separately. Include incremental internet charges if your plan or usage incurs them.

| Factor | Proxmox at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring hosting charge | May be low incrementally if hardware is already owned; electricity and any extra internet costs remain. | A recurring provider charge, with potential transfer overage. |
| Power and connection | Depends on local power, router, ISP reliability, sustained upload capacity, and electricity tariff. | The host and data-center network are provider-operated; you still manage the guest OS and encoder. |
| Failure points | Local power, router, ISP, host, and software can interrupt the upload. | Physical hosting and data-center network operation shift to the provider, while guest OS and encoder operations remain yours. |
| Cost predictability | Requires measuring power and accounting for applicable household or equipment costs. | The base bill is clearer, but confirm transfer, overage, and compute fit. |
This is an operational distinction, not a quantified reliability comparison: no uptime difference is established by the cited sources.
Check the upload before committing
- Set the intended encoder profile. Use YouTube’s guidance for resolution and frame rate; for 1080p30 or 1080p60, its current guide recommends the H.264 bitrates and two-second keyframe interval listed above.
- Measure sustained upload capacity. Compare the bitrate with the connection’s available upload headroom, not merely its advertised maximum. Other household or server traffic can compete for capacity.
- Run a test stream and monitor stream health. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance does not guarantee that a particular ISP connection will remain reliable.
- Check the receiving endpoint and protocol. If configuring RTMPS, Google for Developers describes it as RTMP video tunneled through an SSL connection and specifies port 443. See the YouTube RTMPS guidance.
Which option fits your situation?
- Consider home Proxmox if you already have suitable hardware, can measure and afford its incremental power use, and your ISP can sustain the outgoing bitrate reliably.
- Consider a VPS if you prefer a recurring hosting bill and can verify adequate compute capacity, region, transfer allowance, and overage charges for the continuous upload.
- Do not decide from the headline server price. A low VPS price may not include enough transfer or compute, while a home server’s true incremental cost depends on measured watts, local electricity rates, and connection costs.
