Start after the computer and stream have settled, then record both the meter’s power reading in watts and, if available, accumulated energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) over a measured interval. This gives you the wall-side use of the equipment connected to the meter—not OBS’s share alone or the PC’s internal DC consumption.
What you need and what the meter measures
Use a plug-in watt-hour meter rated for your local outlet and the equipment you intend to connect. The meter measures electricity entering the connected equipment from the mains. For a PC-only result, connect only the PC’s power supply through the meter. If you also connect monitors, speakers, or other devices, the reading includes them too.
A wall reading includes the PC’s components and the power supply’s conversion losses. It does not isolate OBS, the CPU, or the GPU. Software telemetry for individual components may help explain what is happening inside the computer, but it is not a substitute for measuring the whole PC at the outlet. Microsoft’s Sustainable Software guidance describes wall-meter measurement as a way to measure a device’s total power use.
Measure a representative OBS stream
- Check the meter and connection. Plug the watt-hour meter into a suitable wall outlet, then connect the PC’s power supply to the meter. Check that the plug type and electrical rating are appropriate for your region and equipment.
- Start the workload you want to assess. Turn on the PC, open OBS, and start the intended YouTube stream. Use the content, game, scenes, and other programs that are representative of the sessions you want to measure.
- Wait for steady state. Do not use the startup reading as your typical streaming draw. Let the PC and stream settle, then begin your measurement. Microsoft’s guidance recommends steady-state measurements because startup can involve transient energy use.
- Record power and energy over a defined interval. Note the meter’s watt reading and the length of the measurement. If the meter accumulates energy, record its kWh reading at the start and end of the interval, or use its session total if it provides one.
- Write down the conditions. Record the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, active sources, content or game, and whether OBS preview or other demanding applications are running. These details affect the workload and make later comparisons meaningful.
For a laptop, start with the battery fully charged if your aim is to assess the streaming workload rather than energy used to recharge the battery. The wall reading still represents input at the outlet, and a charging laptop’s reading can include charging as well as operation.

Watts, watt-hours, and kWh: how to read the result
- Watts (W) describe power at a moment in time. A changing watt reading is normal as the PC’s workload changes.
- Watt-hours (Wh) and kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe energy used over time. One kWh is 1,000 Wh. For the electricity consumed during a stream, the meter’s accumulated energy over the session is generally more useful than a single watt reading.
- Cost depends on your measured kWh and your electricity rate. Multiply the energy used in kWh by the rate charged per kWh; use the rate and billing units on your own electricity bill.
A short watt reading cannot establish the energy use of a longer stream unless the workload remains comparable throughout. Conversely, a session kWh total is meaningful only when the measurement duration and connected equipment are clear.
Make comparisons fair
OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS also uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; a demanding game can leave less GPU capacity available for OBS. A reading from one setup therefore is not a general benchmark for another PC or stream.

When comparing two configurations, keep the measurement interval and connected equipment the same, and record these factors:
- Average or representative wall-side power in watts and accumulated energy in kWh.
- Encoder, output resolution, and frame rate.
- Scene complexity and active sources.
- Game or video content and other running programs.
- Whether the measurement includes only the PC or also peripherals such as displays and speakers.
No reliable typical wattage for the specific combination of a PC, YouTube streaming, and OBS is established here. Measure your own setup rather than treating another computer’s reading as a universal figure.

Troubleshooting readings that seem wrong
- The reading is unusually high right after startup: wait for startup activity and the stream workload to settle, then take a steady-state reading.
- Your result differs between sessions: compare encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, game or content load, other programs, and measurement duration. Differences in those conditions can change OBS and PC workload.
- The meter shows more use than expected: check whether the meter is also measuring a monitor, speakers, or other connected equipment. For PC-only use, measure only the PC’s power supply.
- A laptop’s reading rises while streaming: if it is charging, the wall measurement can include battery charging. Begin with a fully charged battery when you want to reduce that confounding factor.
- You have CPU or GPU software readings but no wall measurement: treat them as component-level context, not as total system use. Use a wall meter for the PC’s total mains input.
