OBS or FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Live Product Showcase

OBS suits scene-based, GUI production; FFmpeg suits scripted feeds. Compare workflows, configure YouTube's current ingest settings, and plan for monitoring, recovery, and archives.

Choose OBS if your product showcase needs a graphical interface, scenes, overlays, or live operator changes. Choose FFmpeg if the feed is prepared media and you want to run a repeatable, scripted pipeline. Neither choice is proven inherently more reliable for 24/7 operation: continuous streaming also needs monitoring, a recovery plan, and a realistic archive strategy.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your showcase?

The practical difference is workflow, not a demonstrated reliability advantage. OBS is a GUI production tool suited to assembling scenes and making changes while the stream is running. FFmpeg is a command-line option suited to a scripted process that sends prepared media or a repeatable feed. Choose based on how the showcase is produced and who will maintain it.

Need OBS FFmpeg
Scenes, overlays, and operator-driven changes Better fit for a graphical production workflow. OBS documents its streaming setup and encoder options. OBS streaming guide Better fit when the pipeline is defined in a script; exact commands and flags need validation against the installed FFmpeg version and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
Prepared media or repeatable output Can be used where a GUI and operator controls are useful. Often a natural workflow choice when the input and output process are known and scripted.
Codec and host load OBS describes H.264 as its default codec. Its format guide notes that software AV1 encoding requires high-end CPUs for real-time compression; recent hardware encoders can handle AV1. OBS encoding and recording guide Depends on the selected codec, encoder, resolution, frame rate, filters, and input pipeline. There is no universal minimum host specification established here.
24/7 supervision and recovery Requires a plan to monitor the process and respond if the stream or source fails. Requires a plan to monitor the process, logs, and source, and to respond if the stream or script fails.

Do not treat a published encoder recommendation as proof that a particular computer can run a particular scene or script continuously. Test the actual content, codec, frame rate, and any local recording load on the intended host.

Set YouTube’s ingest and video settings

Use YouTube’s current recommendations rather than copying an old OBS tutorial or command line. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS where supported; RTMPS encrypts the stream through SSL. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

SDR video target YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations on its current guidance page, checked in 2026—not guarantees of picture quality or a substitute for a stable upload connection. For a simple 1080p SDR showcase, 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps is a reasonable starting point if the connection can sustain it. Leave capacity for normal network variation and test before relying on the stream.

Picture, audio, and keyframe settings

For SDR, YouTube’s advanced guidance recommends Rec. 709, 8-bit color, square pixels, and progressive scan. Its listed audio guidance is stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use compatible settings exposed by your chosen encoder; exact control names differ between versions and workflows.

Set up the stream key and start safely

  1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Follow the current on-screen workflow; older OBS tutorials may show obsolete verification or interface steps.
  2. Copy the stream key securely. Select the intended stream in the Live Control Room and use its stream key in the encoder’s current streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or public support post.
  3. Configure the encoder. In OBS, select the YouTube service or the available custom RTMPS server/key option and apply the video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings above. For FFmpeg, validate the command and codec flags against the installed FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s current requirements; no unverified command is safe to copy as a universal 24/7 recipe.
  4. Run a representative test. Send the same kind of footage, graphics, motion, and audio you intend to show. Confirm that the Live Control Room receives the stream and that the picture and sound are acceptable before committing to a continuous broadcast.
  5. Start and monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and address warnings rather than assuming that a running encoder means a healthy viewer-facing stream. YouTube documents health and status data through its Live Streaming API, including labels such as good, ok, bad, and noData. See YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams.

Make a 24/7 feed maintainable

A continuous showcase is an operating process, not just an encoder setting. Keep source media available if a remote source can fail, decide who responds to a dropped connection, and establish how the encoder or host will be checked and restarted. YouTube’s health indicators can surface problems, but they do not substitute for a person or a tested monitoring and recovery arrangement.

  • Check the host, encoder, source files, and upload connection before launch.
  • Plan for a failed source, lost connection, encoder crash, or host restart, and decide who is responsible for recovery.
  • Use representative motion and sound during testing, then continue monitoring YouTube’s health messages during the broadcast.
  • If local recording is enabled, include its storage and encoding demands in the host test; the stream workload alone does not describe the full load.

There is no universal minimum computer specification for this use: the requirement depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, and whether recording runs at the same time. A spare computer, dedicated mini PC, or remote host may suit different workloads; choose only after testing the actual setup.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not promise viewers an uninterrupted YouTube replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; alternatively, plan shorter broadcasts if preserving replays matters, while considering the effect of planned transitions on audience continuity. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems

Symptom What to check Practical response
YouTube does not receive a feed Confirm the selected broadcast, stream key, server or protocol, and encoder output status. Recheck the current Live Control Room settings and key, then restart the encoder only after confirming the source and destination are correct.
Stream health reports a problem Review YouTube’s health messages and the encoder’s output and connection status. Address the specific configuration or connection issue reported; do not infer health from an encoder window that appears active.
Video stutters or loses quality Compare the configured bitrate with the upload connection’s sustained capacity; inspect host load and the chosen codec. Test at a lower resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target, then verify again with representative footage.
Picture or audio looks wrong Check resolution, frame rate, SDR color settings, audio format, and whether the test content resembles the actual show. Correct the incompatible setting and run another representative test before returning to the continuous broadcast.
Feed stops after a host or source failure Check whether the encoder process, host, or media source stopped. Restore the source and process, then confirm YouTube receives a healthy feed. Continuous operation requires an explicit supervision and recovery plan.
No full replay appears on YouTube Check the broadcast duration. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; rely on a local recording or design shorter broadcasts if an archive is essential.

Use only media you have the right to stream

A product showcase may contain music, footage, artwork, logos, or other material whose rights are not yours. Confirm you have permission for the intended live use, including any music or third-party footage, before broadcasting. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish that a particular product, music track, or reused video is cleared for your channel. Do not treat a technically successful stream as proof that the content is authorized.
