To transition smoothly between prerecorded retail promos during a YouTube Live stream, prepare each promo as a separate scene in OBS Studio, choose a scene transition and duration, and switch scenes while OBS stays connected to YouTube. Use Studio Mode to preview the next promo before taking it live. YouTube receives the finished OBS output; the transition happens in the encoder, not through YouTube’s Take a Break feature.
What you need and how the transition works
You need the promo video files, an encoder such as OBS Studio, and a YouTube stream configured in Live Control Room. For this workflow, OBS composes the program YouTube receives. Switching between scenes changes that outgoing program without stopping and restarting the YouTube broadcast.
OBS offers Fade and Cut by default, and its overview also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. You can choose a transition and adjust its duration. OBS does not prescribe a duration for retail promos, so choose by previewing your actual creative.
Prepare promo scenes in OBS
- Create a scene for each promo. In OBS, add a distinct scene for each segment you want to select during the broadcast.
- Add the corresponding video file as a source. Check the scene preview to confirm the intended picture and audio appear. Arrange the scenes in the order you expect to use them.
- Check the creative before rehearsal. Confirm logos, prices, terms, disclaimers, and calls to action are legible in the outgoing frame. Listen for audio that should continue, stop, or change with each promo.
These are practical setup steps for your files and event; OBS documents scene switching and transitions, not a tested retail-promo configuration.

Choose a transition that fits the handoff

In OBS’s Scene Transitions controls, select the transition and set its duration. Treat the timing as a creative decision: test it with the actual clips rather than assuming one duration suits every offer.
Preview and rehearse scene changes
- Use Studio Mode if you need a preview-before-live workflow. It separates the scene currently on air from the scene you are preparing, so you can inspect the next promo before transitioning it to the output.
- Set up repeatable controls if useful. OBS supports Quick Transitions and hotkeys. Configure them only if they suit the operator and rehearsal; a control pad is optional, not required.
- Rehearse the sequence and handoff. Run the clips in order, test each transition, and monitor the outgoing picture and sound. Confirm the operator knows which scene is live and which is next.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and start the broadcast
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and configure the encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder flow uses a stream URL and stream key, which you enter in OBS’s streaming settings.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for encoder streaming.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview and check that the expected scene and audio are arriving.
- Select Go live in Live Control Room when ready. Keep OBS sending the program as you switch scenes during the event; do not stop and restart the encoder for each promo.

Keep YouTube’s Take a Break separate from promo switching
YouTube’s Take a Break control is for an away slate and may show ads to eligible viewers. It is not a playlist or a method for chaining retail promo scenes. The break does not end automatically when its countdown reaches zero; an operator must end it in Live Control Room.
YouTube also sets eligibility conditions for a custom video used as a break overlay: it must be public or unlisted and allow embedding, and it cannot be a Premiere, members-only, monetized video, or a video with a copyright claim. Troubleshoot common transition problems
- The wrong promo appears on air: In Studio Mode, verify the prepared scene before transitioning it. Rehearse scene order and operator handoffs.
- A transition hides price or legal copy: Preview the effect and duration with the actual creative. Try Cut or a shorter, less intrusive transition if the copy is difficult to read.
- There is a black frame or an audio jolt: Check how the source clips begin and end, then test the handoff. A Cut may suit clips edited to meet cleanly, but verify the visual and audio result.
- The Live Control Room preview does not show the program: Confirm OBS has the correct YouTube stream URL and key, that the encoder is sending, and that you have allowed time for the preview to appear before selecting Go live.
- The Take a Break slate remains after its countdown: End the break manually in Live Control Room; reaching zero does not end it automatically.
