How to Estimate RPM for a Monetized 24/7 YouTube Livestream

Use YouTube Analytics revenue and views for the same period and scope to calculate RPM. For forecasts, use paired scenarios based on your own channel history.

To estimate RPM for a monetized 24/7 YouTube livestream, divide estimated revenue by views for the same date range and content scope, then multiply by 1,000: RPM = estimated revenue ÷ views × 1,000. For a forecast, estimate revenue and views separately from comparable livestream and replay data on your own channel; there is no universal 24/7 livestream RPM rate.

What RPM measures—and what it does not

YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue after YouTube’s revenue share per 1,000 video views. Its total RPM can include ads, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. It includes all views, including views that did not generate revenue. See YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics.

CPM is different: it refers to advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. A view, an ad impression, and a monetized playback are also different measures. One playback can include more than one ad impression, and many views do not show an ad. To reproduce YouTube’s total RPM, use views—not impressions or monetized playbacks—as the denominator.

Calculate RPM for a past period

  1. Choose the period and scope. In YouTube Analytics, select the date range and decide whether you are measuring the live event, its replay, or both. Keep that scope consistent for revenue and views.
  2. Choose a revenue measure. For total RPM, use estimated revenue for the same scope and period. That measure can include ads, Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. If you use estimated ad revenue instead, label the result as an ads-only calculation rather than total RPM.
  3. Get the matching view count. Use views for precisely the same period and content scope as the revenue figure.
  4. Apply the formula. Divide revenue by views and multiply by 1,000. For example, hypothetical revenue of $240 divided by 80,000 views, then multiplied by 1,000, equals $3 RPM. This is arithmetic only—not a benchmark or an expected rate.
  5. Use video-level reporting where available. YouTube Analytics lets creators inspect revenue for live streams and live replays. Comparing the actual asset is more relevant than borrowing a rate from an unrelated upload.

Forecast future RPM without guessing

A future RPM is a scenario, not a guaranteed rate. Start with comparable live and replay periods from your own channel, then forecast revenue and views separately. Build low, base, and high cases, pairing each revenue assumption with its own view assumption; calculate each case using the same RPM formula.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.

Do not multiply hours streamed by a generic CPM and call the result RPM. CPM is based on ad impressions, whereas RPM is based on views and includes non-ad revenue in its total form. The number of ad opportunities and the number of ads actually served vary, so stream duration alone cannot establish either views or revenue.

Make comparisons genuinely comparable

  • Use the same date range and clarify whether each figure covers the live session, replay, or both.
  • Keep the revenue definition constant: total estimated revenue is not interchangeable with estimated ad revenue.
  • Compare views alongside monetized-playback and ad-impression patterns, but do not substitute either of those measures for views in the RPM denominator.
  • Consider changes in viewer geography, audience mix, Premium viewing, and the balance between advertising and fan funding.
  • Note whether the figures are estimates or have been adjusted later.

Why views and revenue do not rise in lockstep

A monetized channel does not earn an ad on every view. YouTube identifies factors that can prevent an ad from appearing, including ad suitability, ads being turned off, unavailable inventory for a viewer, viewer geography, recent ad exposure, and Premium status. As a result, two periods with similar view counts can produce different revenue, and a stream running continuously does not make every playback ad-supported.

Keep revenue scopes consistent as well. The YouTube Analytics API describes estimatedAdRevenue as estimated net revenue from Google-sold advertising; estimated revenue metrics can be adjusted at month-end and omit partner-served ads. Do not combine a gross advertiser figure with net creator revenue when calculating RPM. The API also documents a ±2.0% expected estimated error for the monetizedPlaybacks metric specifically; that figure does not describe RPM or revenue accuracy. See the YouTube Analytics API metrics reference.

Account for changes in YouTube view counting

YouTube’s official blog says its standardized view-counting definition applies across Live and other formats from August 24, 2026. When comparing older periods with newer ones, check whether the counting definition changed across the dates you are using; a difference in reported views may affect the calculation independently of revenue. See YouTube’s announcement.
