To keep a 24/7 YouTube stream from appearing to end at a playlist transition, keep the broadcast connection running while the media changes—and test the entire path from player to YouTube preview. A playlist can loop correctly while OBS, its encoder, the computer, or the internet connection fails; conversely, the broadcast can stay connected while a transition produces a black frame or audio gap. No loop setting or hosting choice can guarantee that viewers will not leave.
What viewers experience when a playlist changes
A playlist is only the media schedule. YouTube receives a live broadcast from an encoder or managed playout service; it does not turn a playlist page into a live feed by itself. At a transition, viewers may see a black frame, abrupt cut, or pause in audio even if the broadcast remains connected. If the encoder stops or the uplink drops, the public stream may actually go offline.
That distinction determines what to troubleshoot: check both the media output and the broadcast status. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the platform connection: YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming. OBS playback behavior is documented in its Media Sources guide.
Choose who will run the playout
| Option | Playlist transitions | What you must operate | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — first option to consider for prepared-video playout | Upload videos, build a playlist, and manage the stream in the cloud; test changes with your own channel before relying on them. | Upload media and add your YouTube stream key. | Runs without a home computer, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. First day is free, no card. |
| OBS with local files and a VLC playlist | Edits to a live VLC playlist may not appear consistently; verify the program output after each edit. | Keep the computer, files, OBS/VLC, power, and internet available. | Hands-on control and less dependence on a playout vendor, but the local setup is a chain of potential failure points. |
| Self-hosted FFmpeg on a VPS | A scripted pipeline can loop prepared files and send output to YouTube; behavior depends on your implementation. | Maintain Linux, FFmpeg, storage, scripts, monitoring, and server configuration. | More control and automation potential, with greater technical and administrative responsibility. |
| Other managed cloud playout | Some vendors describe playlist editing and reconnect or restart functions; verify how those work on the current plan. | Upload media, configure the service, and manage the YouTube connection. | Less reliance on a home encoder, but behavior, limits, cost, and recovery depend on the vendor. |
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not a camera broadcast. Its service details are at StreamNeo. For other managed providers, live-edit and recovery statements are vendor claims, not independent performance findings; confirm the current plan and test the workflow.

Make playlist transitions safer in OBS
Prepare and test the media
- Build the playlist before the broadcast. Confirm the order, playback behavior, and whether each item is available locally. Do not assume a live playlist-file edit will be reloaded by the source.
- Check the joins. Preview the end of each video and the beginning of the next. Look for unintended black frames, silence, clipped audio tails, sudden volume changes, and aspect-ratio changes.
- Test the actual program path. In OBS, verify the media source or VLC source, scene, and final program output. Run a private or unlisted test, or use a noncritical broadcast, and inspect YouTube’s live preview and status as well as the OBS output.
- Keep a fallback ready. Prepare a simple scene or slate that can be shown if a file fails. Test switching to it before depending on it during an unattended stream.
Be cautious when editing a live VLC playlist
A 2023 OBS forum discussion includes an operator report that playlist edits sometimes appeared during a broadcast and sometimes did not appear until OBS and YouTube were shut down and restarted. A community reply suggested scenes and automation, including preparing replacement content before switching; that is forum advice, not authoritative OBS support. Treat live edits as uncertain: make changes during planned maintenance where possible, then confirm what is actually reaching the output before assuming the audience sees the new item.
Keep the local host available
A local all-day stream depends on the computer, media files, OBS/VLC, power, and internet remaining available. A UPS may help a computer and router ride through a brief power interruption, but it cannot fix a network outage, encoder crash, or YouTube-side problem. A local setup needs someone or some monitoring process able to notice and address failures.

Use FFmpeg or managed playout when local playback is not the right fit
Self-hosted FFmpeg
FFmpeg can loop prepared files and send an RTMP feed to YouTube. One public Ubuntu example combines normalized media, an FFmpeg looping pipeline, and systemd supervision: the operator’s implementation on GitHub. It is an example, not an independently tested universal recipe. You remain responsible for adapting the command and media, keeping credentials secure, monitoring the process, and checking YouTube’s received stream.
Managed cloud playout
Cloud playout moves the encoder workload off the home computer and can make remote playlist management practical. Providers such as Looping Stream and Streamloop describe playlist and recovery features; those descriptions should be treated as vendor claims. Before entrusting a valuable channel, check current upload and storage limits, supported media and quality, how playlist changes take effect, what happens after a dropped connection, and the current price. Test with your own YouTube configuration: a claimed reconnect does not establish that a transition is invisible to viewers.

Monitor the transition and diagnose failures
- Black frame or pause, but YouTube stays live: Inspect the outgoing OBS program and the source at the boundary. Check the end and start frames, source switching, and media availability; adjust the playlist or prepare a tested fallback.
- A live playlist edit does not appear: Do not assume a VLC playlist reloads cleanly. Confirm the actual OBS output; if it remains stale, schedule a controlled restart or switch to a preconfigured replacement scene after testing.
- Audio cuts out or changes abruptly: Listen to the transition in the live preview and inspect the audio tails and levels of both files. Correct the media or transition plan rather than treating it as a YouTube connection issue.
- YouTube reports a dropped connection or OBS shows connection trouble: Check the encoder and network separately from media playback. A correctly looping source cannot restore a failed uplink; confirm whether the encoder has resumed and what YouTube reports.
- The stream stops when nobody is present: For local playout, check host power, software, files, and internet. For VPS or cloud playout, inspect the relevant process or service status and its recovery behavior; do not infer successful recovery from a vendor feature description alone.
After every material playlist change, watch the outgoing preview, audio meters, dropped-frame or connection indicators, and the public viewer experience. If a problem recurs, note the transition time and compare encoder logs with YouTube’s stream status. There is no published transition-specific viewer-retention benchmark establishing that any one fix prevents viewers from leaving.

Plan for continuous operation and YouTube rules
Regardless of the playout method, use content you have the rights to stream. A 24/7 schedule does not make copyrighted footage or music permissible, and permission to upload a video does not automatically establish permission for every use. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and applicable copyright requirements before building a long-running playlist. Also consider whether the channel’s material offers original value: repetitive or reused material can raise monetization-policy concerns even when the live encoder works as intended.
There is no evidence here quantifying how many viewers a transition loses or proving that one setup eliminates such losses. The practical goal is to remove avoidable playback cuts, keep the encoder path healthy, and verify the result on YouTube.
