24/7 YouTube Stream Cost in India: Raspberry Pi vs VPS in Rupees

A fair Pi-versus-VPS comparison needs measured wall power, your electricity tariff, bitrate, VPS transfer limits, taxes and billing currency—not a universal rupee estimate.

There is no reliable single monthly rupee price for running a 24/7 YouTube stream on a Raspberry Pi or VPS: the result depends on your electricity tariff, measured power use, stream bitrate, server plan and transfer allowance. To compare them fairly, calculate the Pi’s measured electricity and hardware costs against the VPS bill, including storage, excess traffic, tax and currency conversion. A third option—managed cloud streaming—is useful for prerecorded playlists, but it has different limits and terms.

What determines the monthly cost?

For a Raspberry Pi, add electricity and the amortized cost of the board, power supply and storage. For a VPS, add the server plan, any required storage, tax and traffic charges beyond the included transfer. Convert the VPS bill using the exchange rate actually applied by the provider or payment method. For either option, consider the value of your setup, monitoring and recovery time.

These are separate from the YouTube encoder settings. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and monitoring stream health; it says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” It also recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Estimate the Raspberry Pi’s electricity cost

Use a plug-in power meter to measure the complete setup at the wall while it is doing the intended job. Do not treat the board’s rated current as the setup’s measured power draw.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Measure average wall power in watts with the Pi, power supply, storage and any other equipment you will leave running.
  2. Calculate monthly energy: measured watts Ă— 720 hours Ă· 1,000 = kWh for a 30-day month.
  3. Multiply that energy by your household’s applicable electricity tariff in rupees per kWh.
  4. Add an appropriate monthly share of the upfront board, power supply and storage cost.

For illustration only, a hypothetical 3 W measured at the wall would use 2.16 kWh in 30 days (3 Ă— 720 Ă· 1,000). This is a calculation scenario, not a measured streaming result, and the electricity bill depends on your tariff and billing rules.

Raspberry Pi’s official documentation lists 800 mA as the Pi 5’s typical bare-board active current consumption and recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply. Those figures are not a measurement of a Pi 5 streaming at the wall: peripherals, workload and power-supply losses affect consumption. Consult the Raspberry Pi documentation and measure your own configuration.

Estimate a VPS bill, including continuous traffic

A VPS price alone is not an apples-to-apples cost. Check the exact plan, billing region, included monthly transfer, excess-transfer terms, storage, tax and billing currency. Then convert the actual bill to rupees at the rate you will pay. A plan with too little included transfer may become more expensive or unsuitable under its terms.

At a constant bitrate, approximate 30-day traffic is bitrate in bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This gives about 1.62 decimal TB at 5 Mbps and 1.94 decimal TB at 6 Mbps, before protocol overhead. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider measurements. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; the bitrate you choose changes the transfer requirement. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for settings by codec, resolution and frame rate.

The available evidence does not establish a current official VPS bill for a particular workload or plan, nor a verified current transfer allowance for a provider. Get those figures from the provider’s plan and billing terms before comparing costs; do not assume that a low advertised server price includes enough monthly traffic for a continuous video stream.

Compare the three approaches

Option Recurring cost to include Who maintains it Important trade-off
Raspberry Pi at home Measured electricity, home internet and amortized hardware costs You handle the operating system, encoder, restart behavior and local connectivity Depends on the home power and internet connection; actual streaming power use must be measured.
VPS Server charge, storage, traffic above included transfer, tax and currency conversion You configure and monitor the server software Moves the stream off your home computer and connection, but does not remove server setup or traffic-limit concerns.
Managed prerecorded-stream service Subscription, subject to stream count, quality, storage and plan terms The service handles its advertised automation; check its recovery and service terms Can avoid maintaining your own streaming machine, but compare limits and terms rather than assuming equivalent service.

For a managed prerecorded-stream option, StreamNeo is #1: it runs a YouTube stream from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Other vendor-listed examples include YtLive Stream’s ₹499/month plan for one active 720p stream and ₹999/month plan for two active 1080p streams; its pricing page advertises auto-recovery on the latter plan. StreamSetu lists plans from $5/month per channel, with the exact quality rate shown in its dashboard. These are vendor-published prices and descriptions, not independent performance findings; verify current terms at checkout. See YtLive Stream pricing and StreamSetu pricing.

Choose based on the work your stream does

Looping a prerecorded video

If the source is already encoded and you are replaying a file or playlist, compare storage, looping behavior, transfer costs and recovery. The hardware needed to replay a file is not automatically the hardware needed to encode a live source.

Encoding a live camera or gameplay feed

A live source must be captured and encoded as well as sent. YouTube defines an encoder as converting video into a digital stream and publishes codec and bitrate guidance, but the figures here do not establish that a Raspberry Pi can handle every input, codec, resolution or frame rate. Test the exact source and configuration rather than assuming it performs like playback of a pre-rendered file.

What to verify before committing

  • For a Pi: measured wall draw under the intended workload, local upload reliability, hardware and storage costs, and how you will restart and monitor the system.
  • For a VPS: provider and region, monthly compute charge, included transfer, excess-transfer rate, storage, taxes and the conversion rate applied to your bill.
  • For a managed service: number of simultaneous streams, resolution or quality limits, included storage, recovery terms, tax and cancellation terms.
  • For any method: the time and responsibility involved in setup, monitoring and recovery. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; it does not guarantee a specific device’s uptime.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archive on the basis of that guidance. Read YouTube’s live encoder instructions and plan any recording or archive needs separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo replaces the always-on home computer or self-managed server with a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on. Your uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream and 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
