A typical AWS workflow ingests a live source, encodes it with AWS Elemental MediaLive, packages it with AWS Elemental MediaPackage when the workflow needs packaging or multi-format outputs, and delivers the resulting manifests and video segments through CloudFront. If MediaLive has already produced formats suitable for every target device, AWS also documents MediaStore as an origin option.
What CloudFront does in a continuous live channel
CloudFront sits between a prepared video origin and viewers. The incoming video must first be encoded and made available in segments and manifests that playback devices can use. Common streaming formats include HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. CloudFront distributes those outputs; it does not turn a raw camera or program feed into a playable stream by itself.
AWS describes live video as content streamed in real time as events happen or as a 24×7 live channel. For a continuous channel, the architecture still depends on the upstream ingest, encoding, packaging, origin, and delivery choices; CloudFront alone does not provide the whole chain.
Choose the AWS origin and packaging path
The key decision is whether the encoded output is already suitable for all the devices and formats you intend to support, or whether it needs further packaging.

| Path | When it fits | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront | Use this when the workflow needs MediaPackage to prepare content for multiple formats or requires packaging features such as DRM. | Configure the MediaPackage endpoint, then create CloudFront origin and cache behaviors that match the endpoint’s actual format and paths. |
| MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront | AWS documents MediaStore as an origin option when MediaLive has already produced the formats required by the target viewers’ devices. | Confirm that the output formats already meet playback needs; do not assume this path provides MediaPackage’s packaging features. |
For new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows, AWS recommends a MediaPackage v2 output group using CMAF Ingest, including for low-latency delivery workflows. Check the MediaPackage version and channel configuration before applying examples written for v1.
Plan the delivery architecture
- Identify the source and ingest path. Determine how the live program reaches AWS and what input MediaLive will receive. The specific ingest configuration depends on the source and is not interchangeable with the CloudFront distribution configuration.
- Choose the encoded outputs. Define the formats and output profiles needed by the devices and regions you serve. AWS lists HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF as common delivery formats; the chosen outputs affect packaging, paths, bandwidth, and cost.
- Select the origin. Use MediaPackage when its multi-format packaging or other packaging features are needed. Consider MediaStore when MediaLive has already generated the required formats.
- Configure CloudFront for the real endpoint. Set the origin to the relevant AWS endpoint and create cache behaviors with path patterns matching the endpoint’s manifests and segments. AWS examples separate manifest and segment behaviors, but exact file extensions and paths depend on the selected format and endpoint.
- Authorize access to the origin. AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront. Configure the authorization for the actual MediaPackage and distribution setup rather than treating an open origin as a production default.
- Validate playback through the distribution. Check that the manifest and referenced segments are reachable through the intended CloudFront paths and that the chosen playback devices can use the output format. Test the actual endpoint paths; example patterns should not be copied without substituting the endpoint identifiers and verifying the outputs.
Configure cache behaviors for manifests and segments
Manifests and media segments have different roles in playback, and AWS’s examples use separate CloudFront behaviors for them. The behavior path patterns must match the paths returned by the configured MediaPackage endpoint. Do not assume that an HLS example’s extensions apply to a CMAF or DASH endpoint; inspect the real endpoint format and route its manifest and segment requests accordingly.

For Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) blocking playlist requests, AWS says the manifest cache policy must forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query-string parameters. Apply that requirement to the manifest behavior when using the blocking playlist request feature. A cache policy that omits those parameters does not match the documented LL-HLS configuration.
Origin authorization also matters: AWS recommends header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization for the CloudFront-to-MediaPackage connection. Treat the authorization and cache-policy configuration as part of the end-to-end design, not an optional finishing step.

Account for low latency and resilience
Low latency is a workflow choice, not a property created simply by putting CloudFront in front of a stream. AWS’s current integration guidance recommends MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows, including low-latency delivery. Confirm the relevant service version and endpoint configuration before following instructions written for MediaPackage v1.
AWS’s Live Streaming solution is a reference design that processes two feeds in parallel with MediaLive, has MediaPackage produce HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints, and authorizes CloudFront to access MediaPackage using a CDN Identifier. It illustrates one redundancy and delivery design; it is not a requirement that every channel use two feeds or identical endpoint choices. Select redundancy based on the channel’s operational needs and validate each path in the intended deployment.

Estimate the cost of a 24/7 channel
Do not treat an event estimate as a continuous-channel quote. AWS deployment guidance lists an illustrative cost of $69.74 per hour for a specific example with 1,000 viewers and a one-hour live event. AWS does not state a publication year for that example, and its stated output profile and other assumptions are specific to that workload. It is not a general current price for 24/7 streaming.
A continuous-channel estimate needs the actual workload and current account-region rates. The main inputs AWS identifies are output bitrate, audience traffic, selected services, and the split between origin and CDN delivery. Establish the following before estimating:
Best Value
- Up max to 1080P@60fps HDMI Video
- H.265, H.264 high/main/baseline profile video code and AAC/MP3 audio code
- RTMP/RTMPS/SRT/RTSP/UDP/HTTP/Multicast/Unicast Protocols
- Support text and image OSD management
- The output ladder, formats, and bitrate for each rendition.
- Expected concurrent viewers and total viewing hours.
- Viewer geography and the regions in which delivery is expected.
- Whether the workflow needs MediaPackage, MediaStore, or packaging features such as DRM.
- Redundancy and endpoint requirements.
- Current prices for the selected services in the account’s regions.
Because those inputs can differ substantially from an event example, multiplying the stated hourly figure by 24 and presenting the result as a channel quote would be misleading.
Common planning mistakes
- Expecting CloudFront to encode a raw source: place encoding and any required packaging upstream; CloudFront distributes prepared outputs.
- Choosing an origin before checking output formats: decide whether MediaLive’s output already supports all target devices or needs MediaPackage packaging.
- Copying sample path patterns literally: derive manifest and segment behaviors from the real endpoint and chosen format.
- Omitting LL-HLS request parameters: for blocking playlist requests, forward
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partin the manifest cache policy. - Applying old-version examples to a new workflow: check whether the setup uses MediaPackage v2 and CMAF Ingest before using v1-specific instructions.
- Budgeting from an unrelated event example: estimate from your channel’s own bitrate, viewing hours, audience, regions, services, and current regional rates.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that loops uploaded video—not an AWS distribution architecture for delivering a live feed to your own viewers—StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded video as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
