There is no single monthly price for a nonstop, radio-style YouTube stream made from prerecorded files. Your cost depends on whether you use a computer you already own, a dedicated always-on computer, a VPS or a managed cloud service—and on what you need for monitoring, recovery, archiving and music rights.
For a basic setup, YouTube does not charge a separate fee simply to receive an encoder feed. A cloud broadcast stack is a different proposition: it can bill separately for encoding, packaging and delivery to viewers. The AWS examples below illustrate that distinction; they are not prices for YouTube ingest or a simple file loop.
What goes into the cost?
Separate one-time purchases from recurring charges. The encoder host is only one part of the budget; a stream that must remain live also needs a plan for power, connectivity, monitoring, recovery and content rights.
| Cost area | What to include | How to estimate it |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder host | An existing computer, an optional dedicated computer, a VPS or a managed streaming service. | Compare the cost of hardware you would otherwise buy with recurring hosting or service charges. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder, but do not require buying a new computer. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. |
| Power and internet | Electricity and the connection used by a computer kept online. | Use your local electricity rate, connection plan and data terms. These costs vary by deployment; no universal figure is established here. |
| Cloud encoding and delivery | Depending on the architecture, encoding, packaging or origination, and delivery to viewers may be separate billable services. | Estimate from the actual service, region, bitrate, viewer-hours and configuration. A cloud broadcast stack is not equivalent to sending an encoder feed to YouTube. |
| Operations and continuity | Time or service costs for monitoring, restarting after failures, keeping backups and deciding how to handle long archives. | Set a resilience target and include the people or tools needed to meet it; do not assume a host price includes recovery or archive preservation. |
| Music and content rights | Licensing necessary to stream the audio and other material. | Confirm rights for the intended use and territory. Owning an audio file or paying for a listening subscription does not itself establish streaming rights. |
What do the options cost in practice?
Use a computer you already have
If a suitable computer is already available, you may avoid a hardware purchase. The ongoing costs are still electricity, internet and the time or tools required to keep the encoder running and recover it if something fails. YouTube documents connecting an encoder and sending a feed, but does not prescribe computer specifications or require a new device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Buy a dedicated computer
A separate computer is an optional purchase for people who want an always-on encoder without tying up their everyday machine. No required specification or standard purchase price is established here. Include the device’s purchase cost, power use and maintenance in your own estimate.
Use a VPS or managed prerecorded-stream service
A remote host can keep an encoder online without leaving a computer at home. However, no comparable current VPS or managed prerecorded-loop price, bandwidth allowance or uptime promise is established here. Compare providers only after checking their current terms for bitrate, data transfer, storage, recovery and support; a low headline host price alone does not show the full monthly cost.
Use a managed cloud broadcast stack
A broadcast architecture can include separate encoding, packaging or origination, and viewer delivery. Those services can make it substantially different from a simple encoder feed to YouTube, and delivery costs may rise with audience and bitrate.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning guide currently displays a modeled month of $3,838.69 for approximately 100 viewers watching 200 hours at 1080p in US East (N. Virginia): $904.69 for encoding and packaging plus $2,934 for distribution. This is a specific AWS MediaLive, MediaPackage and CloudFront scenario, not a YouTube fee, a VPS quote or the price of a minimal prerecorded-file loop. AWS says its examples use straightforward assumptions and may exceed actual costs; the estimate assumes viewers consume the highest bitrate. AWS Live Streaming on AWS planning guide.
The same guide currently displays a modeled total of $69.74 for a one-hour SD-540p event with approximately 1,000 viewers: about $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution. That example shows how delivery can dominate, but it is not a monthly 24/7-stream estimate. Both AWS scenarios depend on bitrate, viewer count, cache behavior, region and selected services; the guide does not state a publication year for these examples.
AWS says MediaLive charges according to inputs, outputs and add-ons, and that channels incur charges while running. Its pricing page also describes reserved pricing for channels running more than 180 hours per month. Check the selected region and configuration in the AWS MediaLive pricing details and pricing calculator rather than applying a planning-guide example to a different setup.

How to compare two setups fairly
Compare like with like. A fixed monthly host charge and usage-based encoding or delivery charges are not directly comparable unless the workload and reliability target match.
- Stream workload: use the same resolution, bitrate and number of stream hours.
- Audience: estimate monthly viewer-hours and delivered bitrate; audience delivery can be a major part of a managed broadcast bill.
- Geography and configuration: use the same cloud region and service assumptions where possible.
- Continuity: account for who monitors the stream, restarts it and responds to a failed encoder or connection.
- Archive and backups: decide whether you need a replay, a separate recording or a recovery copy of the files.
- Rights: include the cost and work of confirming that music and other content may be livestreamed.
Can you loop prerecorded files on YouTube Live?
You can send prerecorded material as a live encoder feed, but the stream still has to comply with YouTube’s rules and the rights you hold. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers represent and warrant that they have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. Do not assume a loop will qualify for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams. Monetized content should be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its repetitious-content policy and renamed it inauthentic content. A loop of prerecorded files is not automatically eligible: the channel and content remain subject to review. YouTube channel monetization policies.
Eligible channels may earn through ads and, where available, Super Chat, Super Stickers and memberships. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads, so projected ad income is uncertain and should not be subtracted from the operating budget as though it were assured. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay of a nonstop stream, plan how it will be preserved rather than relying on the automatic archive. A local or separate backup recording may be appropriate when retaining the full stream matters. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
