Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source for a playlist of multiple videos. Add the files, set their order, and enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to repeat. You can change the content OBS is sending while keeping the YouTube stream active; you do not need to end the stream just to change a media source. This is an operational inference from OBS’s source workflow and YouTube’s encoder workflow, not a guarantee of gap-free switching.
Set up a rotating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC Media Player. The VLC Video source depends on VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: OBS’s documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. OBS media sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022) describes this setup; labels may differ in newer versions.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene that should show the videos, add a VLC Video source. Use its properties to add the files and arrange their order.
- Choose the order behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence, or turn it on for randomized ordering.
- Choose whether the playlist repeats. Turn on Loop Playlist to start again after the final item. Leave it off to play the list through once.
- Set what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents options to stop and restart playback when hidden and shown, pause and resume, or always play. If the playlist should keep advancing while you switch scenes, choose the behavior that keeps it playing while hidden. Verify the setting in your installed OBS version.
- Start or continue the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s encoder setup, use the stream URL and key in OBS and preview the incoming feed. To end a broadcast, YouTube instructs you to stop sending content from the encoder; changing the visible OBS source is a separate production action. Test the files in the actual OBS and VLC setup you intend to use. The cited OBS material does not establish a complete codec-compatibility matrix for every operating system, and these steps do not promise frame-accurate, interruption-free transitions.
Choose the right OBS source

Automatic playback versus manual rotation
A VLC playlist moves from one item to the next automatically. Loop Playlist repeats the queue, while Shuffle Playlist changes its order. If by “rotate” you mean choosing a specific item or playlist manually, the VLC source implementation exposes next/previous controls, but their exact availability and assignment can vary by OBS version. A physical controller is optional; it is not required for automatic rotation.

Do not confuse playlist rotation with Live Redirect
YouTube Live Redirect transfers viewers after a stream ends to a Premiere or another live stream. It does not change the video playing inside an OBS stream that is still running. YouTube states that channels sending redirects need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. See YouTube Live Redirect requirements.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC Media Player and make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops when you change scenes: Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Choose the option that continues playback while hidden if you want the sequence to keep advancing off-scene.
- The same file keeps replaying instead of the whole list: Confirm that the files were added to a VLC Video playlist. Media Source is intended for one file; its Loop setting repeats that file.
- The playlist ends and goes blank: Enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat, then verify the setting in the source properties.
- The order changes unexpectedly: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence and check the order of the files in the playlist.
- YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check that OBS is using the intended YouTube stream URL and key and that YouTube’s preview receives the encoder feed. If you are enabling livestreaming on YouTube for the first time, YouTube’s encoder guidance says activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube livestreaming setup
- Playback fails for a particular file: Test that file in the intended OBS/VLC installation. The documentation cited here does not provide a full compatibility matrix for codecs and operating systems.
Copyright and reused footage still matter
Playlist rotation changes how OBS presents files; it does not grant rights to the footage, music, or other material in them. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s rules for copyright and monetization.
