There is no established universal winner. The available evidence does not show that Windows or Linux uses less electricity for an always-on OBS YouTube stream on the same hardware. Power draw depends on the PC, drivers, encoder, settings, scene and connected devices. To find out which uses less on your machine, compare whole-system power at the wall under the same streaming workload.
What determines power use during an OBS stream?
OBS supports Windows and Linux, but compatibility alone does not mean a particular computer can handle a given stream. OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS system requirements are a starting point, not a prediction of your PC’s electricity use.
OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync as hardware-encoding options on Windows and Linux when compatible hardware and drivers are available. Hardware encoding moves encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware, but that does not establish that either operating system will use less power. Check which encoder is actually selected and active on each installation; do not assume that similarly named settings mean identical behavior.
Power management also spans more than the operating system. Microsoft describes it as coordination among Windows, device drivers, system hardware and device hardware. Linux power profiles likewise depend on the distribution, supported hardware, drivers and workload. The same PC can therefore behave differently after an OS or driver change, but those dependencies are not evidence of an automatic Windows or Linux advantage.

How to compare Windows and Linux fairly
Measure the complete computer’s input at the wall with a plug-in electricity usage monitor. CPU package or GPU-board telemetry does not include the whole system and should not be treated as whole-PC wall power. Keep the measurement method and test interval the same for both operating systems.
- Fix the physical setup. Use the same PC and BIOS settings, monitor connection, number of displays, USB devices, network connection and peripherals. Record whether the monitor is on or off in each run.
- Match the software and stream workload. Use the same OBS version, scene and sources, representative content, audio, resolution, frame rate, encoder family and settings, bitrate, and YouTube destination settings. Keep the machine awake for both runs.
- Record versions and verify encoding. Note the operating-system version and OBS, GPU and chipset driver versions. Confirm that the intended hardware encoder is selected and active on both systems.
- Measure comparable steady-state runs. Let the stream settle, then record average wall watts and energy over the same interval for each condition. Repeat runs if practical and state the test conditions and any uncertainty alongside the results.
- Check stream quality as well as watts. Record dropped frames and stability. If you test a power-saving profile, treat it as a separate condition and make sure it does not compromise the stream.
A plug-in mains power meter is the relevant kind of instrument for this comparison. A product example sometimes cited for this category is Kill A Watt, but no current model or listing has been verified here; the important point is to measure at the wall, not to rely on a particular brand.

Windows settings: turn off the display, not the stream
Windows 11 offers power-related controls including Best power efficiency, background activity controls, and screen and sleep timeouts. Microsoft documents these in its Windows 11 power and sleep settings guidance. For an always-on stream, distinguish turning off the display from putting the PC to sleep: a monitor can go dark while the computer keeps working, but sleep would interrupt streaming. There is no single default sleep timeout that is safe to recommend for every live setup.
When measuring Windows, record the selected power mode and relevant background and timeout settings. If you compare modes, test each separately and verify that the stream remains stable rather than attributing any result to Windows as a whole.

Linux power profiles: test the distribution and hardware you actually use
Linux power-management options and their effects vary by distribution, hardware support, driver behavior and workload. Avoid stacking or switching power-management tools without checking how they interact and what your distribution enables by default.
The TLP 1.10.2 documentation recommends comparative measurements on the target hardware with the specific usage pattern to determine which approach works better. That is also the right standard for an OBS stream: test your actual PC and stream rather than assuming a profile saves power from its name alone. TLP documentation

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited official and technical guidance explains OBS compatibility and power-management variables, but it does not provide a controlled, whole-PC wattage comparison for identical hardware continuously streaming YouTube on Windows and Linux. Anecdotes about laptop battery life or component power telemetry do not establish which desktop OS uses less wall power for this workload.
For a meaningful result, report the PC configuration, OS and driver versions, OBS settings, stream conditions, whether the display was on, measurement interval and wall-power readings. Any conclusion applies to that tested setup; it should not be generalized to every PC or channel.
