Hardware encoding can shift encoding work off the CPU, but that does not prove the whole computer will use less electricity. For an always-on YouTube stream, the answer depends on the complete system, its other workloads, and its settings. Measure wall power under matched conditions before expecting a lower electricity bill.
What hardware encoding changes
Hardware encoders move video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, often in a GPU. YouTube describes NVIDIA NVENC as a hardware-based encoder that can encode without using the CPU for that task. OBS likewise says hardware encoders can take work off the CPU; its examples include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync. YouTube’s encoder guide and OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance explain the distinction.
That is a statement about where the encoding work happens, not a guarantee about the electricity used by the entire computer. A discrete GPU may remain powered, and the system may still be rendering, capturing, scaling, compositing, storing, and sending video. The result depends on the machine and workload; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal wattage or percentage saving for continuous YouTube streaming.
NVIDIA’s NVENC Application Note for Video Codec SDK 13.1 says that with end-to-end encoding offloaded to NVENC, graphics/CUDA cores and CPU cores are free for other operations. This describes resource availability, not lower wall power. A computer that already has an integrated media engine also has different upgrade economics from one that would need a new discrete GPU.

Why CPU or GPU utilization cannot answer the cost question
CPU utilization measures how busy the CPU is; it is not a direct measurement of the computer’s electricity use. The same is true of GPU utilization or an encoder-activity indicator. A lower CPU percentage might accompany lower, unchanged, or higher whole-system draw, depending on the rest of the system and what it is doing.
OBS notes that resource requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity in its system requirements. That is why a comparison needs to hold the streaming workload steady, not just switch encoder labels and compare utilization readings.

How to compare power use on your own streaming PC
- Choose a whole-system measurement. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor or another suitable method that measures power at the wall. A component utilization reading alone will not show the computer’s total electricity use.
- Set up matched runs. Keep the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate or quality target, video content, OBS scene, capture and rendering work, display configuration, and background tasks as consistent as practical. Record anything you cannot keep the same.
- Measure steady operation. Start the stream, let it reach steady operation, and record the measured energy and elapsed time. Repeat the runs if readings vary. Compare energy per hour, rather than relying on a brief power reading.
- Check that both streams are comparable and stable. Use YouTube’s preview and stream-health tools, and monitor quality during each run. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and allowing bandwidth headroom; see its streaming tips.
- Translate energy into your bill. Apply your own electricity tariff to the measured energy and expected streaming hours. Do not assume a saving without those inputs.
This is a practical way to test your setup, not a published result for every PC. A study on game-streaming energy measured its own scenario and system; its figures should not be treated as measurements of your continuous YouTube stream. The study, “Towards Bridging the Energy-Performance Gap in Game Streaming”, is limited to the conditions it tested.
Keep YouTube settings consistent during a test
YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended 1080p60 ingestion bitrate is 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. These are platform recommendations, not computer-power measurements. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before testing because platform guidance can change.

If you switch both encoder and output format, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, you are no longer comparing only the encoder. Keep the target and content comparable, then verify stream health so a lower power reading is not simply the result of a degraded or unstable stream.
Should you buy a GPU or encoder to cut electricity costs?
Do not assume a hardware purchase will pay for itself through lower electricity use. First compare your existing system’s measured baseline and streaming draw. If buying hardware is part of the comparison, include the new device’s incremental idle and streaming power, its purchase cost, and the equipment you already own. No reviewed source establishes that buying a GPU or standalone encoder produces a payback through electricity savings for an always-on YouTube stream.
