Change the image in the encoder that is already sending your live program to YouTube. In OBS, prepare a replacement image or scene, then switch to it while keeping the stream output and music source running. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Studio: stopping the encoder’s output ends the transmission. [YouTube’s encoder instructions]
Change the picture in OBS while keeping the stream live
This is an encoder workflow, not a special YouTube background setting. The image is part of the picture your encoder sends; YouTube receives that feed. The instructions below describe a common OBS approach, not version-specific button names. OBS interfaces can differ by version, and YouTube’s documentation does not provide an OBS image-replacement sequence.
- Prepare the replacement visual. In OBS, add the image as a source or place it in a scene prepared for the change. Check its crop, size, and position in the preview before switching to it.
- Keep the music source active. The intended change is to the picture, not the audio. Check that the source carrying the music remains active and is not inadvertently hidden, removed, or muted as you work.
- Change the active visual. While OBS is still streaming, switch to the prepared scene or update the image source in the current scene. If the current scene contains overlays or other elements you want to retain, avoid replacing or hiding them by accident.
- Verify the result. Check OBS’s output and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the new image appears and the music continues before leaving the controls.
- Recover promptly if needed. If the image goes blank or the audio stops, restore the previous source or scene immediately. Keep the encoder transmitting while you correct the production setup.
The OBS Project provides a Sources Guide, but exact controls depend on the software version. YouTube’s help pages explain the encoder connection and stream controls, not OBS’s image-source workflow.
What to change—and what not to change—in YouTube Studio
Your stream URL and stream key connect the encoder to YouTube and allow YouTube to accept its feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. That is why the background change belongs in OBS or your active production software, not in the YouTube stream settings. [Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live Control Room settings cover stream details and related controls, including metadata, stream-key reuse or reset, and optional auto-start or auto-stop behavior. Resetting a key is a security action, not a way to change the picture. Do not reset it for this task. [Manage live stream settings]
- Keep OBS or the encoder sending the live feed throughout the change.
- Do not choose Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Studio if continuity is the goal.
- Check both the encoder output and YouTube’s preview rather than assuming the switch worked.
Which image-change approach should you use?
| Approach | Useful when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Change the image source in the current scene | You want to replace only the background quickly. | Other scene elements, such as overlays, may be affected if you hide or replace the wrong source. |
| Switch to a prepared scene | You want to preview a complete replacement setup and have a straightforward way to switch back. | Confirm the scene includes the intended overlays and that the music source remains active. |
| Edit YouTube stream settings | You need to manage stream details, keys, or related settings. | This does not change the live program picture; use the encoder for that. |
Troubleshoot a failed change without ending the broadcast
- The image is blank: Switch back to the previous scene or source, then check that the replacement image is still available to OBS and correctly positioned in the preview.
- The music stops: Restore the prior scene if necessary, then check that the music source remains active and was not hidden, removed, or muted during the visual change.
- The OBS preview changes but YouTube does not: Check the encoder’s output and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Make sure the encoder is still transmitting; do not end the stream as a first troubleshooting step.
- The new scene loses overlays or other elements: Return to the previous scene and prepare a replacement that includes the elements you need before switching again.
- You are unsure whether the stream key needs changing: It does not need changing to replace an image. YouTube describes stream keys as connection information for the encoder; reset one when needed for security, not for a visual update.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the channel to keep playing uploaded music videos without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream live from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
