To enable live streaming on a new YouTube channel, verify the channel with a phone number, turn on live streaming in YouTube Studio, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. You must also have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you plan to stream from the YouTube mobile app, there are extra subscriber and device requirements; computer streaming can use a webcam or encoder.
Enable live streaming on your channel
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer. Sign in to the YouTube account for the channel you want to stream from.
- Turn on live streaming. Select the live-streaming option in YouTube Studio and follow the on-screen setup. YouTube lists enabling live streaming as the first setup step in its computer live-streaming overview.
- Verify your channel if prompted. Enter a phone number and choose whether to receive the verification code by text message or voice call. Enter the code to complete verification. YouTube says phone verification enables live streaming; see Verify your YouTube account.
- Wait for activation. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours after you enable the feature. You may not be able to start a stream immediately.
YouTube also requires that the channel have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its live-streaming tips for computers states: “To live stream, you must have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and have a verified channel.”
Choose how to start your first stream
Once live streaming is active, choose a method that fits your equipment. You do not need to buy a webcam or other equipment just to enable the feature.
Stream from a computer
YouTube’s computer setup supports streaming with a webcam or with encoding software. The webcam route is suited to a straightforward camera-and-microphone setup. An encoder is for creators who already use streaming or production software to send a video feed to YouTube. The computer overview describes both options; it does not state a subscriber minimum for computer streams.

Stream from a phone or tablet
Mobile streaming has extra eligibility requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and a supported device. YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later in its mobile live-streaming guidance.
- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the eligible channel.
- Tap Create, then Live.
- Enter the stream details and follow the in-app prompts.
- Tap Go live when you are ready.
For mobile channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the number of viewers, and the stream archive defaults to private. These are mobile-specific conditions; do not confuse them with the computer-streaming setup.

If live streaming is still unavailable
- Verification is incomplete: Check that you finished phone verification and entered the code YouTube sent by text or voice call.
- Activation is still pending: If you only just turned on the feature, wait up to 24 hours before trying again.
- The channel has a restriction: Check whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube requires a restriction-free period.
- You are trying to stream from a mobile device: Confirm that the channel meets the 50-subscriber minimum and that the phone or tablet meets the listed operating-system requirement. A computer webcam or encoder is a separate option, and YouTube’s computer overview does not state the mobile subscriber threshold for that route.
If these checks do not explain the issue, the cited YouTube Help pages do not guarantee that a particular support or appeal route will restore access. Check current YouTube Help for account-specific guidance.
