That can help a YouTube lofi stream recover after a reboot—but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. A running OBS process can lose its connection while the task still appears successful, so you must check both OBS’s outgoing stream and YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Understand what needs to restart
Three separate states are involved:
- OBS starts: Windows launches the encoder application.
- The encoder feed starts: OBS connects to YouTube and sends video and audio.
- The YouTube broadcast goes live: YouTube makes the stream available to viewers according to the stream’s settings and event state.
Task Scheduler handles the first state. OBS command-line behavior and its stream configuration affect the second. YouTube’s Auto-start setting and, for some scheduled streams, the event controls in Live Control Room affect the third. Verify each state rather than assuming that opening OBS means the channel is live.
Prepare YouTube and OBS
Set up the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if the channel has not used it before. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Choose its visibility and review Auto-start and Auto-stop. Those settings determine whether starting or stopping the encoder also starts or ends the broadcast; reused stream settings may carry these choices forward. Confirm the settings on the stream you will use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes a stream key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a script or screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
Confirm the OBS scene and connection
Before automating startup, open OBS and confirm the intended lofi scene, media source, audio, and encoder settings. Configure the YouTube service or enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming manually. Confirm OBS reports a connection and that YouTube receives the feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to connect the encoder using the URL and key, then start streaming in the encoder; depending on stream settings, a scheduled event may also need to be started in Live Control Room. Test OBS’s start-streaming argument
An OBS forum contributor recommends adding --startstreaming to the OBS launch command so OBS attempts to start the stream when it opens. This is community advice, not a Microsoft or YouTube feature, and the forum does not establish that it works for every OBS version or profile. Test it with the exact OBS installation and profile you plan to use before creating a scheduled task. - Locate the OBS executable used by your installation. Common installations place it under
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe, but use the actual path on your PC. - Test launching that executable with
--startstreaming, using a command such as"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreamingif that is your installed path. - Check that OBS opens the intended profile and scene, attempts to connect, and sends a feed visible in Live Control Room. If it opens without starting the feed, or opens the wrong profile, do not assume Task Scheduler will fix that; revise and retest the launch command and OBS configuration.
Create the Windows Task Scheduler task
Choose the trigger according to how OBS must run. An At startup trigger runs after Windows starts. An At log on trigger waits for a user sign-in and is often the safer choice when OBS needs the interactive desktop session. Microsoft documents both trigger types and task actions in its Task Scheduler trigger documentation and schtasks create reference.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and choose Create Task.
- On General, name the task (for example,
OBS YouTube lofi stream) and select the user account and run conditions appropriate to the installation. If OBS needs an interactive desktop, use a logon trigger and run it in that user’s session. - On Triggers, choose New, then select At startup or At log on. The startup choice launches OBS after system startup; the logon choice waits for the selected user to sign in.
- On Actions, choose New and select Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path of the OBS executable. Put the validated
--startstreamingargument in Add arguments. Keep the executable path and arguments separate in these fields. - Save the task. If Windows asks for account credentials, provide the credentials required by your chosen run conditions.
- Use the task’s run command to test the action, then inspect OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. A task that reports completion or launches OBS has not, by itself, confirmed that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Microsoft also documents command-line task creation with schtasks /create, including /sc onstart for startup and /sc onlogon for logon; its examples use /tr to identify the program to run. The Task Scheduler interface is useful here because it makes the trigger, action, and retry settings visible together.

Set limited retries—and understand their limit
In the task’s Settings tab, enable the option to restart the task if it fails, then choose a finite retry count and interval. Task Scheduler needs both values to attempt a restart. Microsoft describes this as a task restart policy, not as a monitor of OBS’s YouTube connection; see Task Scheduler restart settings.
If OBS remains open but its connection to YouTube has dropped, Windows may not consider the task failed. A retry count therefore cannot detect every disconnected or frozen stream. A process/task retry and a stream-health monitor solve different problems.

Test recovery under real startup conditions
Test the path you intend to rely on instead of treating a successful manual launch as proof of automatic recovery.
- Windows reboot: Restart the PC and verify the configured trigger launches the correct OBS profile.
- OBS closure: Close OBS and run the task again; confirm that OBS opens and the encoder feed starts.
- Delayed network: Where practical, test startup when the internet connection is not ready immediately. Confirm whether OBS reconnects or needs another attempt.
- YouTube state: Check OBS’s connection status and the incoming preview or live state in YouTube Live Control Room. If Auto-start is off or the stream is a scheduled event, the broadcast may require an additional action.
If networking routinely comes up after OBS, consider a delayed trigger or a separate retry or health-check mechanism. The OBS forum discussion identifies network-device boot order as a possible outage issue, but does not establish one delay that works for every PC, router, or internet connection. Windows startup, user login, network availability, YouTube ingest, and event settings are separate dependencies.

Troubleshoot common failures
- OBS does not open: Check the executable path in Actions and confirm the task’s account and trigger. Test the task manually from Task Scheduler.
- OBS opens but does not stream: Retest the command-line argument with the installed OBS version and intended profile. Confirm the stream URL, key, and encoder configuration in OBS.
- OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube is not live: Check the stream’s Auto-start setting and any scheduled-event controls in Live Control Room. Verify that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed, not just that OBS is open.
- Startup works only after signing in: Change to an At log on trigger if the OBS configuration needs the interactive user session.
- It fails after a power outage: The PC may start before the network equipment or internet connection. Test a delayed launch or another retry mechanism; a Task Scheduler failure retry alone does not establish that OBS can recover a connection while it remains running.
- The wrong stream or scene starts: Verify which OBS profile and scene the scheduled launch opens, then retest before relying on unattended operation.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in OBS.
Copyright, archives, and 24/7 expectations
Automation does not grant rights to the lofi music or visuals in a playlist. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s rules and any applicable licenses before running it continuously. A stream staying online is not a guarantee that its content complies with copyright requirements.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not mean a 24/7 stream must be split every 12 hours, nor does it establish that restarting OBS preserves the same watch page. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
