You can keep music playing on a YouTube live stream with OBS and a computer that stays on, but changing to a different playlist every weekend requires a separate scheduling step: OBS’s documented playlist controls cover playback, looping and shuffle—not calendar-based switching. Set up the music source and YouTube broadcast first, then choose a verified automation workflow or change the playlist manually.
What you need to decide before setup
A YouTube live broadcast and the audio-video feed sent by your encoder are separate resources. YouTube’s API documentation describes broadcasts as events and streams as the feeds carrying their content; in some cases, one stream can serve more than one broadcast. That distinction matters if you want one continuous viewer experience versus separate scheduled events and watch pages. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
- Continuous broadcast: One ongoing event can suit a channel whose goal is uninterrupted listening. Plan how you will change the music playlist and monitor the feed.
- Separate scheduled broadcasts: YouTube Studio lets you schedule streams. This approach makes separate events possible, but does not by itself schedule a weekend playlist change in OBS.
- Weekend playlist trigger: Choose manual switching or a separately verified scheduler or automation layer. The OBS documentation cited here does not establish a built-in day-of-week playlist scheduler.
For either approach, plan event and archive handling rather than assuming a single broadcast will remain available indefinitely. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This statement applies to streams under 12 hours; the cited help page does not establish what will happen to every longer stream. Prepare music you are allowed to livestream
Use recordings you own or have permission to use for the intended livestream. Keep the relevant license or permission records accessible. YouTube scans live content for third-party matches, and a match can interrupt or terminate a stream. Even where you have a license, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Do not treat a playlist of purchased, downloaded or otherwise accessible music as automatically cleared for a public livestream. Resolve the rights for each recording before adding it to either the weekday or weekend set.
Build the weekday and weekend playback sources in OBS
Install VLC and add a playlist source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Open the source properties and add the media files in the order you want them played. Create the weekday playlist first; add the weekend files as a separate playlist or source so you can select them without rebuilding the weekday list.
- Choose whether that source should loop or shuffle. OBS documents the VLC Video source as supporting multi-item playlists, loop and shuffle. Its documentation describes it this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
If you only need to repeat one file, OBS’s ordinary Media Source has a Loop setting. For multiple files, use VLC Video rather than assuming a single Media Source provides playlist management.
Make the weekend change an explicit task
OBS’s documented loop and shuffle options control playback, not which playlist is active on Saturday or Sunday. If you need automatic weekend changes, verify a separate scheduler or automation workflow for your OBS setup before relying on it. Otherwise, switch the active source or playlist manually and confirm the change in the program output. Do not confuse shuffle with a weekend schedule: shuffle changes playback order, not the calendar day or playlist selection.

Create the YouTube live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Reuse stream settings or create a new event, then review the event details and visibility before scheduling.
- In the encoder settings for that event, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. The key is a credential: keep it private, do not show it in screenshots or overlays, and reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the signal and preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, then start the broadcast there when you are ready to go live.

Test the stream and monitor it after launch
Before relying on the setup for long listening sessions, preview the output and check that the audio is audible and the video is displaying as intended. Confirm that the event is accessible to the intended audience, then monitor both the stream and local media playback. YouTube recommends previewing, checking accessibility, monitoring audio and video quality, and testing encoder failover where applicable. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Check the selected source and playlist before the weekday stream begins.
- Before the weekend switch, verify the weekend source is active and the intended files are in its playlist.
- Watch the YouTube preview after any change, rather than assuming the correct source is reaching the broadcast.
- Plan who will respond if the encoder, computer, connection or local playback stops. Do not assume a loop setting will restart a failed stream.
Common problems and fixes
The VLC Video source is missing
OBS requires VLC for this source. Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source list again.

The weekend playlist does not switch on its own
Loop and shuffle are playback options, not a documented day-of-week scheduler. Switch playlists manually or use a scheduler or automation workflow you have independently verified with your OBS setup.
YouTube shows no incoming signal
Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube event, then confirm that OBS has started sending. If the key may be compromised, reset it in YouTube and update OBS with the replacement.

Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and resolve the rights issue. If the music is licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption.

The live output has no sound or the wrong playlist
Check the active OBS scene and source, confirm the intended files are listed, and inspect the YouTube preview after correcting the source. Monitor the local playback as well as the live output.
