Check the source or device, operating-system and application levels, then the OBS fader. Listen at the source and in OBS, and make a test recording that includes the loudest crackles. A compressor can reduce peaks; put a limiter last as a safety ceiling. Neither can repair audio that was already clipped upstream.
Find the source of the clipping first
Clipping is distortion that occurs when a signal cannot be accurately reproduced by the gear it passes through. Start with the OBS mixer channel carrying the fireplace audio—not unrelated channels—and identify how that sound reaches OBS. It may be a live microphone or other device, a media source, desktop or application audio, or hardware routing. The right control depends on the source; there is no single gain setting for every fireplace setup.
OBS recommends tracing levels from the device onward and listening both at the device and in OBS. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
Listen at successive points in the chain
- Play representative fireplace audio and listen at the source or device monitor, if available.
- Listen to the signal OBS receives using Audio Monitoring, and watch the meter and its peak indicator.
- If distortion is already audible in the source file or at the device, inspect the recording or hardware path and lower the relevant playback or input level.
- If the sound is clean up to one point but distorted after it, adjust that stage and check again downstream.
A later fader or limiter cannot make a source recording clean if the recording itself is clipped. Likewise, lowering OBS output does not undo distortion introduced earlier in the chain.

Lower gain in stages
Make small changes, then listen and check the next point in the signal path. OBS notes that devices behave differently; some may require vendor software or the device manual. Its guidance is to begin at the device, check physical gain where applicable, then operating-system and application controls, and finally adjust the OBS fader if needed.
For a live input or hardware-routed signal
- Check the microphone, interface, mixer, or other device’s physical gain control, if it has one.
- Check the operating-system input level and any relevant vendor control software.
- Check any hardware mixer or routing stage between the input and OBS.
- Once upstream levels are reasonable, use the OBS fader to balance the channel if needed.
For a media source or computer playback
- Listen to the media file or playback application directly. If it is already distorted there, OBS cannot restore clean audio; use a clean source or correct the file or playback path.
- Check the media-source or application level and the operating-system playback level before changing the OBS fader.
- Recheck the audio OBS receives after each adjustment.
Keep peaks below the digital ceiling and judge the result by monitoring and recording rather than aiming at a universal fireplace level. OBS’s technical guide identifies 0 dBFS as the digital maximum and describes -9 dBFS as its permitted-maximum reference in the meter discussion. Use OBS filters only for the problem they solve
Filters can control dynamic peaks, but they are not substitutes for finding the overloaded stage. In OBS, open the mixer channel’s filter controls and add or adjust a filter only after checking the unprocessed signal. OBS’s Filters Guide lists the available audio filter types.
Compressor: reduce louder portions
A compressor reduces levels above its threshold and is typically placed near the beginning of the filter chain. OBS documents these default values: 10:1 ratio, -18 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, 60 ms release, and 0 dB output gain. They are defaults, not recommended fireplace settings. Adjust while listening and watching gain reduction; excessive compression can change the natural rise and fall of the fire sound. Details: OBS Compressor Filter.

Limiter: catch peaks at the end
Use a limiter as the final filter in the chain to prevent its output from exceeding the selected threshold. OBS documents a default threshold of -6 dB and release of 60 ms; treat these as defaults, not guaranteed settings. Choose a ceiling appropriate to the actual stream and listen for unwanted changes. A limiter cannot repair distortion that occurred before it. Details: OBS Limiter Filter.
Gain, noise suppression, and gates
- Gain: OBS provides a Gain filter, but adding gain can worsen clipping. Use it only after diagnosing and setting levels through the chain.
- Noise suppression and noise gate: These are not clipping fixes. They can damage or cut off quiet ambient fire sounds, so avoid microphone-oriented noise processing unless there is a clear need and careful listening confirms it helps.
Verify the stream before leaving it running
- Record a representative segment in OBS that includes quiet ambience and the loudest crackles or transitions.
- Listen to the recording, not just the live monitor. Check that the audio remains clean at the loudest moments and that both channels behave as expected if the source is stereo.
- Confirm Audio Monitoring is not routed back into the stream in a way that creates a feedback loop.
- Observe the source for enough time to catch its natural peaks before treating the setup as verified. For a continuous stream, periodic checks or alerts may help operationally, but there is no established universal check interval or unattended-stream audio target.
OBS recommends monitoring and recording a normal session to listen back. A short glance at the meter may miss a brief crackle or transition.

Troubleshooting by symptom

OBS’s mixer guidance notes that device behavior varies, so consult the device manual or vendor controls if the distortion begins in hardware.
