For a free local setup, use OBS Studio to encode and send your finished audiovisual stream to YouTube Live. If you also need automated music rotation, AzuraCast AutoDJ can compose a continuous radio broadcast from playlist-assigned media—but the documentation reviewed here does not establish that AzuraCast alone creates and sends an audiovisual YouTube Live stream. Treat playlist automation and YouTube encoding as separate jobs unless you have confirmed the complete output path.
For a channel that needs to stay live without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. You still need permission to stream every track.
Which free playlist automation tools fit a 24/7 YouTube music channel?
These options do different jobs. OBS is an encoder for sending a stream to YouTube; AzuraCast AutoDJ handles radio playlist rotation. Mixxx and BUTT are broadcast clients for radio-server workflows, not documented here as complete automated YouTube video-stream solutions. YouTube also lists cloud tools for continuous streams, though the available information does not establish their current pricing or specific operating behavior.
| Option | What it can do | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube, keeping a channel live without a home computer. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the first day is free. | It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. It is a YouTube service, not a general radio AutoDJ. |
| OBS Studio | YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software available at no charge. It can encode and send a finished stream to YouTube. | The cited YouTube encoder information does not establish unattended playlist scheduling or automatic recovery for OBS. Plan for those requirements separately. |
| AzuraCast AutoDJ | AzuraCast documents automatic 24/7 radio playback from media assigned to playlists, including standard rotation and scheduled playlists. | It is self-hosted and assumes basic Linux shell knowledge. The cited documentation does not confirm audiovisual YouTube Live output; confirm how it will feed a YouTube encoder before relying on it. |
| Mixxx | AzuraCast describes Mixxx as free, open-source DJ software that can broadcast to Icecast and Shoutcast. | The cited information concerns live broadcasting to radio servers, not automated 24/7 YouTube audiovisual output. |
| BUTT | AzuraCast describes BUTT as a free, cross-platform broadcast client and recommends Icecast mode for DJ connections. | It is not described in the cited material as a playlist AutoDJ or YouTube video encoder. |
| Other cloud continuous-stream tools | YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud-based continuous-stream options, including Gyre for prerecorded video. | Current prices, free allowances, playlist and audio behavior, and restart policies are not established here. Check each provider’s current documentation. |
For a complete setup, identify both the playlist system and the component that actually sends an audiovisual stream to YouTube. Before choosing any tool, check whether it rotates tracks or only encodes a feed, whether it can run unattended and recover after a connection loss, where it runs, which formats it accepts, how it connects to YouTube, and what continuous use costs after any free allowance.

Set up a free local workflow with OBS
This route suits creators willing to keep a computer and internet connection available for the broadcast. Prepare a finished audiovisual feed—for example, audio with a permitted visual—and use OBS as the encoder that sends it to YouTube Live. OBS’s no-charge status does not by itself provide automated rotation, unattended operation, or recovery behavior.
- Enable YouTube live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Obtain the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup and use them to connect OBS. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Prepare the audiovisual feed. Add the audio and visuals you have rights to use. If you need automatic radio rotation, configure that separately; OBS should not be assumed to provide the AutoDJ behavior described for AzuraCast.
- Start the encoder and verify the YouTube preview. Confirm that both picture and sound arrive before making the broadcast public. Keep the local computer and its network connection available for as long as this workflow depends on them.
- Plan for long-running playback and archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not promise one complete replay for a 24/7 broadcast, so arrange a separate archive strategy if retaining the full program matters.
Use AzuraCast when automated radio rotation matters
AzuraCast is the documented candidate here for playlist-driven radio automation. Its AutoDJ composes a live radio broadcast from media assigned to playlists, and its feature list describes standard rotation and scheduled playlists. It is a self-hosted system, not a confirmed one-step YouTube audiovisual pipeline.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
- Prepare a Linux host and administration skills. AzuraCast’s documentation assumes basic Linux shell knowledge. Account for server setup and ongoing maintenance rather than treating it as a hosted service.
- Install and maintain AzuraCast. The project documentation describes it as beta, recommends keeping the server up to date, and advises keeping a second copy of station media because updates may cause unexpected issues or data loss.
- Upload media and assign it to at least one playlist. AzuraCast says AutoDJ will not play media automatically unless it belongs to a playlist. Configure rotation or schedules to match the station’s intended format.
- Confirm the YouTube output chain. The cited AzuraCast documentation does not establish an audiovisual YouTube Live output. Identify and verify the component that turns the radio output into a YouTube-compatible audiovisual stream before announcing a 24/7 YouTube channel.
Mixxx and BUTT may be relevant in a radio-server chain: the cited description says Mixxx can broadcast to Icecast and Shoutcast, while BUTT is a broadcast client with an Icecast mode. That does not establish either as a playlist AutoDJ or YouTube video encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the #1 fit when the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.

Clear music rights before going live
Rights are a prerequisite, not a setting to solve after launch. YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions say creators represent and warrant that they have all necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers—including public performance licenses—and other royalty participants.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If matched material remains after a warning, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. For music licensed from a third party, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Buying or downloading a track does not, by itself, establish permission for YouTube live use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monetization and long-stream expectations
YouTube says live-stream revenue can include ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships; it also says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. These possibilities do not establish that a particular channel is eligible, that a track’s license permits monetization, or that a streaming provider permits it. Confirm channel eligibility and the rights for each track before relying on revenue.

For archives, YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast is longer, so do not assume YouTube will create a single full-length replay. Decide in advance whether to record locally, split programming into shorter broadcasts, or use another archive approach.
Quick Recap
Common setup problems and what to check
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: recheck the stream URL and stream key in YouTube Studio and in the encoder. If live streaming was only just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- AzuraCast has media but AutoDJ is silent: verify that each item is assigned to at least one playlist; assignment is required for automatic playback.
- Music triggers a warning or interruption: stop and resolve the rights issue. For properly licensed third-party music, ask the rights holder about adding the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- The complete 24/7 program is missing from the archive: the stated automatic archive behavior is for streams under 12 hours; use a separate archive plan for a continuous broadcast.
- A self-hosted station encounters trouble after an update: AzuraCast recommends current updates and a second copy of station media because unexpected issues or data loss may occur.
- A tool appears to automate radio but not YouTube video: treat this as an output-chain gap, not a minor setting. Verify the audiovisual route to YouTube before depending on it for a public channel.
