Start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, using a compatible hardware H.264 encoder if the PC has one; otherwise test x264 at the veryfast preset. For x264, OBS gives 3000–5000 kbps as a 720p30 starting range for low-to-medium-motion video, not a universal platform requirement. Nature footage can contain more motion and detail than a still scene, so test your own rain, water, foliage, or cloud footage before settling on a bitrate.

These are starting settings, not a guarantee that an old PC can stream continuously. OBS says there is no universal best preset and recommends testing a configuration on the actual system. OBS’s x264 guide and system requirements both make clear that compatibility alone does not prove a computer can stream reliably.

Recommended starting settings

Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a first pass, then check and adjust the settings below. The streaming service’s current ingest requirements and your stable upload capacity determine whether a particular bitrate is appropriate.

OBS control Starting setting Why and what to check
Output resolution 1280Ă—720 A resource-conscious baseline for an older PC. Raise it only if the machine can encode the scene smoothly and the service supports the resulting stream.
Frame rate 30 fps A reasonable first test for mostly ambient footage. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps.
Encoder Compatible hardware H.264 if available; otherwise x264 Hardware encoding offloads work from the CPU, but an older encoder may produce a less pleasing image at the same bitrate. Compare actual output rather than choosing by name alone.
x264 preset veryfast OBS’s x264 bitrate examples assume veryfast. If encoding overload persists after reducing resolution or frame rate, try a faster preset such as superfast; faster presets reduce CPU load at the cost of compression efficiency.
Rate control and video bitrate CBR if required by the streaming service; for x264 720p30, test within OBS’s 3000–5000 kbps reference range The OBS range is a low-to-medium-motion reference, not a service limit. Check the service’s current requirements and leave adequate upload headroom.
Audio bitrate Around 160 kbps OBS gives this as a general streaming starting point; lower it if upload capacity is limited. The cited guidance does not specify a nature-sounds-specific audio bitrate.

For exact encoder and rate-control labels, select the relevant encoder in OBS under Settings → Output and use the streaming service’s current ingest instructions. OBS labels and available options can vary with its version, operating system, drivers, and hardware; OBS’s documentation does not establish one universal menu layout for every build.

Choose between x264 and hardware encoding

Try hardware H.264 when the PC supports it

OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it shifts real-time encoding work away from the CPU. Its documentation lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync (QSV), but availability depends on the exact processor or GPU generation, drivers, operating system, and OBS build. Do not infer compatibility from a brand name alone.

OBS’s hardware-encoder guidance, published in 2022, lists GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series and newer for NVENC support, and Intel Core-i 2xxx-era integrated graphics for QSV compatibility; it recommends newer QSV generations because earlier ones had lower quality. These are compatibility statements, not a recommendation to buy or upgrade to a particular component. Check your specific machine and test it.

Use x264 if hardware encoding is unavailable or unsuitable

x264 runs on the CPU. OBS’s general guidance describes x264 as capable of stronger image quality per bitrate, while hardware encoding can substantially reduce CPU load. On an old computer, spare processing capacity may matter more than compression efficiency. Compare x264 and hardware output at the same scene and bitrate, and watch both image quality and system stability.

Test the picture and the machine before going live

  1. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its recommendation as a starting point: OBS says the wizard evaluates system and connection capability, but no wizard result guarantees continuous operation.
  2. Use the actual scene and audio. Test the nature footage you intend to loop. A quiet static image may be easy to encode while moving leaves, water, rain, or clouds reveal more detail and motion.
  3. Make a private, unlisted, or otherwise safe test. Check that the stream reaches the intended service, the video and audio are acceptable, and the media source loops as intended.
  4. Inspect OBS status and logs during the test. Look for encoding overload and dropped frames; identify whether the problem is encoding capacity or network stability before changing settings.
  5. Test for longer than a brief preview. A short successful stream is not evidence of 24/7 reliability. Confirm power and cooling behavior independently, and test recovery after a controlled network interruption before relying on the setup unattended.

OBS recommends testing before streaming, but its guidance does not certify a PC for 24/7 use or define a test duration that proves reliability.

Fix encoding overload or dropped frames

  • Encoding overload: Reduce output resolution or frame rate first. OBS specifically recommends lowering resolution and FPS for x264 overload; if needed after that, use a faster preset such as superfast. Do not expect a higher bitrate to fix an encoder that cannot keep up.
  • Dropped frames or unstable delivery: Check network stability and the streaming service’s bitrate limits. OBS says bitrate depends on upload speed and service constraints. Raising bitrate blindly can exceed either and will not repair encoding overload.
  • Excessive scene load: Simplify the scene where practical. Use one media source or loop if that meets the need, and remove unnecessary animated overlays or heavy filters. These are practical setup steps, not measured performance guarantees.
  • Hardware encoder looks worse than x264: Compare both encoders on the same footage and bitrate. Older hardware generations can trade image quality for lower CPU use; choose based on the result your PC can sustain.
  • Considering NVENC Ultra High Quality: OBS 31.0 documents this tuning option as optimized for live-action artifacts such as camera sensor noise, while warning that it significantly reduces throughput. It is not a default choice for an old PC; test throughput and stability before considering it.

What changes when the stream must run 24/7

There is no separate encoder preset that guarantees an always-on stream. In addition to a stable picture, an unattended setup needs dependable power, cooling, internet, and a recovery plan. OBS’s overview mentions an Automatic Reconnect control in Advanced settings, but reconnect behavior is not a substitute for testing the whole stream path and verifying that the stream resumes as intended.

For background ambience, also check that the video and sound loop cleanly, that the audio is not unintentionally interrupted at the loop point, and that the content is yours or properly licensed. A continuous broadcast does not change the need to comply with the streaming service’s current copyright rules. The OBS guidance cited here does not establish YouTube eligibility, reused-content, or monetization outcomes; check YouTube’s current policies for those questions.
