Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst identify which OBS counter is rising: dropped frames usually point to the network connection, encoding lag to the encoder’s workload, and rendering lag to GPU pressure. They need different fixes. If x264 is overloaded, test a lower output resolution, then 30 fps if you are streaming at 60, then a faster x264 preset. If OBS shows dropped frames, investigate upload stability and bitrate instead of changing the CPU preset.
Diagnose the OBS symptom before changing settings
Open OBS’s Stats window while running a representative test. Note which counter increases: dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag. A stream can also show more than one problem, so treat each counter as its own clue rather than assuming all stutter has the same cause.
Dropped frames: check the connection
OBS uses “dropped frames” for frames discarded because the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. This does not, by itself, diagnose an overloaded CPU encoder. Try a different ingest server and lower the bitrate to a level your stable upload can sustain, within YouTube’s limits. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Check for VPN or network-prioritization software and prefer a wired connection where possible. Dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the cause and can reduce picture quality. OBS connection troubleshooting
Encoding lag or “encoding overloaded”: check the encoder workload
If encoding lag rises, the selected resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset may be asking the system to encode more than it can process in real time. On an older Intel computer using x264, work through the changes below, testing after each one. OBS’s x264 guide

Rendering lag: check GPU pressure
Rendering lag points toward the GPU’s work compositing the scene, not necessarily the CPU encoder. An uncapped game can leave OBS too little GPU time. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, lower its graphics settings, and simplify resource-heavy scenes or sources. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
Test x264 settings in this order
Change one setting at a time and test with the sort of gameplay or moving footage you actually stream. A configuration that works on one older Intel system is not guaranteed to work on another.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Lower the output resolution. This reduces the amount of video the encoder must process. Choose a resolution that remains clear enough for your documentary footage or gameplay.
- Lower the frame rate. If you are trying to stream at 60 fps, test 30 fps. OBS notes that fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work; it specifically suggests 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- Choose a faster x264 CPU preset if encoding lag remains. Presets such as
ultrafast, superfast, andveryfastuse less CPU than slower presets. Faster presets trade compression efficiency for lower CPU use, so picture quality can be lower at the same bitrate. Judge the result at your actual bitrate and with representative motion.
Do not start by lowering the base canvas as a universal fix. OBS says that can complicate source layout and suggests it only when GPU resources are severely constrained. If rendering lag is the problem, address GPU load as well.
Check whether Intel Quick Sync is available
Quick Sync Video (QSV) can move encoding work from the CPU to Intel’s video hardware, if the computer, graphics driver, operating system, and OBS expose a compatible encoder. In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the available encoder choices. If a Quick Sync option appears, compare it with a lower-workload x264 configuration in a representative test.

OBS lists Windows and Linux support with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i CPU 2xxx/Sandy Bridge or newer, and recommends Core-i 4xxx/Haswell or newer because early QSV generations had lower quality. This is compatibility guidance, not a promise that QSV will appear or work well on a particular machine. OBS also notes that earlier-generation hardware encoding can have lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. OBS hardware encoding guide
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Encoding lag | Does the counter stop rising in a representative scene? |
| Picture quality | At the same YouTube bitrate and resolution, which encoder preserves detail and motion better? |
| QSV availability | Does OBS actually offer Quick Sync on this system with its installed graphics driver? |
| Rendering stability | Does the GPU still render the game and OBS scene without rendering lag? |
OBS documents the CPU-offload benefit and the image-quality caveat for older QSV generations; it does not establish one encoder as best for every computer.

Keep the YouTube ingest settings within its guidance
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; keyframes must not exceed 4 seconds. The service supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the codec-specific bitrate table on YouTube’s current settings page rather than assuming one bitrate fits every codec and resolution. YouTube live encoder settings
For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | not stated here; consult YouTube’s current H.264 table | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular upload connection can sustain them. A lower resolution and bitrate that remain stable are preferable to settings your network cannot reliably carry. YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health.

A practical test and troubleshooting sequence
- Run a representative test with your usual audio, scene, and movement. Record which OBS Stats counter rises.
- If encoding lag rises, lower output resolution, test 30 fps if you currently use 60, then try a faster x264 preset. Test QSV only if OBS offers it.
- If rendering lag rises, cap game FPS or enable V-Sync, reduce game graphics settings, and simplify resource-heavy scenes or sources.
- If dropped frames rise, try another ingest server, reduce bitrate to match stable upload capacity, check VPN or network-prioritization software, and use wired networking where possible.
- Check YouTube stream health and keep the settings that remain stable during a representative test.
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | First practical checks |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames increasing | Connection to ingest server or bitrate beyond stable upload capacity | Different server, lower sustainable bitrate, wired connection, network software |
| Encoding lag increasing | Encoder workload | Lower output resolution, lower frame rate, faster x264 preset, or test available QSV |
| Rendering lag increasing | GPU workload | Cap game FPS or enable V-Sync, lower game graphics, simplify scenes |
If multiple counters rise, make one relevant change at a time and retest. For instance, a faster x264 preset will not repair unstable upload, while lowering bitrate alone does not necessarily resolve encoding overload.
